eight months pass...

i tried two new (to me) badgers, earlier this week. first gold, and summer gold. neither of them really appealed, perhaps you think differently.

i normally steer clear of marstons, but i tried an old empire, perhaps because of the design, and i was quite impressed.

has anyone tried three floyds alpha king?

aw man! how comes archel was drinking dark star hophead a year ago? i only discovered it about two months ago. ANYHOO, it WILL WIN best beer at the GBBF this year, it is aces, kind of a lovely mid-point between DEUCHARS IPA and LANDLORD!!!

I seem to do most of my drinking at home these days & buy most of my beer at the supermarket (living the suburban dream): the current favourite is Brakespear's Organic Ale. This is i) superlatively delicious: properly bitter in a way bottled beer so often isn't & unpasteurised so it has that 'from the pub' taste, ii) not too strong (four point something, rather than five point something like most bottled beer), so you can drink plenty of it, & iii) ridiculously cheap - 3 bottles for £4 at Asda.

Haha, I can still remember the first time I had my first pint of hophead shortly after moving down here a few years ago, I think it finally convinced me just how much better real ale is than bland megacorp bears. And it was £1.70 a pint then - those were the days!

It's good, but I'm not sure it counts as beer.

Of course it counts as beer - lambic beers I believe actually existed before "convential" beer.

Oh, if anyone has an Oddbins in their area, they do three rather nice beers from a brwerey called Williams from Alloa: 'Gold', 'Red' and 'Black'. The names are self-desriptive. And the best bit? The 500ml bottles only cost £1.29, making them the cheapest beer they sell in there.

does anyone have any idea where i can buy mild in bottles? i had a few pints in the royal oak last week, the first time i'd had any in ages, and it struck me as the perfect summer drink.

I'd say try Morrissons, I picked up a bottle of Mathers (iirc) Black beer from there on Saturday, just the thing for making Sheffield staout apparently (which is black beer shandy!!)

You can get pint bottles of Mann's Brown Ale from Asda. This is more or less mild - it's less than 3 per cent abv, which takes a bit of getting used to, but it is very pleasant esp. in summer.

Microbrewery stuff can beat all challengers when in best form, but I've also had some of the worst beer from them.

Belgian beers are good but way too sweet at times -- St. Bernardus is a favorite, all kinds of Chimay come next.

I probably have ended up drinking mostly Boulevard Wheat (regional out of Kansas City) and Newcastle, lately. My beer horizons have been expanded greatly with the addition of a new bar to town that has around 100 beers on tap. Unfortunately, that means that they have one keg per beer, so if it's out, it's out until the distributor delivers more. It also means I'll never get to sample everything they have at one time since they'll rotate out beers...

"Microbrewery" is kind of an overused term, though. I've heard people refer to everything from a brew pub that only serves beer in-house to Sam Adams refered to as "microbrews." Worst has to be a brew pub I went to where we found zero good beers out of the beer sampler. The wheat one tasted like someone had taken bad wheat beer and added Five Alive.

Tried a Unibroue (Quebec) "Terrible" ale today at 10.5% alcohol. It wasn't bad but nothing special either. $8.29 for a 750 ml bottle.
