i thought i saw jaxon posting recently??

theres a british poster w/the user name 'ledge' who well predates my posting here but we arent v similar he posts readable posts w/caps and punctuation and is one of those v literate london ilb posters who always seems to be reading something impressive whereas a like mangas and books abt elves

I say fuck that; flag post on any motherfucker who can't be, bare minimum, respectful to the people he's arguing with. it's not even that hard. I have permanent beef with deej but he knows I respect him and even when I'm needling him I try to stay aware that he's a person and it's gotta suck to have somebody in your community who pretty much always thinks you're dead wrong.
ime your tone is consistently patronizing when you argue with people and that is a lot worse than whineyesque rude hyperbole

well, so if this change is all semantics and cosmetics, then i'm kinda bummed because "flag post" is much less hilarious than "suggest ban". where from the suggesteban buttezes of tomorrow?
plus it's so innocuous-sounding. flag post? don't mind if i do! much easier to casually "flag" a gnatlike opinion than to straight-up recommend that the dickhole poster behind it be BAND, right?
everything should always be the way it was, imo

for real tho this whole mischaracterization of whiney as a worhtless, pervasively negative bully/ringleader of a cast of abusive posters (i) is hella outdated (ii) doesnt acknowledge that whiney's posts are almost exclusively just jokes. a lot of people like those jokes and find them hilarious, at least 51 people find them obnoxious and distasteful and think they shit up threads with dumb ott controversial opinions. there's no significant bullying anywhere on ilx anymore. i doubt more than a handful of ppl to have ever sb'd since like, 2009, have done so because they felt they were being personally attacked, or sb'd as a response to seeing someone else attacked. that shit doesn't fly anymore afaict
― flopson, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 07:06 (twelve years ago) link
really? i'm way more reluctant to flag than to sb--with flag i feel like a mod is actually going to have to, like, put on his glasses "...really? that's what you flagged me for?"
― flopson, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 07:08 (twelve years ago) link
mods like to be flagged though. it's a gesture of deference to their authority and wisdom. hey, like, i could use your help here in the understanding of this thing here, if you don't mind...

Agreed. I feel like my sb habits became increasingly conservative over the years to the point where I would rarely click the button. But in some circumstances, I know I have clicked sb on non-sb worthy (like, minorly confrontational) posts because my negative feelings about the poster were amplified by the perceived strength of past wrongs.
Like for example, Morbs might say something that pisses me off in a thread (which is his thing, I understand) for some reason and I'll remember that time he called me "fascist" once and KA-BLAM...Suggest Ban.
IIRC from suggbann discussions previous, the official mod policy was that it didn't matter which individual post was sb'd (aside from "Renegade" Remy Bean, apparently). It would count in the total against the poster.
I will not be clicking the Flag Post button as cavalierly, knowing that mods will be paying attention.

I guess where I get really pro-SB is like the people who get repeatedly SB'd are old enough to know better. At their age, they should not need somebody to say "yo, man, check it out, you're really bugging a lot of people & carrying out battles & vendettas long after there's any conceivable value, even entertainment value, in doing so." these are dudes in their thirties. they're not wild kids who just need people to understand their energy levels. they're grownups who think if they can find somebody to be uncool to, that'll be great for them, for whatever reason. I say fuck that; flag post on any motherfucker who can't be, bare minimum, respectful to the people he's arguing with. it's not even that hard. I have permanent beef with deej but he knows I respect him and even when I'm needling him I try to stay aware that he's a person and it's gotta suck to have somebody in your community who pretty much always thinks you're dead wrong. this sort of shit has gotta be worse when it's not just asshole old dude aero but several guys in their thirties who think they're teenagers pokin' & pokin' & pokin'. recourse must be made available against that shit imo.
this is totally otm but let's be real it describes whiney and whiney only

I don't have any hard data to back me up on this, but it's my feeling that the fear of a SB / FP plays part of the role in keeping people acting decently in stressy/het-up situs.

you don't think some people who got sugg-bans (without necessarily getting 51'd) might enjoy the idea of being a controversial poster? that there was never a bragging element to post-yr-sb-number ?
― kale whale (c sharp major), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 13:02 (twelve years ago) link
I was braggin about how nice everyone must have thought I was since they didn't sb me too much. It was a holier-than-thou thing I admit it.
― beachville, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 13:09 (twelve years ago) link
good point tho can we get a thread title change there pls
― flags post o fu (darraghmac), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 13:11 (twelve years ago) link
if people are in a stressy/het-up situation and their immediate reaction to that is to be needlessly offensive or otherwise make sb/fp-worthy posts, would they really have the self-control/nous to think 'oh no but i might be sb'd/fp'd so i shouldn't say that'? I feel like, when your difficult behaviour is brought up, the initial human reaction is much more to go 'fuck these people who can't handle me' and much less to go 'maybe i should tone down my carefully-crafted internet persona'.
i guess i felt like sb was more there for the people who got a month without [controversial poster] around, and less for [controversial poster] to learn any ~important life lessons~ about interacting with other people without pissing them off.
anyway, fp seems like an interesting idea, let's see what happens.
― kale whale (c sharp major), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 13:20 (twelve years ago) link
i symapthize w/ aerosmiths argument but it seems pretty clear that in practice SB wasnt an "anti-bullying" system so much as a "anti-annoying" system which seems like a stupid way to run a message board
ps i never read ILM
― max, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 13:20 (twelve years ago) link
big ps there
― flags post o fu (darraghmac), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 13:23 (twelve years ago) link
xp: yeah, it seems like that's the way it really worked out.
― beachville, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 13:26 (twelve years ago) link
and even in the context of anti-annoying -- like image-bombing wouldve just earned a straight up ban -- SB was more about being a long-term one-note poster -- frankly i dont feel comfortable leaving determinations of "one-note-ness" to a mob
― max, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 13:27 (twelve years ago) link
Like, frogbs was either trolling or had desperately poor communications skills. Whiney is an short-tempered ape who shits on threads by nature (although he certainly has the capacity in his heart to be cool). Most other cases in which I can recall people being sb'd were just quirky.
I can't off the top of my head remember any people who were considered straight "bullies" after Dom. To be fair, I don't remember anything about the circumstances surrounding his ban.
― beachville, Wednesday, 1 February 2012 13:32 (twelve years ago) link
i think SB removed some posters without whom ILX is much better - but those posters should have been permabanned by the mods anyway, regardless of SB. as a system it was entirely wrong-headed for reasons that seem obvious to me.
― first period don't give a fuck, second period gon get cut (lex pretend), Wednesday, 1 February 2012 13:40 (twelve years ago) link
