I used to listen to Hardcore History but he was too aggro or something. Maybe that's not quite right. Too focused on wars and dates and not enough color commentary, maybe? But this was years ago, and the fact that his podcast is still going makes me think it's worth trying again. I am definitely interested in Germanic tribes and the fall of the Roman Empire (although four hours is a little long for commute entertainment).

carl agatha, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:07 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, I could see his style getting grating. Like the whole conceit of the episode I listened to was that the Germanic tribes were just like big biker gangs. Which I suppose is fine as far as it goes, but he just kept repeating it.
I also subscribed to this podcast "The History of Rome" which so far has 173 episodes! Though it's getting towards the fall. It's supposed to be very good.

Interesting... I might check that one out, too.

I don't know if my attention span could handle that.

I'm out. Tonight is the only night this week I'm not doing something (although Friday what I'm doing is "sitting on the couch staring exhaustedly into space then going to bed early so I can get up at 6 am for class on Saturday").

carl agatha, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 21:22 (twelve years ago) link

I can't go either, but I wish our team the best of luck.

I'm on the fence.

1. Chicago Authors
2. Battlestar Galactica

I would attend and do whatever I could to help.

feeling noncommittal. Chicago authors sounds fun but I think I forgot most of BG, we'd need Carl agatha for that one

I dunno. Knowing these bozos it would be the original BSG series, about which I know very little that would make its way into trivia. Also I tend to know all there is to know about plot/characters and little to nothing about actors' names and other trivia appropriate... trivia.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 23:44 (twelve years ago) link

Like I could sit you down and tell you the entire store of the BSG reboot from beginning to end with minimal errors but can't remember the name of the guy who plays Chief or the Canadian city in which it was filmed or even the year it first aired.

Is chemical states always a category? I could be bothered to memorize the elements' abbreviations, for sure.

This is probably misplaced but I am flattered and pleased by that statement.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 23:51 (twelve years ago) link

Wait, not Jesse's statement. Nick's.

when we were talking about music interview podcasts, i forgot about this relatively new one. it's not super in-depth but they do have some interesting interviewees - not the same people you always see (0wen from my current band was interviewed in the first episode): http://www.lowtimespodcast.com/category/podcast/

When I stood up to get off the train a few minutes ago, some people quickly alerted me to a cell phone that was on the seat. I glanced at it, said "Not mine," and left. I'm kicking myself now because I actually know whose it was. The guy who had been sitting next to me (and had gotten off before me) I had recognized as Tom Geoghegan. Had I picked it up, I probably could've gotten it back to him somehow.

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 15:21 (twelve years ago) link

I thought about contacting him, anyway, but I'm not sure it would do any good. Presumably he's realized by now that he left his phone on the train.

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 15:22 (twelve years ago) link

I've met that guy. I wish you'd given his phone back to him, too, and then mentioned you have a friend who needs a (better) job (me).

With your prehensile tail?

My hands were covered in cuticle cream that I did not want to eat.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 17:09 (twelve years ago) link

pretty sure you're only supposed to put cuticle cream on your cuticles, not your hands, fyi

Being fed grapes is one of those things that everyone should experience before they expire.

Paul Smon (La Lechera), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 17:29 (twelve years ago) link

And after, too.

(Dre) vs. (Eazy), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 17:34 (twelve years ago) link

good point! but i would prefer to experience it before. in the afterlife i hope to have a prehensile tail.

i listened to a podcast about the donner party today. it wasn't very good but it will make me read more about the donner party at least.

Wow you guys, the IL Sec. of State's website has changed. It's all up-to-date looking.

I'm glad none of you were here to witness my way too enthusiastic response to that news. (It included calling out to my coworkers, who also responded enthusiastically.)

There's an interactive vanity plate selection page and guess what? DINGUS 6 is available. (Which means five other Illinoisans have license plates that say "DINGUS" on them.)

Are you serious? Ha. I actually am pretty excited too, but then I thought you might tease me about my excitement. But it's nice that we are both so equally extremely lame.
