which days are people going to the GBBF? Whitesnake M3, Feast of Fiddles or Bootleg Abba?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 29 June 2006 14:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Monteith's Golden Ale. I could drink that all day. (and when I was in NZ, I did)

S- (sgh), Friday, 30 June 2006 02:31 (eighteen years ago) link

what tastes like Killian's Irish Red, but good?

milo z (mlp), Friday, 30 June 2006 02:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I seem to do most of my drinking at home these days & buy most of my beer at the supermarket (living the suburban dream): the current favourite is Brakespear's Organic Ale. This is i) superlatively delicious: properly bitter in a way bottled beer so often isn't & unpasteurised so it has that 'from the pub' taste, ii) not too strong (four point something, rather than five point something like most bottled beer), so you can drink plenty of it, & iii) ridiculously cheap - 3 bottles for £4 at Asda.

I would like to point out that all beer mings EXCEPT STRAWBERRY BEER!

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Friday, 30 June 2006 08:44 (eighteen years ago) link

It's good, but I'm not sure it counts as beer.

Custard Subsidence (kate), Friday, 30 June 2006 08:44 (eighteen years ago) link

I think it's because Dark Star is (apropriately enough) from within the accursed urbs of the miserydungeon they call Brighton.

Haha, I can still remember the first time I had my first pint of hophead shortly after moving down here a few years ago, I think it finally convinced me just how much better real ale is than bland megacorp bears. And it was £1.70 a pint then - those were the days!

It's good, but I'm not sure it counts as beer.

Of course it counts as beer - lambic beers I believe actually existed before "convential" beer.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 30 June 2006 10:24 (eighteen years ago) link

er, a rather unconventional way of spelling "conventional".

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 30 June 2006 10:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh, if anyone has an Oddbins in their area, they do three rather nice beers from a brwerey called Williams from Alloa: 'Gold', 'Red' and 'Black'. The names are self-desriptive. And the best bit? The 500ml bottles only cost £1.29, making them the cheapest beer they sell in there.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 30 June 2006 10:29 (eighteen years ago) link

"has anyone tried three floyds alpha king?"

it's good. it might even be my favorite of theirs. i like hoppy stuff a lot.

I have developed a real Badger habit. I especially like Blandford Fly, but Golden Glory, Golden Champion and Stinger are all good too.

does anyone have any idea where i can buy mild in bottles? i had a few pints in the royal oak last week, the first time i'd had any in ages, and it struck me as the perfect summer drink.

this site suggests tring sainsburys:

http://www.planetbods.org/mildinlondon/whatismild

which i just did, with no success.

toby (tsg20), Monday, 3 July 2006 08:42 (eighteen years ago) link

I'd say try Morrissons, I picked up a bottle of Mathers (iirc) Black beer from there on Saturday, just the thing for making Sheffield staout apparently (which is black beer shandy!!)

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 3 July 2006 09:31 (eighteen years ago) link

You can get pint bottles of Mann's Brown Ale from Asda. This is more or less mild - it's less than 3 per cent abv, which takes a bit of getting used to, but it is very pleasant esp. in summer.

bham (bham), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Microbrewery stuff can beat all challengers when in best form, but I've also had some of the worst beer from them.

Belgian beers are good but way too sweet at times -- St. Bernardus is a favorite, all kinds of Chimay come next.

I probably have ended up drinking mostly Boulevard Wheat (regional out of Kansas City) and Newcastle, lately. My beer horizons have been expanded greatly with the addition of a new bar to town that has around 100 beers on tap. Unfortunately, that means that they have one keg per beer, so if it's out, it's out until the distributor delivers more. It also means I'll never get to sample everything they have at one time since they'll rotate out beers...

I've also had some of the worst beer from them.

VERY true!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:59 (eighteen years ago) link

"Microbrewery" is kind of an overused term, though. I've heard people refer to everything from a brew pub that only serves beer in-house to Sam Adams refered to as "microbrews." Worst has to be a brew pub I went to where we found zero good beers out of the beer sampler. The wheat one tasted like someone had taken bad wheat beer and added Five Alive.

Tried a Unibroue (Quebec) "Terrible" ale today at 10.5% alcohol. It wasn't bad but nothing special either. $8.29 for a 750 ml bottle.

I quite enjoyed my draft Anchor Liberty Ale the other night - tasted much better than the bottled ones.

My favorites are Franziskaner and Duvel.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 24 July 2006 05:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Those Unibroue beers are generally "nothing special," at least not enough to warrant the price.

Red Dog is the king of cheap beers.
Paulaner is the king of not-so cheap beers.
Corona w/lime will fit any and every occasion.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Monday, 24 July 2006 15:13 (eighteen years ago) link

To me Budweiser is the best tasting cheap American beer, especially in bottles. Brews like Pabst and Carling are just fashion accessories.

Shortlist of favorite beers (mostly local/micro):

Bell's Two-Hearted
Lakefront Cream City pale ale
Tyranena Bourbon Brown
Dogfishhead stuff
Lake Louie Scotch Ale
Abita Turbo Dog

Cheap-ish:

High Life
Leine's Red
Pabst, sometimes

Bud is gross.

There seems to be a surplus of okay-tasting but too-sweet American ales and German/Belgian (or Belgian-style) Weissebeers. It's much harder to find a good tasting one that isn't too sweet.

Retro label, "black label" in the name, etc.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 24 July 2006 20:11 (eighteen years ago) link

I mean LOOK AT THE FUCKING LABEL!

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 24 July 2006 20:11 (eighteen years ago) link

lets face it, if the pint you like gives you that bit more you can bet it's Carling black label.

It's far from hipsterish over here - pretty bog standard session lager, and not particularly nice.

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 24 July 2006 20:13 (eighteen years ago) link

that was my impression also, porkpie

are you are marstons lad? i'm not, but i've been sinking old empires recently. i like the bottle too, ships are in right now, are they not? and clear glass too!

-- (688), Monday, 24 July 2006 20:16 (eighteen years ago) link

I drank pedigree a lot when I was younger, I think I've had Old Empire a few times, good but not spectacular.

I was drinking Discovery at the weekend, which seems to be completely changeable, one time really good, the next distinctly average.

In this hot weather I've been drinking more lager, mainly Staropromen and Saqn Miguel, more as thirst quenchers than anything else. The usual stuff I've enjoyed a lot lately like Achel just doesn't feel right in such heat.

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 24 July 2006 20:19 (eighteen years ago) link

nickalish, they seriously need to start reairing that commercial
