Chevy gets some of the best one liners but also some of the clunkiest bits, and if some of those are his own idea that might explain a lot.

don't forget the faltermeyer multiplier helps fletch.

chevy's really funny, i love his bits. but the show can live without him. i'd rather it didn't though.

the faltermeyer multiplier would make a fantastic display name

ENBB & I saw Joel McHale today! There was no time to shout "six seasons and a movie" :(

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 12 April 2012 20:47 (twelve years ago) link

should've shouted, "I compare you to a kiss from a rose!"

President Keyes, Friday, 13 April 2012 00:09 (twelve years ago) link

at the risk of drawing the wrath of the fans (again): that had to be the worst episode of the season so far, right? i love britta (easily my favorite character) but her whole plot just seemed tonally off and not very funny

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 13 April 2012 20:07 (twelve years ago) link

i am also more of a chang fan than other people but the chevy/chang plotline was awful

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 13 April 2012 20:08 (twelve years ago) link

yeah both plots were super weak and this was probably in the bottom half of episodes this season, but still plenty of lols. like Annie's "laugh" when they were talking about Jeff not being able to make women crazy and pretty much all of Jim Rash. the end was pretty sweet, closing all the knowing glances with Abed and Troy.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 13 April 2012 20:09 (twelve years ago) link

yeah this was weak

Thoughts? You must have loads. (a hoy hoy), Friday, 13 April 2012 20:13 (twelve years ago) link

Pierce & Chang was weaksauce and should've been awesome

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 13 April 2012 20:17 (twelve years ago) link

I didn't love it, but that just means it was "Bart's Girlfriend" rather than "Lisa On Ice." The Chang/Pierce b-story was completely pointless and dull, but I loved the texting hijinx. And even though the dean seemed shoehorned into Troy & Abed's apartment, it worked because Rash is brilliant.

Dancing with Mr. T (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 13 April 2012 20:20 (twelve years ago) link

Rash is awesome

Most of this ep was dumb but I liked the texting/fake carnival

an independent online phenomenon (DJP), Friday, 13 April 2012 20:22 (twelve years ago) link

dean was funny, esp. the "what's wrong annie? when you came out of the room, you looked happy, but then your smile slowly faded into a frown and now you look upset" line (paraphrased obv)

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 13 April 2012 20:22 (twelve years ago) link

Also everyone questioning the Dean's presence and his wounded reaction every time made me chuckle

an independent online phenomenon (DJP), Friday, 13 April 2012 20:23 (twelve years ago) link

abed's delivery of "yes" after troy asked "do you wanna watch blade tonight?" was perfect

JIM THOMETHEUS (zachlyon), Friday, 13 April 2012 20:27 (twelve years ago) link

but yeah, ep wasn't great, the ending of the britta plot felt like it was developed from some 'girls only like assholes' nice guy(tm) bullshit which is exactly what i would expect from ugh harmon's annoying side

JIM THOMETHEUS (zachlyon), Friday, 13 April 2012 20:29 (twelve years ago) link

I dunno, it was kinda silly but it was fun. I love Abed's "Guys I'm going to need your help reacting to something" when Dean shows up at the door

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 13 April 2012 21:30 (twelve years ago) link

haha yeah that was great too

I dunno, partially it's just that anything was going to feel like a letdown after last week but... they put Jeff and Shirley together and then had Jeff totally ignore her (boo) plus the whole Chang/Pierce thing didn't work (aside from the "first fight" gag, which I enjoyed)

an independent online phenomenon (DJP), Friday, 13 April 2012 21:33 (twelve years ago) link

The moment of the episode was Annie's fake carny laugh.

Träumerei, Friday, 13 April 2012 22:07 (twelve years ago) link

part of my distance from the episode was the feeling that I'd seen Caper Annie be funnier in previous episodes (chloroforming the security guard at the law firm party, macing herself, sending Abed on a wild goose chase to cover up that she broke his DVD, etc)

an independent online phenomenon (DJP), Friday, 13 April 2012 22:10 (twelve years ago) link

Rash is awesome

"boy, this guy doesn't give vampires a square inch of leeway"

Quite a few good lines.

"Her pain unifies us!"

"Annie, subdue your guest."

