maybe Don will quit the advertising business altogether and give acting a shot, so he can work with Megan again

maybe they will all travel through time to an alternate universe in an episode called Mad Men in Black 3

If jealousy and contempt are emotions, he's very emotional about Megan.

Actually Don and Peggy in direct competition with one another would probably be a lot of fun as a plotline, especially if Peggy gets a couple of wins over him.

my manager (lol) had a good point about peggy leaving: the network politics of this season were about cutting characters and reducing the size of the show (adios kinsey). are we really going to have a whole other office in the next season?

Given they've kept Betty going for two seasons after she stopped having any real plot function they can keep Peggy around in some way as well.

There was a third season episode involving Don getting drugged and mugged by some kids in a motel room that was told in a funny order.

AMC made Weiner scale down the cast once (two seasons ago) and then wanted him to do it again before this season during all the contract talks. He said no, and won.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 14:27 (twelve years ago) link
well that doesn't really bode well for the idea of expanding the cast then does it
― goole, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 14:29 (twelve years ago) link
They don't have to expand the cast, they just have to show Peggy and the other guy up against Don every so often.

I hope we get to see Mother Francis again this season, particularly with Sally.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 14:53 (twelve years ago) link
Don't think Peggy's going away from the show anytime soon - iirc both Jon Hamm and Matthew Weiner have said things recently along the lines of, that there's a reason that the show starts on her very first day of work.
I don't know if that's just misdirection, but in those instances they seem to acknowledge that Peggy is the closest to an audience proxy, so I just don't think they're going to let go of her that quickly.
― Roz, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 18:57 (twelve years ago) link
Also, while Don may treat Peggy like crap in the office, she's also his new Anna - she'll prob be the first person he turns to if things go seriously wrong with Megan.
― Roz, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 18:58 (twelve years ago) link
someone on twitter posted an interview with christina hendricks, and she said matt weiner had this joan plotline in mind since a season or two ago. maybe that's meant to be comforting, in a "he has a plan, don't worry, this is going somewhere" way, but i still find it difficult to accept that roger wouldn't talk to joan about it beforehand, and that joan would reject roger's money but go through with this.
― producer / dj / humanitarian (reddening), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 20:04 (twelve years ago) link
I think the way Roger has treated Jane this season has made it clear that his money comes with a lot of strings attached. Joan is never going to have to deal with Jaguar guy again -- it makes sense to me.

^^^ This. I mean, Don was on top of his game before he went into that room with Peggy and he looked genuinely crushed at the end of it. Especially when he realised here she was going.

i am a bit surprised that post-acid, "life-altering experience" roger would so blithely let this pass. though blithe is admittedly what roger does best...
― spextor vs bextor (contenderizer), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 20:20 (twelve years ago) link
Remember, Pete phrased this all to them as if Joan had already agreed but that they couldn't afford her. Joan was trying to tell Pete she had no price (until Pete went back to HER as if they'd all voted that she had to do it - did not say 'you can say no' as Bert wanted clear.)
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 20:22 (twelve years ago) link
So from the perspective, Roger thought Joan was up for sleeping with this guy and then just said the "leave me out of it" or whatever.
still, if i were a friend of joan's, i'd want a word with here, regardless of how some weaselly little nerd described the situation to me. roger hardly seems to be pete's biggest fan, after all.
― spextor vs bextor (contenderizer), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 20:25 (twelve years ago) link
here = her
one of the problems with standard soap opera plotting is that it so often requires that everyone unquestioningly accept things said by the least credible people. mad men is usually smarter about avoiding that device.

That scene was a really, really tough scene to film. They didn’t tell me they were going to do this but Phil told Jon to hold on to my hand and not let it go. And then he did and I really sort of lost it… and I will say that every single one of those tears was actually absolutely real.— Elisabeth Moss, Inside Episode 511

i still find it difficult to accept that roger wouldn't talk to joan about it beforehand...
We know that Lane and Roger already objectify Joan, as affectionate as they may be toward her. We can assume that Bert doesn't care enough about Joan to say no. The darkest part is, knowing Pete, that he'd in his own way enjoy prostituting the female staff, and especially a woman more respected than himself.
...and that joan would reject roger's money but go through with this
It's different. This situation has Pete manipulating Joan into thinking that 'whore' is in her job description, and that all the partners think so. (And they do, except Don.) Even though they say "she has a choice" and "she can still say no", the fact that any of the partners would even consider the idea, in the first place, it has effectively redefined her occupation.
The fact that Roger and Joan were in a relationship-- that is, boss with secretary-- only re-enforces the fact, despite his affection for her, he still thinks of her as an object.

during the close up of peggy where don was holding her hand, i remember wondering why it was going on for so long. like, "what is he doing down there...?"
this is obvious, but since i don't think anyone's mentioned it... i keep thinking back to the first episode of the season where joan was practically falling apart at the idea that she'd been replaced at scdp and could be so dispensable. and after all that, what finally institutionalizes her is her body and her looks.
