having a notification center + imessage on my mac just makes me thing im going to get about a million redundant alerts on both my phone and computer

I don't really need to merge IM services, but getting iMessages on the desktop could be useful. I skipped Snow Leopard anyway...

I probably won't update; I really don't want my computer acting more and more like my phone.

More immediately interested in the run-up to Ivy Bridge chips from Intel later in the year as well as the wider use of Thunderbolt -- I'm pretty well due to get a new Mac this fall. (Still going desktop as well; if I ever do get a laptop it'll just be an iPad -- and I am thinking about the iPad 3...)

idk why people are all up in arms about Lion upgrading. I find it to be a pretty great thing

trying out the imessage beta, feels really confusing

paranoid that im missing messages, dont get it at all

hoping for a new iMac redesign to push me into replacing my current one

super confusing, the caller ID is a fucking mess, some outgoing messages randomly don't sync to other devices, high risk of coming back to your mac hours later to see what the other person thought was a text you would get on your phone. whole thing is a total shitshow

I sent a message to my iPad from my mbp & it was received about 10 seconds later; fwiw I don't usually get texts on my iPad so I can't say if I'm missing messages or not

id be a lot less paranoid if imessage wasnt also effectively an SMS replacement for me. i dont mind missing IMs but i need texts!

Yeah, but then if you had iMessage still active on the Mac and turned off on your iPhone, when people using it on their iPhones tried to text you, their text would go to the Mac and you'd never know about it

isn't the whole point of icloud etc. that everything gets pushed everywhere? like incoming iMessages should push to both your phone and mac?

it's because of how the "Caller ID" for iMessage works on iPhones vs. all other devices.

The way to make everything work properly is to set your iMessage caller ID on all devices including your iPhone to the same email address.

this seems like a fairly simple thing that they really shouldnt roll out w/o figuring out:

if you have an account open on 1-3 devices at once, do they all get the messages all the time? annoying!
but if they DON'T, and imessage mis-guesses which device you're using, you risk losing messages - worse than annoying!

it's a tough one.

They should all get them, and when you read a message it should be marked as read on every device. Sounds really really simple to me, unless I'm missing something.

but actually, if i was messaging someone on my computer, and my phone was in my pocket, or on my desk, and it buzzed every time i got a message, i would not be happy about that situation

iMessages are just like texts though, aren't they? So wouldn't the fact of 'Messages' being on Macs be the problem, rather than how the actual messages are rolled out?

What I mean is that 'buzzing every time you get a message' is what messages have done since dinosaurs, therefore idg your beef with the buzzing every time thing.

because apple just rolled out this thing that allows you to 'imessage' (which effectively replaces texting 80% of the time on your phone) for the desktop.

they've rolled into ichat, so it overlaps with IMing now. so if you are having a sesh with a friend on your desktop, every time your friend replies, your phone will also buzz.
