do they look clear and prevent scratches cause that is what mine does

iatee, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:47 (twelve years ago) link

Doesn't 3m make screen protectors that are super space-age or something? idk

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:47 (twelve years ago) link

I keep phones forever so I try to protect them from my own incompetence. A decent case and screen protector were a must for me.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:48 (twelve years ago) link

shitty iphone screen protectors don't really look clear though, they look cloudy (esp the matte ones)

flagp∞st (dayo), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:48 (twelve years ago) link

prob the worst ones are the zagg invisible shield ones, so awful

flagp∞st (dayo), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:49 (twelve years ago) link

cloudiness > scratches

iatee, Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:50 (twelve years ago) link

NO.

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:50 (twelve years ago) link

ehh iPhone screens are made of glass, even if they get scratched (mine cretainly has a few) you can't notice them when the device is on (same goes for dirt inside the screen etc.)

smudges, bro

also I used to have a matte thing for my iPhone that I liked because with the case it made the whole thing look like a featureless brick (<---joke here)

catbus otm (gbx), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:50 (twelve years ago) link

also I drop my phones all day long and have ne'er gotte a scratch

(autocomplete did that ne'er right there)

catbus otm (gbx), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:51 (twelve years ago) link

screen protectors get smudged too!

I have dropped my iPhone like 50 times and it's still okay (plastic back is cracked tho)

flagp∞st (dayo), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:51 (twelve years ago) link

you guys it's a phone, not a basketball

Vaseline MEN AMAZING JOURNEY (DJP), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:54 (twelve years ago) link

there's an app for that

dayo MY screen protector never ever smudged so deal with it~~

catbus otm (gbx), Thursday, 8 March 2012 18:56 (twelve years ago) link

you can get perfectly fine, clear screen protectors for like $1 off ebay. don't fall for those overpriced shenanigans

Nhex, Thursday, 8 March 2012 19:17 (twelve years ago) link

see idg the idea of protecting something so that it'll have higher resale value - your iProduct is gonna be worth less by the time the next one comes out - is a $30 case going to increase your resale value by $30 when it comes time to resell?

It may if you can avoid visible dings/scratches, which will certainly drop the resale value. Nextworth is great for selling devices, if they are in good condition. I'm getting $292 for my iPad 2. Maybe could get more on ebay or something, but that's a hassle to deal with.

Jeff, Thursday, 8 March 2012 19:18 (twelve years ago) link

I use these on all my iDevices - http://www.powersupportusa.com/accessories/ipad-2/hd-anti-glare-film.html

Jeff, Thursday, 8 March 2012 19:19 (twelve years ago) link

I've got a keyboard case for my ipad, the targus versavu. just checked and they've got one for the new ipad as well.

things I love about it:

- sturdy, hardshell, protects screen and the device itself
- great for writing for long periods on the ipad
- easy to snap the ipad in/out of the holder
- ipad holder swivels so you can prop it in portrait or landscape
- only need to charge the keyboard every 3 months or so

(minor) con:

- bluetooth, so the keyboard goes to sleep after being idle for a while, which means you start typing and then have to wait for it to wake up and retype

You're all savages

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 8 March 2012 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

I guess it adds some heft to the ipad but that doesn't bother me

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Thursday, 8 March 2012 19:27 (twelve years ago) link

big talk from mr 1st gen ipad pfffft

xp

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Thursday, 8 March 2012 19:28 (twelve years ago) link

iatee, Thursday, 8 March 2012 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

didn't u hear I have no ipad right now and will have a 3rd gen one in eight days!

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 8 March 2012 20:02 (twelve years ago) link

wait, you have NO ipad? I hope you at least have some leaves to wipe yr ass with

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Thursday, 8 March 2012 20:04 (twelve years ago) link

I think I bragged on some thread about locking in a trade-in-for-credit price a few days ago. Hopefully it's still honored!

