Oh god yeah the todo list combined with the outlook calendar and reminders is my effing BRAIN at work.

Pureed Moods (Trayce), Thursday, 31 May 2012 12:17 (eleven years ago) link

SO easy to just click in the little task line "check blah blah for update", hit enter, add a "9am tomorrow" reminder.

Mark, the key is:

/he uses open windows as his primary/only running to-do list./

Versus your:
I do have a to-do list on paper, too, which has 20 times as many things that need doing

One of the girls at work is planning her birthday party, and is inviting (mostly?) everyone from work and people who used to work there. I don't want to go to this. Especially if she is charging money for this and the only people I know are going to be people who are always fighting with each other.

tokyo rosemary, Thursday, 31 May 2012 23:12 (eleven years ago) link

Oh, and she asked if had heels, because we are all going to have to dress up and wear them.

tokyo rosemary, Thursday, 31 May 2012 23:22 (eleven years ago) link

"That is so sweet of you to invite me! Thank you! But unfortunately I already have plans*. I hope you have a great time!"

*She needn't know these plans involve sitting at home watching TV and not dressing up and wearing heels.

carl agatha, Friday, 1 June 2012 00:06 (eleven years ago) link

Or maybe I will get lucky and have to work that night.

tokyo rosemary, Friday, 1 June 2012 00:15 (eleven years ago) link

Even better! Then it's ironclad and you don't run the risk of, "Oh! What are you up to???"

carl agatha, Friday, 1 June 2012 00:15 (eleven years ago) link

I would rather pull out my fingernails with pliers than have to go to some girlie night - with WORKMATES - that involved having to wear heels.

"oh yeah, I don't read any emails that I'm cc'd into. Actually they all go into a folder which I then empty on a regular basis. If people want me to read things they should put me in the To line"

-three cheers for my awesome manager, taking my colleague to task over a fat joke she made about our mayor on twitter (we are all on twitter, as friends)

Oh and one IE window bc I have to monitor a second email account that isn't connected to my Outlook.

Pita Malört (Je55e), Friday, 1 June 2012 13:44 (eleven years ago) link

I have an Excel file that I keep pinned in my last 25 items, which has a checklist of what I do on a daily/weekly/monthly basis with 4 columns for each month as well as a notes column and a few "last minute request" rows. I recommend!

Finefinemusic, i hope you don't live in Toronto!

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 1 June 2012 13:50 (eleven years ago) link

I sure do. :(

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 1 June 2012 14:15 (eleven years ago) link

then who cares? dude sort of brought it upon himself with that idiotic fat challenge (i mean, i'd agree *somewhat* otherwise, aside from the fact that it sounds like this is her private twitter feed and not related to work and therefore not really yr manager business if she's not talking about work)

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 1 June 2012 14:34 (eleven years ago) link

Well, I'm a fat girl so it sucks to see fat jokes by friends and colleagues all over my twitter feed first thing :P The girl in question is one of those particularly skinny Asians who eat whatever they want - and she then condemned the mayor for doing the same. Not a big deal, but it sucked a bit and seeing my manager (who this colleague added on purpose, knowing she's outspoken) defend the fatties was nice. Same colleague has an even more private account which she ALSO added us on and which we usually just ignore because it's full of hatred. :P

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 1 June 2012 14:57 (eleven years ago) link

(My manager is about 35, me 29, other colleague 30, and the manager is not HER manager, just mine.. so it's generally a friendly situation.)

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 1 June 2012 14:57 (eleven years ago) link

and all THREE of us went out for cheeseburgers yesterday! Thanks, Grid's Burger Week!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 1 June 2012 14:58 (eleven years ago) link

ah - fair enough.
i remember durring the election some of my friends were throwing in bringing his weight into various tweets and posts etc about him. i got a few of them to knock it off, by pointing out there were (are) *so* *many* more relevant things they could be talking about and even mentioning his weight undermined their point.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 1 June 2012 15:14 (eleven years ago) link

like, we get it - he's a drunk driving liar with an awful record at city hall. you throw "fat" in there and that's all a lot of people will see.
it was a shame he started that whole weigh challenge idiocy (iirc as a distraction to his senseless portlands meddling) - because it gave the weight-mocking a sliver of legitimacy.

