i don't think i love the beatles montage

Well, there goes the budget for the rest of the season...

It's incredible that he was able to seduce a gilmore girl, yes.

Also, Mr. Belding really let himself go.

I think she was in a headspace to fuck anyone who didn't have two heads. Pete was lucky. And now he's a stalker. Except, wtf was that heart in the foggy glass? This has disaster written all over it, except this is Mad Men...so we'll probably never see anything about it ever again.

Peggy failing at the banter slayed me.

The Beatles montage at the end was a bit on the nose but I thought it worked pretty well.
― bark ruffalo (latebloomer), Monday, 7 May 2012 03:23 (twelve years ago) link
pete in the hotel room also great.
― s.clover, Monday, 7 May 2012 03:31 (twelve years ago) link
Also "on the nose" endings are awesome and adorable. I like it when shows aren't afraid of artifice. That's always been a mad men strength.

was it really Mr. Belding?
― bark ruffalo (latebloomer), Monday, 7 May 2012 03:39 (twelve years ago) link
i saw "mr. belding" references on twitter and not having seen much saved by the bell i thought it might be a reference to the ad agency foote, cone & belding.
also, i'm drunk right now; been gulping manhattans for two hours.

Hey hey hey, what is going on here?
(The answer is apparently a lot of non-dairy whipped topping)
― C-L, Monday, 7 May 2012 06:24 (twelve years ago) link
poor peggy, she really got a lot of shit heaped on her this episode, with the "pizza house" phone calls and don calling her jealous and messing up the tag line with cool whip... the writers just did not want to let her win.

and they are pushing the dramatic parallels thing so hard this season. i like it, but it's starting to feel overdone.
alexis bledel is really pretty, huh.
expect we'll be seeing trudy pretty soon, probably at the office.

Context is everything, of course, but her face has a very 50s/60s quality about it that I'd never realized before.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 7 May 2012 09:27 (twelve years ago) link
also, don puts the needle down near the opening of the side but the song is at the end of the side!
i suspect this will become a major plot point.
― flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Monday, 7 May 2012 09:27 (twelve years ago) link
apparently bledel is actually 30 years old but no way does she look it.
― flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Monday, 7 May 2012 09:28 (twelve years ago) link
"i suspect this will become a major plot point."
Unlike Lost where that crazy version of RAW POWER where "Search & Destroy" is IN THE MIDDLE OF RECORD and they just never mentioned it again.
― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 May 2012 12:35 (twelve years ago) link
I thought they got this right actually...? when he lifts up the needle it's at the end of the record
― Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 7 May 2012 15:40 (twelve years ago) link
yeah, and i thought he put the needle down more towards the middle/end. maybe i need to rewatch, but megan did make a big point about how don had to play this one particular song.

loved the bit with the elevator
She said, "Start with this one," which the Beatles themselves did, as that was the first song they recorded for Revolver.
― Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Monday, 7 May 2012 15:50 (twelve years ago) link
lol @ Don telling Roger he doesn't want Megan to end up like her mother
― Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 7 May 2012 15:51 (twelve years ago) link
I'm watching this episode pretending Roger is taking acid every time he's off-screen.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 7 May 2012 16:15 (twelve years ago) link
Tomorrow Never Knows was a great closer to this episode, which takes place around october of 1966, so we see the 'early 60's' coming to a close here; basically, along with Roger's acid trip a while back, Megan laying on her back in the acting class, the elevator thing....it feels like shit is about to get weird, as I like to imagine everything did the second 1967 rolled around.
100% love Megan now btw.
― akm, Monday, 7 May 2012 16:36 (twelve years ago) link
The Beatles thing was so cool. Maybe the fading into the other stuff was kinda eh but it's so great that they were looking for something to replace the Beatles, ended up with that 30-year-old song, and then when he finally hears them it's mind-bending sounds from The Future.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 7 May 2012 17:05 (twelve years ago) link
The rain was foreboding enough...then that elevator thing. Totally over the top ominous foreshadowing but awesome.
And moments like Harry coming to the phone booth because Pete opened the door after they made eye contact then arguing over who initiated...that's why I watch Mad Men.
Regarding the Beatles...Don takes the record off halfway and walks out of the room. He's not impressed with the present/future? The music continued for everyone else.
― dan selzer, Monday, 7 May 2012 17:06 (twelve years ago) link
this was awesome, biggest laugh of the episode for me
He's not impressed with the present/future? The music continued for everyone else.
last shot was of Don leaving the room. the music continued over the credits.
― Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 7 May 2012 17:08 (twelve years ago) link
and yeah, clearly turning his back on the new generation. He was raised in the 30s! His biggest dream was indoor plumbing lol
― Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 7 May 2012 17:09 (twelve years ago) link
Well he also didn't take the acid. But I'm impressed that they're keeping him more than a one-dimensional fuddy duddy. He's clearly ambivalent about Megan's acting dream but he also seems to realize the respect it deserves.
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 7 May 2012 17:09 (twelve years ago) link
Makes me think of in the Zappa autobio how he characterized the music industry at the time: old out-of-touch dudes smoking cigars and saying "I don't know what this racket is, but it's what the kids love and it sells"
― Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 7 May 2012 17:10 (twelve years ago) link
my reaction to the use of the Beatles went from incredulity --> lol of course, MONTAGE! pot smoking! okay this is a little obvious --> Don taking off the record = point made, perfect
― Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 7 May 2012 17:10 (twelve years ago) link
yeah, this was great. such a perfect snapshot of guilty paranoia, trying so hard to seem "normal" that everything goes weird.

joan's dismissal of megan was awesome too.

I think Joan is mostly otm about Megan and Don. I like the friendship that she has built up with Peggy this season.
― Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Monday, 7 May 2012 17:27 (twelve years ago) link
they have an interesting dynamic going on - Joan seems to acknowledge their natural affinity for one another, but otherwise the friendship seems driven by Peggy's need for advice/to spout off. Joan never comes to her about anything. She mentioned her (ex)husband only in passing for ex.
― Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 7 May 2012 17:29 (twelve years ago) link
Also the anecdote from "Easy Riders..." about studio execs in '67 wanting to "make movies about nothing, like that Blow-Up picture."
Which reminds me of Don being an Artfilm buff back in the early days (bonding with Bobbie Barrett over Hiroshima mon amour).

One of my favorite parts of the episode was how many times the satellite photos of the Earth were mentioned. Can you imagine what it must have been like to see the planet as it really is for the first time? Maybe even more revelatory than the moon landing.

also this episode encouraged me to listen to revolver again after umpteen months/years (!). it's great, but i still usually have to skip over taxman.