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 8 March 2012 20:08 (twelve years ago) link

Guess what keeping it in a different pocket than your keys costs, nothing

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 8 March 2012 20:09 (twelve years ago) link

yeah but all my other pockets are full of diamond drill bits

catbus otm (gbx), Thursday, 8 March 2012 20:10 (twelve years ago) link

Smart Cover is the way to go for iPad imo, but don't get a leather one or you'll look like a tool

Nicholas Pokémon (silby), Thursday, 8 March 2012 20:10 (twelve years ago) link

Dude who won my iPad 2 for $400 plus shipping just e-mailed me to say he'd pay $380 total. Resisted the urge to e-mail back with "go fuck yourself."
Whatever Ebay's trade-in service is offered $365 with no Ebay or Paypal fee.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 8 March 2012 20:11 (twelve years ago) link

lol Apple shipped my Smart Cover order already

I'm going to sit around folding it in my hands until the actual iPad gets here

milo, I think you can cancel the sale in that case. Screw that guy for not understanding how winning an auction works.

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 8 March 2012 20:12 (twelve years ago) link

open a non-paying bidder report and see if he changes his tune, if not you can cancel the sale and give him negative feedback

the late great, Thursday, 8 March 2012 20:15 (twelve years ago) link

I filed to cancel the sale - I figure if I push the issue and send it to him, he can hassle me later on and Ebay/Paypal are notorious about seller protection.
And I actually come out better anyway, figuring in fees.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 8 March 2012 20:17 (twelve years ago) link

notoriously good or bad?

the late great, Thursday, 8 March 2012 20:20 (twelve years ago) link

notoriously bad

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 8 March 2012 20:22 (twelve years ago) link

oh really? as a 90% buyer, i always felt like they were firmly on the "seller" side

maybe they just suck and piss everyone off.

the late great, Thursday, 8 March 2012 20:24 (twelve years ago) link

i mean that my buy:sell ratio is like 9:1

the late great, Thursday, 8 March 2012 20:24 (twelve years ago) link

It's almost impossible (and meaningless) to leave negative feedback for buyers now, and if anyone files a claim on you odds are you're not getting your money or your item back. Claims can be filed up to 45 days later - so even after you pull money from your Paypal account, you don't know if the buyer is going to screw you in a month when you don't even have the money anymore.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 8 March 2012 20:29 (twelve years ago) link

wait, i don't understand what you're saying ... you're the seller, right? so you can file a NPB report, not send the item and then relist it a few days later.

the late great, Thursday, 8 March 2012 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

i realize that the feedback system is pretty much meaningless for everyone, i'm just saying it would be very easy on your end to back out of the sale.

the late great, Thursday, 8 March 2012 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

In this case, yeah.

But I'm talking about any other sale - a buyer has 45 days to decide the screen was cracked or it didn't function right or w/e (even dishonestly), and Ebay/Paypal decide in the buyer's favor on almost every one of those cases. Sellers are at the mercy of buyers being honest.
So if I pushed this guy to actually pay the $400 he bid, he could receive the item and since he's already shown himself to be shady, he can then screw me by claiming it was an empty box or that the screen was scratched or something - in which case I'll lose the 400, $40 Ebay fees and the iPad.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 8 March 2012 20:58 (twelve years ago) link

yeah I guess protective coverings don't make sense to me because I'm not the kind of guy who upgrades every cycle - and when I do upgrade I'll probably just give it all to my parents, to further ~indoctrinate them~

flagp∞st (dayo), Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:10 (twelve years ago) link

I wear shit out

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:12 (twelve years ago) link

i rarely upgrade, that's exactly why I want to protect the face from minor scratches/grease/bits of liquid/whatever. nothing to do with resale value. i've seen plenty of scratched/cracked apple screens to want to play it safe

Nhex, Thursday, 8 March 2012 21:32 (twelve years ago) link

that's a good point

kind of makes you wonder how ebay continues to function

i look like a tool?

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Friday, 9 March 2012 01:01 (twelve years ago) link

i would have gotten the plastic ones if the colours werent so fugly

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Friday, 9 March 2012 01:02 (twelve years ago) link

I have a butt-ugly green SmartCover but I need to get something that will protect the back.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 9 March 2012 01:06 (twelve years ago) link

uh the back is made of aluminum to protect the insides

Nicholas Pokémon (silby), Friday, 9 March 2012 01:13 (twelve years ago) link

this is my philosophy

Nicholas Pokémon (silby), Friday, 9 March 2012 01:13 (twelve years ago) link

the leather smartcovers just seem like I dunno half of a briefcase to me or something

though obviously the synthetic colors are mostly ugly, only viable choices are grey or different grey probably

Nicholas Pokémon (silby), Friday, 9 March 2012 01:13 (twelve years ago) link

The black leather does not make you look like a tool fwiw, if you have an iPad you are already there
