A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Friday, 9 March 2012 01:20 (twelve years ago) link

tbh tho i like the smartcovers cuz they are so slim, i never really got the idea of buying this thin beautiful thing and stuffing it into an oversized moleskine or wtv

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Friday, 9 March 2012 01:20 (twelve years ago) link

manky = grot-stained and probably a bit smelly

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 9 March 2012 01:32 (twelve years ago) link

A friend maintains that the leather smartcovers are worth it because the other ones get grubby immediately. That said she has a three-year-old.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 9 March 2012 01:48 (twelve years ago) link

And by grubby I do mean manky

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 9 March 2012 01:48 (twelve years ago) link

I am not american, under no circumstances is MLB ever going to be one of my key reasons for owning an Apple TV

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 9 March 2012 22:40 (twelve years ago) link

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 9 March 2012 22:42 (twelve years ago) link

I kind of find it hilarious that they don't bother to remove seemingly-irrelevant entries on there in countries where those sports aren't relevant. idk guys, if it takes off they'll internationalize this thing.

The main draw for it in the US is, in order: browse and play music from iTunes libraries (which you can do anywhere), Netflix, followed closely by a tie between youtube and ability to rent/buy video from the online store. I'm guessing the video selection sucks elsewhere so it's mainly streaming iTunes and youtube? Sorry.

whats the deal with the 4G data plans? is there an acceptably priced on for the US?

oh also i thought i heard about some new thing (may have even been ipad3) that would kind of make apple tv obsolete. Is this true?? i was thinking of hinting at one for my birthday from the moms. do any of you have one? what do you mostly use it for?

also why the hell cant i use my iphone as a hotspot? or can i? (w/o jailbreak i mean)

"whats the deal with the 4G data plans? is there an acceptably priced on for the US?"

what ATT calls 4G now is the same as what they called 3G three months ago

akm, Sunday, 11 March 2012 20:03 (twelve years ago) link

iphone have hotspot plans, they just costs extra. different on verizon versus at&t I think

valleys of your mind (mh), Sunday, 11 March 2012 20:24 (twelve years ago) link

My wife just told me she ordered me a new iPad. This should be fun.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 11 March 2012 20:27 (twelve years ago) link

oh akm. I guess im asking are there any decent data plans for ipads or should i just do the iphone hotspot

At least for now, if you use an iPhone for a hotspot you'll be limited to 3G speeds not the faster 4G the new iPads offer (where available).

Pay-by-the-month data plans:
$14.99/mo. 250mb (AT&T)
$20.00/mo. 1gb (Verizon)
$30.00/mo. 3gb (AT&T) or 2gb (Verizon)
$50.00/mo. 5gb (either AT&T or Verizon)

There's a footnote that says "Includes Wi-Fi browsing; refer to carrier website for terms and conditions." That I don't get at all - how can the carriers charge you for using a wi-fi hotspot that doesn't even use their cellular service?

everything else is secondary (Lee626), Monday, 12 March 2012 07:57 (twelve years ago) link

They don't but I think AT&T throw in unlimited data access through their hotspots.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Monday, 12 March 2012 13:08 (twelve years ago) link

thanks dudes. my brain hurts when i try to work money shit out.

BUT

My iphone said it was on 4G today! Am I the only one who didnt know about this. I did a speed test (directly outside my work building so not the best reception) and registered download speed 7.75mbps

The new update makes 4GS (and maybe 4G) phones say 4G instead of 3G, even though nothing really changed. Apple just decided that they were willing to call their download speeds 4G now.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 00:00 (twelve years ago) link

It's only on the 4S -- its chipset can do HSPA+, which T-Mobile has been calling 4G for a long time.

valleys of your mind (mh), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 00:02 (twelve years ago) link

That is, HSPA+ is about twice as fast as HSPA (fastest GSM 3G network available to older iPhone 4 on AT&T) or CDMA (fastest current 3G service from Verizon or Sprint, even on iPhone 4S).

everything else is secondary (Lee626), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 01:47 (twelve years ago) link

can someone on 3g do a speed test pls

you'd have to do a test on both in the same location, though

valleys of your mind (mh), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 03:40 (twelve years ago) link

iPhone 4S: AT&T vs. Sprint vs. Verizon

Extensive test of all three US iPhone carriers conducted throughout California in several urban and rural locations. AT&T's pseudo-4G HSPA+ is indeed the fastest, averaging more than twice as fast as Verizon and almost three times faster than Sprint.

everything else is secondary (Lee626), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 07:05 (twelve years ago) link

Fastest... on an iPhone. It'd be interesting to see the same tests with an iPad/LTE.

xp That's because the last dozen or so posts are about using an iPhone as a hotspot, along with a wifi-only iPad. We'll have to wait a few more days (16 March) for the new iPad to ship, and probably a few more days after that for tech sites to compare the two carriers' speed. Both AT&T and Verizon's 4G should be blazingly fast, but neither has 4G coverage outside of some cities. And here, Verizon is far ahead of AT&T in building out their 4G LTE network:

http://www.verizonwireless.com/images_b2c/ipad/overlays/MapOverlay_att.jpg

However, if you're in one of the many areas where there's no 4G coverage, you fall back on 3G where AT&T is sometimes twice as fast as Verizon's 3G (but not always, since AT&T doesn't have HSPA+ everywhere). Both carriers are continuing to add more 4G coverage.

everything else is secondary (Lee626), Tuesday, 13 March 2012 17:50 (twelve years ago) link

and by 4G we mean LTE which still isn't true 4G

mh, Tuesday, 13 March 2012 17:54 (twelve years ago) link

There's no true 4G yet (as you no doubt know), but LTE as it now exists is vastly faster than any of the 3G technologies. How are they going to distinguish real 4G when it becomes available?
