iirc 'jon' stewart interviewed extensively for and really wanted the show they gave to kimmel, so maybe hes into the 1130 spot but not 1230

interviewed by oprah on 1 of her own network shows, worth finding imo

So who is going to take over for Dave? Ferguson??

They should replace him with Leno.

Anyway, to answer ss's question, I'm going with Tom Green.

I'm really going to miss him, he's been on since I can remember. Can't fathom who could possibly replace him. I love Ferguson, but he wouldn't work at the earlier time slot.

ferguson is the only talk show i really catch any of w/ any regularity and he would be an interesting contrast w/ the jimmys though so much of what works about his show is due to it being the late show. i did watch some of last night's letterman w/ bill murray hijacking the monologue. several years back word was jon stewart was the heir apparent and supposedly getting to pick his successor was part of the deal when he was flirting w/ jumping to abc a few years back but i can't imagine there's any way jon stewart leaves the little kingdom he's built. i know he's phoned it in for quite awhile now but he was still the best at 11:30. the interview baldwin did w/ him on his podcast a couple of years back it seemed like he'd finally achieved some measure of peace or maturity, the show was finally just a job and he seemed more focused on his family. guy's impact and influence on comedy in this country can't be overstated.
― balls, Thursday, 3 April 2014 21:12 (ten years ago) link
i like ferguson well enough, but he seems more a curiosity than an 11:30 competitor. if he really has a right of first refusal clause i don't see cbs not buying him out.
― Clay, Thursday, 3 April 2014 21:13 (ten years ago) link
get this guy imo

OMG, I would love to see Sarah Palin host a network Tonight Show-styled variety show! At least I would for the three days she lasted. Where do I sign!?

OTMFM. His 80s shows were total game-changers.

i know he's phoned it in for quite awhile now but he was still the best at 11:30.
I haven't watched a whole show since the Clinton administration but in those first couple years after Leno took over from Carson Letterman was a balm.
― Bryan Fairy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 3 April 2014 23:48 (ten years ago) link
same with me (haven't watched a full show in years). but letterman's brand of humor will make him cool forever. especially compared to unfunny jay leno.
― Daniel, Esq 2, Thursday, 3 April 2014 23:51 (ten years ago) link
i don know how i feel about this prediction these days but the timing is kind of perfect
so Conan on Dave the other night leaves me thinking they are doing a little prepro on a dave leaving the CBS 11:30 slot/conan taking over move. some super quick research shows they have both recently renewed their contracts through April 2014. its just a hunch but it feels like a strong one.

i mean it would be kind of perfect for Conan, right? Also by then Dave will be the longest running late night talk show host
― fine with 49 (sunny successor), Wednesday, May 23, 2012 2:07 PM (1 year ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink
dave is losing to leno/fallon repeats at the mo so i guess CBS is used to it and maybe looking long term to when leno finally gives it up and fallon or some other non-comp take the tonight show and everybody is all tonight what?

ugh, that stings. mostly cuz jay leno hasn't been funny, but has been contemptible, for maybe 20 years.
― Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 4 April 2014 01:15 (ten years ago) link
Can't see ferguson getting it, of people who have shows now I can fathom wanting Dave's spot more than the sweet niche they got, the only one is handler
― da croupier, Friday, 4 April 2014 01:18 (ten years ago) link
Older than the Jimmys but edgier and also female, she wouldn't be a bad choice for counter programming.
― da croupier, Friday, 4 April 2014 01:20 (ten years ago) link
Lol wait kimmel's older, I forget thanks to his facelifts
― da croupier, Friday, 4 April 2014 01:22 (ten years ago) link
wait, wouldn't conan o'brien jump at this chance, and escape the ghetto of late-night basic cable?
― Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 4 April 2014 01:22 (ten years ago) link
ppl always say leno 'used to be funny' but i'm not sure anyone ever found any evidence of that.

Ha ok Conan too but why on earth would he get another chance
― da croupier, Friday, 4 April 2014 02:24 (ten years ago) link
why not? he's got a following, he was a critical success when he hosted the tonight show, it would be a good "changing-of-the-guard" story to have him and fallon competing where letterman and leno once did, also he seems like a good guy who got a raw deal so ...
― Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 4 April 2014 02:33 (ten years ago) link
uh because he had underwhelming ratings on the tonight show and has since proven underwhelming on tbs?
― da croupier, Friday, 4 April 2014 02:34 (ten years ago) link
hm. can't imagine what "underwhelming on tbs" is like. audience of 740?
― Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 4 April 2014 02:35 (ten years ago) link
rating-wise if they wanted to steal something from tbs they'd probably be better off with family guy re-runs
― da croupier, Friday, 4 April 2014 02:35 (ten years ago) link
i'm not especially loyal to o'brien (i do think he's funny; i did sympathize with him tremendously over the jay leno situation), but were the ratings woes mostly due to o'brien or to the shrinking audience generally?
― Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 4 April 2014 02:37 (ten years ago) link
conan's stuck where he is. CBS isn't gonna poach from cable to get someone who, justified or not, had an air of compromise and failure as he left his last broadcast spot. Also they presumably would want someone younger?
― Clay, Friday, 4 April 2014 02:38 (ten years ago) link
well, that can't be fergueson, then.
― Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 4 April 2014 02:38 (ten years ago) link
way i figure it -
first tier - a comedy central hotshot who'd see this as a promotion worth giving up edge and security for (they allegedly offered john oliver 12:30, which doesn't suggest much for ferguson unless they were planning on making it a night of UK charm, but oliver thought hbo was a better fit)
second tier - handler or a daytime veteran (degeners, carey) if they want to keep CBS scanning familiar but less fratty than the Jimmys
third tier - someone really left field and untested but attention-getting like Louis CK or Neil Patrick Harris
fourth tier - ferguson or conan, where you're not even pretending you're gonna compete with the Jimmys
― da croupier, Friday, 4 April 2014 02:41 (ten years ago) link
no love for jon stewart, eh?
― Daniel, Esq 2, Friday, 4 April 2014 02:42 (ten years ago) link
or was that yr "first-tier" guy?
yeah i'd call him a comedy central hotshot

ellen probably owns her show and is set where she is. can't imagine louis ck giving up his the freedom and control he has and nph (which was the first suggestion i've seen that made me go 'that could be very interesting') just ditched a ball and chain, i'd have to figure he'd want to do some more broadway and maybe finally pursue some non-smurf movies before he'd commit himself to a talk show.
― balls, Friday, 4 April 2014 02:52 (ten years ago) link
yeah if i had to put my money on someone getting an offer it'd be nph, he's a good idea, but it doesn't seem like his thing so much?
wonder if letterman will be allowed any input
