if you hold it close enough to your face you can only just discern pixels, but in ordinary use you would never do that

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 05:00 (twelve years ago) link

weight and thickness almost indiscernible btw, you really have to be working hard in order to see or feel the difference

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 05:02 (twelve years ago) link

markers i can't run a wall-bounce test until icloud backup is restored (50 mins remaining)

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 05:03 (twelve years ago) link

- 90% to 0% battery in just under six hours, with screen constantly on at 100% brightness, downloading ~20 GB of apps and doing some moderate gfx
- pdfs look incredible
- new yorker looks like shit

i'm starting to think that the billions and billions of 72ppi images out there on the web are going to have to be replaced, one by one

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 March 2012 11:11 (twelve years ago) link

i mean either that or all the images out there are going to look really, really small

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 March 2012 11:17 (twelve years ago) link

put that way, are web designers actually keeping everything at 72 but just making all their images larger?

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 March 2012 11:18 (twelve years ago) link

surely the browser engine scales things up appropriately? or does it really honor pixel measurements and make all web pages 1/4 of the size? that would be nuts.

ledge, Friday, 16 March 2012 11:27 (twelve years ago) link

well i don't really know, but an image on a 264ppi screen will be half the apparent size as the same image on a 132ppi screen, right?

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 March 2012 11:45 (twelve years ago) link

you would think, but then the same would happen to text specified in pixels - not uncommon practice in css - which would render it unreadable. so i would guess (oh for an ipad 3 of my own) that apple must scale things up to some theoretical non-minuscule 'pixel' size which is bigger than an actual pixel? idk. it's complicated.

ledge, Friday, 16 March 2012 11:54 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i would imagine there would be a hard lower bound of say 7pt effective size. web designers have had like a decade to use ems at this point though.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 March 2012 12:04 (twelve years ago) link

yeah but when images are in pixels it's understandable that they still get used as a universal measure. What do you do when you want text and images to match up? Somewhere I can hear the tinny voice of a web designer screaming "THE WEB IS NOT PRINT!" but looking at many sites these days you could easily be fooled; I think that voice is getting quieter and quieter.

ledge, Friday, 16 March 2012 12:11 (twelve years ago) link

i honestly don't know! i've been away from the coalface too long.

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 March 2012 12:17 (twelve years ago) link

same here tbh.

ledge, Friday, 16 March 2012 12:21 (twelve years ago) link

some good stuff on a list apart, as usual:

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 March 2012 12:23 (twelve years ago) link

ah "browser specific issues". the one and only reason i am exceedingly glad i don't do actual web design any more.

ledge, Friday, 16 March 2012 12:26 (twelve years ago) link

my takeaway here is that the old mentality of "reduce the K size of your image to be no bigger than it absolutely needs to be at that exact size" is out the window; now it's "make your image as big as it might ever conceivably need to be rendered"

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 March 2012 12:27 (twelve years ago) link

I may own a new iPad. Just chucking my apps etc onto it now.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 16 March 2012 12:32 (twelve years ago) link

Yo dude that wasn't an iPad, it was a pizza

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 16 March 2012 13:33 (twelve years ago) link

do you guys think they already replaced most of the demo units in apple stores with ipad 3s? probably right? i'm sure they still have a couple ipad 2s out too since they're still selling them, but as of today this is the flagship ipad, so

markers, Friday, 16 March 2012 14:11 (twelve years ago) link

also, y'all who are buying this, how much storage are you getting? why?

markers, Friday, 16 March 2012 14:14 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, there were reports/pics of them swapping out the store units.

my 32GB one is on a truck. I had a 16GB first-gen iPad, never really loaded it up with music or whatevs, figure I'll need to double that to keep up with the times

mh, Friday, 16 March 2012 14:50 (twelve years ago) link

ah cool. thanks! 32 seems reasonable

markers, Friday, 16 March 2012 14:54 (twelve years ago) link

kinda tempted to stop by the apple store just to see one of these things in person

catbus otm (gbx), Friday, 16 March 2012 16:00 (twelve years ago) link

I just got a 16gb wi-fi; I don't really store music or video on it, sand we have wi-fi at home and at work.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 16 March 2012 16:06 (twelve years ago) link

I got the 32 gig wifi. Previously had the ipad 2 32 gig wifi, with about 10 gigs of free space.

Jeff, Friday, 16 March 2012 16:18 (twelve years ago) link

I'm going with the 16GB because that was fine on the ipad 2 for me - don't really put music or movies on the thing as it's mainly for work - but I have a sneaking suspicion that the enhanced display is going to cause app, file, and image size bloat. interested to see how that pans out.

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Friday, 16 March 2012 16:47 (twelve years ago) link

16GB 4G just arrived. Wheeeeeee

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 16 March 2012 17:18 (twelve years ago) link

mh, Friday, 16 March 2012 18:33 (twelve years ago) link

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Friday, 16 March 2012 18:53 (twelve years ago) link

markers, Friday, 16 March 2012 19:28 (twelve years ago) link

i can now say that i've opened this thread from an ipad (3)

markers, Friday, 16 March 2012 19:29 (twelve years ago) link

I will not get to experience the wonder till next week. How dare my wife get me a present but wait too long to get the first batch!

EZ Snappin, Friday, 16 March 2012 19:31 (twelve years ago) link

dope present imo

markers, Friday, 16 March 2012 19:32 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, she's the bomb.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 16 March 2012 19:33 (twelve years ago) link

So apparently there's no way to get iPhoto albums on your iPad without syncing all your apps to the Mac as well. I tried doing it without syncing apps and it fucking deleted all my apps. SO angry right now

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 21:18 (twelve years ago) link

Give us the best screen in the universe and NO WAY to get our photos on there, good one Apple you divs

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 21:19 (twelve years ago) link

i think you're supposed to grab an iphone w/ ios 5 installed & then bring up each individual picture on your mac's screen, take a picture of it, then wait for it to go up into icloud and once you've done this for all your pictures you can put them into albums on yr ipad

markers, Friday, 16 March 2012 21:27 (twelve years ago) link

that's ridiculous

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 21:28 (twelve years ago) link

No help on Google at all, it's like the fanboys just suck it up

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 21:28 (twelve years ago) link

nobody knows what you're talking about

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Friday, 16 March 2012 22:44 (twelve years ago) link

If you want to put iPhoto albums on your iPad, you can only do it through iTunes, and iTunes either transfers all your iOS apps to your Mac (wtfffff) or deletes all your apps off your iPad. I bought the PhotoSync app which does the simple thing that Apple is apparently too thick to implement.

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 23:08 (twelve years ago) link

who cares if yr apps are synced to yr Mac tho? Why is that a problem?

Clay, Friday, 16 March 2012 23:10 (twelve years ago) link

Because (a) they don't do anything on a Mac (b) I don't have enough drive space for 13 GB of apps

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

I just want to put my photos on my iPad, that's all

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

he muttered quietly to himself

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Friday, 16 March 2012 23:15 (twelve years ago) link

;_;

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 16 March 2012 23:17 (twelve years ago) link

latest iPhoto should support photostream, right?
