what do you press if you just want someone banned for who they are tho

teaky frigger (darraghmac), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 00:56 (twelve years ago) link

i feel like this is going to change by reading habits, like rather than breezing through threads casually sb'ing every other poster at whim i'm going to start scouring threads for actual reprehensible posts

Not to ruin the festivities and all but I do want to make it clear that this is a well thought out semantic change, but doesn't change anything about the actual functionality that used to be called suggest ban.

Man I should really not post from my iPhone when I'm trying to be clear.

It gives me a headache that you have to even point this out, tbh. Its like everyone's caught the dumb.

no, please keep on going to MRF with that sort of stuff -- janitorial stuff, if you will

Rotary Boy of the Month (WmC), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 01:59 (twelve years ago) link

just realized this wasnt a joke thread and noticed the change in links--this is a good thing imo, thanks stet/mods

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 02:12 (twelve years ago) link

so OK, you can flag multiple posts by the same poster (assuming those posts are being flagged for different reasons or on different occasions/threads), and each time that action will be paid some attention by mods, but otherwise the rules remain the same about 51-unique-posters being the 'total'?

lana del rey: everythang's workin' (some dude), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 02:13 (twelve years ago) link

well that prob was the case w/ sb too

iatee, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 02:15 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i guess i never really was clear on that, whether each SB was actually looked at or just could be looked at it if a mod felt like it, and if a 2nd SB from one poster to another even registered

lana del rey: everythang's workin' (some dude), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 02:19 (twelve years ago) link

can we make it so nobody gets banned?

just want to toss that idea out there

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 02:20 (twelve years ago) link

it would make ilx a lot cooler, think abt it

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 02:20 (twelve years ago) link

it would definitely lead to a gift of gabb

I know this is a tired old saw from me, and will likely be quoted on a lol thread etc., etc., but: I genuinely believe that if somebody is endangering the, um, spirit of community, sense of trust, or safety or privacy of ILX at large it is in the best interest of the board that there be a mechanism to (at least temporarily) separate them from the system

gnome (remy bean), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 02:27 (twelve years ago) link

tbh the spirit of the community is kind of mean and funny, most of the time

No, this isn't how it works and it wasn't how it worked before today. If you SB'd someone yesterday and FP'd the same poster (different post) tonight, that FP doesn't show up to mods. I think it would be good if it did, though -- stet, could a separate report be rigged up for that?

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 02:34 (twelve years ago) link

yeah some dude raises a good point (xp thanks wmc) - if ppl can flag multiple posts by the same user that kind of messes with the numbers

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 02:36 (twelve years ago) link

The thing is, the number of sb-banned posters < the number of genuinely disruptive posters.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 02:37 (twelve years ago) link

given that ilx is a pretty self-selecting group, bans obviously aren't necessary, we can debate whether some of the old-school ones were but i don't think anyone here can seriously say they felt unsafe or whatever when whiney or frogbs or burt_stanton was posting - imo the old school way is the best: if someone is causing problems start a (serious) "ban ___" thread, let the issues be hashed out and the offender be given a chance to defend himself, mod oligarchy makes an informed ruling

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 02:39 (twelve years ago) link

kind of doubt that? who was the last actual disruptive poster? newgod? frogbs, to use the most recent example, is actually a very civil person who just says a lot of dumb shit

OK -- so there's basically no way to flag a post if you already flagged an unrelated post by that person like two months earlier and probably already forgot about it? just trying to be clear on the utility of this thing.

lana del rey: everythang's workin' (some dude), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 02:43 (twelve years ago) link

there is literally no realistic scenario in which "disruptive" posts and/or posters disappear from ilx and the board is in any way better. there is no ideal peaceful environment anyone is hoping to attain.

lana del rey: everythang's workin' (some dude), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 02:44 (twelve years ago) link

if by disruptive we mean "fucking shit" then

― lana del rey: everythang's workin' (some dude),

Yeah, that's where we're at. Now with the semantic change from "alerting mods to this poster" to "alerting mods to this post," I do hope it'll be possible for stet to create a report page that will reflect that shift.

Rotary Boy of the Month (WmC), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 02:49 (twelve years ago) link

Hmm, I guess I should have used the inequality sign rather than the greater than sign; it wouldn't have been as accurate, but it wouldn't have been as easy to misunderstand.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 02:50 (twelve years ago) link

oh and I figured out that I hate the jump-back-to-top thing because I reflexively click "bookmark" before I comment, so I click "bookmark" and then it jumps and then I have to hit "end" or whatever to comment.

Also I think generally it's a bit of bad browser citizenship/violates expectations. The link says "bookmark" not "bookmark and jump to the top".
