Hmm, I guess I should have used the inequality sign rather than the greater than sign; it wouldn't have been as accurate, but it wouldn't have been as easy to misunderstand.

oh and I figured out that I hate the jump-back-to-top thing because I reflexively click "bookmark" before I comment, so I click "bookmark" and then it jumps and then I have to hit "end" or whatever to comment.

Also I think generally it's a bit of bad browser citizenship/violates expectations. The link says "bookmark" not "bookmark and jump to the top".

Yeah I like the old bookmarks.

so this is interesting; never ever used SB but i think i'll actually use flagging.

TBF i actually did EVER use SB but quit as soon as i started steady moddin

Wie wol ich bin der vogel has noch den erfret mich das (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 03:56 (twelve years ago) link

But it's the same thing so why would you change how you use it? Idgi

so long! (jjjusten), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 03:58 (twelve years ago) link

because it invites moderator intervention and isn't a referendum on the poster so much as an individual post
this feels radically christian! blame the sin not the sinner etc

Wie wol ich bin der vogel has noch den erfret mich das (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:02 (twelve years ago) link

But, is it the point to eliminate the post or, with cause, to eliminate the poster of the post? I'm not sure there is any simple way to eliminate the post, so the poster will still be the eventual repository of the sin and receiver of the punishment.

Aimless, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:06 (twelve years ago) link

the poster may be improved, the post may not

Where do you get that from exactly

so long! (jjjusten), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:21 (twelve years ago) link

Remy talked about it upthread. I've gone on record before saying I never felt comfortable judging an SB and finding it delete-worthy.

Rotary Boy of the Month (WmC), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:27 (twelve years ago) link

Don't pay that no never mind, sir.

Such people will never understand what is involved in moderating a forum like ilx. They want to know the exact wording of every rule, and then want to dispute every shred of judgement a mod exercises. Basically, they just want to do what they want to do and complain about anything that might possibly prevent them.

Aimless, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:33 (twelve years ago) link

Side note: do we record who did the flagging/suggesting? remy's judgment on validity makes it seem that may be the case, but he may be judging based on the post flagged.

mh, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:33 (twelve years ago) link

Btw I think the system should not show the flagger to mods

mh, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:34 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, the flagger/SB'er is ID'd. I don't mean to throw Remy under the bus or anything. Every mod has a different approach, to the site's benefit imo, and I'm not saying mine is better than his.

Rotary Boy of the Month (WmC), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 04:42 (twelve years ago) link

It's cool, just banned Remy.

can we make it so nobody gets banned?

no; this is a terrible idea, banning is good and important & when people can't stop being uncool to people they need a fucking "you sit out for a minute" break

a month seems right about right for somebody to go "shit, there was stuff about being on that board that I enjoyed aside from going out of my way to be a dick to people, maybe when I go back I can quit being a fucking nine-year-old"

unlistenable in philly (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:13 (twelve years ago) link

disagree.

strongly agree -- some people have poor impulse control. they need to be shown they don't have a blank check for every impulse.

Aimless, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:16 (twelve years ago) link

I could really be talked down to 2 weeks gr80 probably it's not like I don't see the sense it the anti-SB crowd's point, although the "never ban anyone" point seems to me like a "fuck weak people! fuck anybody who can't take really relentless constant abuse from crowds of ppl who're great at bullying online!" stance which like...there's the rest of the internet for that garbage, "enjoy"

unlistenable in philly (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:17 (twelve years ago) link

just for clarity's sake, 'suggest ban' is now 'flag post'? literally nothing else has changed?

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:19 (twelve years ago) link

no it's totally different k3v - you love flag post and do not hate it like you hated SB, it's a whole new world so dig it

unlistenable in philly (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:19 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i mean 2 weeks seems much more fair man i've said that multiple times. that would definitely be a start. also & maybe this is just me but it'd be rad if like when a poster is accumulating SBs a mod starts a thread and is like "hey man what's your deal?" and the person can defend himself and decisions can be made from there, it'd feel more open, idk

bully the bullies.

i like it.

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:25 (twelve years ago) link

no gr80 - it's "respond to what bullies do by taking away their ability to do it." this is not actually hard to grasp, unless you're really obstinate & into berzerker models of community.

I guess where I get really pro-SB is like the people who get repeatedly SB'd are old enough to know better. At their age, they should not need somebody to say "yo, man, check it out, you're really bugging a lot of people & carrying out battles & vendettas long after there's any conceivable value, even entertainment value, in doing so." these are dudes in their thirties. they're not wild kids who just need people to understand their energy levels. they're grownups who think if they can find somebody to be uncool to, that'll be great for them, for whatever reason. I say fuck that; flag post on any motherfucker who can't be, bare minimum, respectful to the people he's arguing with. it's not even that hard. I have permanent beef with deej but he knows I respect him and even when I'm needling him I try to stay aware that he's a person and it's gotta suck to have somebody in your community who pretty much always thinks you're dead wrong. this sort of shit has gotta be worse when it's not just asshole old dude aero but several guys in their thirties who think they're teenagers pokin' & pokin' & pokin'. recourse must be made available against that shit imo.

on a side note it's always weird to me gr80 that you're so anti-ban, you're a chill dude who doesn't ride people & I don't get why you think people need the absolute right to be total dicks to others within a community.

I think anyone who made it to 40 is the kind of person who would just love and wallow in this sort of attention.

when a poster is accumulating SBs a mod starts a thread and is like "hey man what's your deal?" and the person can defend himself

Mods have enough to do without arguing over whether or not you really deserve a temp ban because you can board lawyer really well. If ilx means that much to you, just learn to be civil enough you aren't upsetting large numbers of people. It isn't rocket science.

Aimless, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:38 (twelve years ago) link

basically i like fun, so that's how it fits with my chill dude vibe. its really fun watching frogbs be so dumb and wrong all the time. its really fun watching whiney find new and adventurous ways to be a dick. l0u1s jagg3r was like the funnest dude ever to watch post-- why would you want to stop a dude from doing that like nine times?? i am 100% aware that i am in the minority on this.

k3v, i was agreeing w/ u-- i just framed it as "bullying the bullies"

i think that's kind of judgmental! but i don't see the harm in it either way, i don't think it's like a big burden or anything for the mods, lol

on the real though i would feel 10000x less sympathetic for someone banned for 30 days if that person was told face to face by ppl on the board like this to quit it and kept doing it anyway

lol yeah we're into some heavy "agree to disagree" territory here. I consider whiney a friend but every time he gets banned I'm like "yeah, whiney needs his quarterly ban or he'll just intentionally make as many people feel bad as possible all day"
