You guys are all awesome; these nominations are all exciting; everybody voting should definitely be making an effort to watch some stuff, especially shorts, since they're short after all!

Enter Life (Faith Hubley, 1981) - just watched this, and it is totally rad. Will almost certainly make my ballot.

Ineligible: any episodic content whatsoever, including TV series (Adventure Time), OVA (FLCL), web series (Homestar Runner), or individual episodes of same. (Maybe we'll poll this in Animated Creatures II.)

I haven't seen all of it yet, and I'm not sure if it'll make my ballot, but I want to nominate:
The Adventures of Mark Twain (Will Vinton, 1985)
Purely on the basis of this insanely terrifying scene.

no betty boop noms yet, or felix the cat. i love both but i don't know what's considered their best work. i love them in aggregate.

Couple of things which I'll nominate as I think they're significant even if I probably won't vote for theM.
Irresistible Attack By Jeff Keen. This is more as a torch bearer for his work, as much of it's equally mind blowing.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9foXj5jZCww

The Wizard of Speed and Time (Mike Jittlov, 1979)

Great stop-motion work, terrible song. Only 3 minutes, worth checking out -- used to be (probably still is) a comics/sf/fantasy con staple.

What are you talking about with your 'crap song', there, WmC? That's a great song.
― emil.y, Friday, 25 May 2012 16:52 (twelve years ago) link
the Jittlov short was everpresent in convention movie rooms in the early 80s -- I remember one Atlanta Fantasy Fair where they were pretty much showing it between every feature, since it was so short. Favorite bit -- the film clapper animated as a little bitey yappy dog.
I haven't seen the 1989 feature based on the short.
xp -- I just don't like the song, ehh.

Reading a little more about Csaba Varga, apparently he did quite a few shorts featuring Augusta, the character in "Luncheon." The only other one I've seen is "Augusta Feeds Her Child," which is hysterically funny.

I'm gonna have to have a nice, long think about this, but since I didn't see it, I'll throw this one out off the top of my head:

Bad Luck Blackie 1949 - maybe my all-time favorite. Later period, but it's the best distillation of all of Avery's signatures rolled into one really simple, really funny cartoon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVRluE1ZMbY
Hamateur Night 1938 - really silly but I still love it. Lots of great Blanc voices too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-7CkuKmz_A
Who Killed Who 1943 - great parody of Whodunitshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlgHalJ1-p4
Sh-h-h-h 1955 - Tex's last directing effort. The soundtrack is really surreal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9w0QoQX48kw

oops, I laid that out badly but those 4 above are all Tex Avery joints that I'd like to rep for.

Not aimed at anyone in particular, and not mad if everyone prefers doing it the other way, but would it be possible to people to consider linkifying the youtubes instead of putting them up so they embed? Even with a fairly new laptop it still adds a bunch of load-time.

Yeah, yeah. Sorry, didn't see that's where we were headed when I posted mine. That's quite a good idea because this could become a browser killer in pretty short order.