"That's right, Britta. It's a banana!"

people who have been watching this since the beginning and loved s1/s2: has the show totally fallen off or am i just getting tired of its shtick(s)

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Friday, 13 April 2012 22:39 (twelve years ago) link

oh boy you are about to be the brunt of a slew of sarcastic posts from a one mr. deric haircare (yes it has fallen off)

s1ocki: The best episodes from s3 are as good as any from the first two but it's much less consistent imo. And the worst eps of s3 really blow. I'm one of the people who wishes it was still more grounded in the school setting at least some of the time.

But, weirdly, while I've been pretty critical of this season, I actually enjoyed this one all right. Not mind-blowing but a perfectly fine ep imo. Unlike with "Urban Matrimony" or "Contemporary Impressionists", the storylines in this all made sense to me and resolved well. I like that they finally came back to the Troy/Britta tension they'd developed earlier in the season, returned to the AC repair story with Troy, and continued to develop the Annie/Jeff thing. Also, and not least importantly, there were good laughs. "I need help reacting to something" was my favourite.

the ending of the britta plot felt like it was developed from some 'girls only like assholes' nice guy(tm) bullshit

I think it was more "lack of self-consciousness is attractive".

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 13 April 2012 23:30 (twelve years ago) link

i think there should be a rule that people refer to television episodes "friends"-style ('that one where they...') rather than use their actual titles cuz i never know those.

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Friday, 13 April 2012 23:53 (twelve years ago) link

Some fall-off, not unsalvageable. They should have picked a funnier subject than Biology.

Träumerei, Saturday, 14 April 2012 00:01 (twelve years ago) link

Ha, I forgot that they were taking biology together! Has that class even come up since the first couple of episodes?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 14 April 2012 00:04 (twelve years ago) link

im probably the 20th person to say this in this thread but besides the occasionally funny pun they pretty much ruined chang eh

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Saturday, 14 April 2012 00:05 (twelve years ago) link

I think it was more "lack of self-consciousness is attractive".

i was talking more about the one-nice-text-from-nice-guy-troy-immediately-turns-britta-off thing and then annie becoming a writer mouthpiece even though she's in love with jeff.

anyway does anyone else just feel like the hiatus has had a negative effect on the episodes? harmon was talking about how there's a definite difference in tone because the staff was all bummed. imo these post-hiatus eps just haven't been as good. your agreement/disagreement probably hinges on whether or not you enjoyed the pillow fight civil war (it didn't do much for me).

JIM THOMETHEUS (zachlyon), Saturday, 14 April 2012 00:14 (twelve years ago) link

imo last night was way way better than the other episodes since they came back (which i wasn't gonna hate on itt because this thread had enough drama but really some of those were pretty depressing)

some dude, Saturday, 14 April 2012 00:54 (twelve years ago) link

i just watched the ken burns one, it was pretty blah i thought aside from some good jokes. like ppl said upthread not going FULL ken burns style kinda ruined the joke.

s1ocki: It's the one where a person is enabled to represent the 'collective humanity' of Subway Inc, enrols as a student, and then has a relationship with Britta? I think it's still up on the Citytv site.

x-post can we just have some kind of shorthand for this kind of talk so we don't have to read the 200th iteration of it? Like NAGAS2: Not as good as Season 2.

President Keyes, Saturday, 14 April 2012 01:46 (twelve years ago) link

i did see that one, it was ok

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Saturday, 14 April 2012 01:48 (twelve years ago) link

Wait a minute, didn't they film all these, along with the other ones, before the hiatus? I can't really think of a way to find this out but I was under the impression they write and shoot these all in one block.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 14 April 2012 02:27 (twelve years ago) link

I was under the impression the hiatus was pretty much a scheduling thing. Does anyone here work in TV? How is a show like this shot? I imagine they shot this entire season last fall before airing the first ep.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 14 April 2012 02:33 (twelve years ago) link

only part of the last episode that bugged me was pierce/chang. This is the second time they've had a non diagetic song play while someone gets pointlessly emotional with Chang (remember Britta and "Hello"?) and it's just beneath them.

da croupier, Saturday, 14 April 2012 02:34 (twelve years ago) link

xp harmon said that the eps we saw after the hiatus were all written and filmed after it had started. unless i'm misremembering.

JIM THOMETHEUS (zachlyon), Saturday, 14 April 2012 02:36 (twelve years ago) link

I'm a big Ken Jeong defendant but it feels like the writers have no sense of Chang's character beyond incoherent wackiness at this point, would not be upset if they got rid of him.

da croupier, Saturday, 14 April 2012 02:37 (twelve years ago) link

lol defender, I mean
