haha wouldn't that just be like, a party for their upcoming ban

iatee, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:37 (twelve years ago) link

also & maybe this is just me but it'd be rad if like when a poster is accumulating SBs a mod starts a thread and is like "hey man what's your deal?" and the person can defend himself and decisions can be made from there, it'd feel more open, idk

I think anyone who made it to 40 is the kind of person who would just love and wallow in this sort of attention.

Mods have enough to do without arguing over whether or not you really deserve a temp ban because you can board lawyer really well. If ilx means that much to you, just learn to be civil enough you aren't upsetting large numbers of people. It isn't rocket science.

Aimless, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:38 (twelve years ago) link

basically i like fun, so that's how it fits with my chill dude vibe. its really fun watching frogbs be so dumb and wrong all the time. its really fun watching whiney find new and adventurous ways to be a dick. l0u1s jagg3r was like the funnest dude ever to watch post-- why would you want to stop a dude from doing that like nine times?? i am 100% aware that i am in the minority on this.

k3v, i was agreeing w/ u-- i just framed it as "bullying the bullies"

i think that's kind of judgmental! but i don't see the harm in it either way, i don't think it's like a big burden or anything for the mods, lol

on the real though i would feel 10000x less sympathetic for someone banned for 30 days if that person was told face to face by ppl on the board like this to quit it and kept doing it anyway

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:45 (twelve years ago) link

lol k3v even i'll admit that that basically happens already

the problem with sb - and i have sd this time and again - is the wrong posters consistently got b& by it

lol yeah we're into some heavy "agree to disagree" territory here. I consider whiney a friend but every time he gets banned I'm like "yeah, whiney needs his quarterly ban or he'll just intentionally make as many people feel bad as possible all day"

slightly changing the topic here: i think The dave cool Experimenthttp://i.imgur.com/zi7hd.gif has been a wild success.

i propose that during any poster's 30-day ban, they be permitted to post under a different name given that they assume a character that is the polar opposite of the behavior they were banned for.

⚓ (gr8080), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:49 (twelve years ago) link

mods do a good job for a board this big I think

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:50 (twelve years ago) link

dave cool is a p mediocre gimmick tbh in large part because he wont/cant commit to the character fully

the parable is the parable of the (Lamp), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:51 (twelve years ago) link

plus I think all the people who have been banned by this system, even if they may have been better posters about opinions on things than most of the board on their good days, honestly, they didn't really help me find music to listen to so I don't really care in the end maybe, probably

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:52 (twelve years ago) link

on the board, kind of. this is basically true to an extent with the emailing after 40 thanks to actually decent mods like wmc, forks, and remy, i just don't see why we don't make it into like an open, interactive intervention

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:54 (twelve years ago) link

xp to myself

tebow gotti (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:54 (twelve years ago) link

I still don't like the system for same reasons as before but this seems like a small improvement. The magic number still ignores way too many factors like when the post was made, how many posts has the person made, were they already banned because of that post, what percentage of users does this represent, are the voters even contributors to the board, and on and on.

bnw, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 05:56 (twelve years ago) link

i can think of at least one sb'd person whose taste in music you rated p highly at one point but i think its impossible to argue that sb hasnt made the board, as a whole, less entertaining even if u dont care abt specific sbd posters themselves

basically if jaxon (who doesn't even post now but whose threads in the archive have been p productive) or scott or a bunch of other people were sb'd I would be sad sad prob, but like even then, I don't know, you're probably right, you're definitely right about the entertaining part though

oh i was scrolling too fast and i thought that your post was aerosmith's. i dont really know what kind of music u like tbh - metal? classic funk? - but i guess that doesnt matter i mean i think annoying but passionate posters make ilm better cuz theyre willing to really engage even if theyre stupid or bullying or w/e but i mean most ilm posters have p terrible taste i guess sure

i thought i saw jaxon posting recently??

the parable is the parable of the (Lamp), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 06:44 (twelve years ago) link

I say fuck that; flag post on any motherfucker who can't be, bare minimum, respectful to the people he's arguing with. it's not even that hard. I have permanent beef with deej but he knows I respect him and even when I'm needling him I try to stay aware that he's a person and it's gotta suck to have somebody in your community who pretty much always thinks you're dead wrong.

ime your tone is consistently patronizing when you argue with people and that is a lot worse than whineyesque rude hyperbole

well, so if this change is all semantics and cosmetics, then i'm kinda bummed because "flag post" is much less hilarious than "suggest ban". where from the suggesteban buttezes of tomorrow?

plus it's so innocuous-sounding. flag post? don't mind if i do! much easier to casually "flag" a gnatlike opinion than to straight-up recommend that the dickhole poster behind it be BAND, right?

everything should always be the way it was, imo

for real tho this whole mischaracterization of whiney as a worhtless, pervasively negative bully/ringleader of a cast of abusive posters (i) is hella outdated (ii) doesnt acknowledge that whiney's posts are almost exclusively just jokes. a lot of people like those jokes and find them hilarious, at least 51 people find them obnoxious and distasteful and think they shit up threads with dumb ott controversial opinions. there's no significant bullying anywhere on ilx anymore. i doubt more than a handful of ppl to have ever sb'd since like, 2009, have done so because they felt they were being personally attacked, or sb'd as a response to seeing someone else attacked. that shit doesn't fly anymore afaict

really? i'm way more reluctant to flag than to sb--with flag i feel like a mod is actually going to have to, like, put on his glasses "...really? that's what you flagged me for?"

flopson, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 07:08 (twelve years ago) link

mods like to be flagged though. it's a gesture of deference to their authority and wisdom. hey, like, i could use your help here in the understanding of this thing here, if you don't mind...

Agreed. I feel like my sb habits became increasingly conservative over the years to the point where I would rarely click the button. But in some circumstances, I know I have clicked sb on non-sb worthy (like, minorly confrontational) posts because my negative feelings about the poster were amplified by the perceived strength of past wrongs.

Like for example, Morbs might say something that pisses me off in a thread (which is his thing, I understand) for some reason and I'll remember that time he called me "fascist" once and KA-BLAM...Suggest Ban.

IIRC from suggbann discussions previous, the official mod policy was that it didn't matter which individual post was sb'd (aside from "Renegade" Remy Bean, apparently). It would count in the total against the poster.

I will not be clicking the Flag Post button as cavalierly, knowing that mods will be paying attention.