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 1 June 2012 15:18 (eleven years ago) link

anyways, we should probably stick to talking about his Fordness on the Toronto thread... back to mocking coworkers!

Porto for Pyros (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 1 June 2012 15:19 (eleven years ago) link

Hah! Fair enough. But yeah the annoyance is fat shaming coming from a person who's never had to worry about being fat, and SO MANY LEGITIMATE COMPLAINTS to choose from about him. Sorry, coworker thread!

I manage X. X is applying for my job (I'm leaving soon). It's an internal position and he's drafting his application during working hours. His work buddy just called him out on it and I overheard X tell his buddy that it's fine because it's an internal position.

I say it isn't, but haven't said so yet and am now (not-I)A at X and IA at myself.

ljubljana, Thursday, 7 June 2012 03:51 (eleven years ago) link

er, isn't fine, I mean. It *is* an internal position... and he should be able to write a strong application.

ljubljana, Thursday, 7 June 2012 03:52 (eleven years ago) link

So I inherited some work from someone who was making a big song and dance about not having time to even think about it, except now she's babysitting the easy parts of said work in tedious detail, so instead of me taking 5 minutes to fill in the self-explanatory admin spreadsheet, I've spent half an hour listening to her ask me what goes in every column and then (after I've already told her the right value) explaining what the column is for again, while I end up telling her what I was going to put in there about 5 times before she puts it in

now she's insisting on going through emails to check all the dates I'm offering, all the while saying "of course the exact dates don't really matter, it's just to get some rough information" - oh, but apparently less "rough" than the ones I've already looked up from the emails?

instant coffee happening between us (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 8 June 2012 09:44 (eleven years ago) link

Getting the 30 minute tutorial to complete the 5 minute task is exhausting. And actually, it sucks from the other side, too, when you just need someone to do something quickly for you and they end up requiring handholding the entire time.

Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Friday, 8 June 2012 12:19 (eleven years ago) link

I have already had the tutorial at least twice and have already filled in the form unattended previously! And I don't need hand-holding, though it may be my fault for radiating such an aura of incompetence that everyone thinks I must. I mean I do have that aura BUT this lady is a super control-freak too, and not just with me.

And I didn't even tell her that the new set of work for that project had come in, she was just... watching everyone else's tickets on our new ticketing system, even though she never picks up any tickets herself.

I do hate being given work which was originally hers, though, as she's guaranteed to complain that it wasn't done right and nobody else does things properly, etc - again, not just with me, though I do feel like I get the brunt of it because I happen to have the skillset to be given most of the tasks she makes a fuss about

(plus she totally looooved the last guy who picked up any of her work, even though he was also slapdash and impunctual which she is always snarky at me for, because he was 1. male 2. goodlooking 3. a lot more patient about nodding and agreeing that her way was the best about everything)

tehresa, Sunday, 10 June 2012 14:28 (eleven years ago) link

Me too. I've said that before here. Someone told me to start a 77 co-workers bitching thread, but I don't want to siphon off any business from this thread.

Well, I'm a fat girl

you are? nah

It's an internal position and he's drafting his application during working hours.

i think this is fine, unless he's blowing off work required by his current position in the meantime?

mookieproof, Monday, 11 June 2012 00:34 (eleven years ago) link

If it were a job with a clearly defined set of tasks that you can 'get done' for a period then I'd agree, but we generate our own work. If we have time left in the day over and above current projects, we need to spend it scoping for the next project - something it's always hard to find time to do, but very necessary for our long-term viability (even medium-term viability...)

Mike Arnold, the owner of the printing company I used to work for! What a choad. Refused a plea agreement for 18 months (for fraud), went to trial and got 10 years. LOL

I have to go to a going away party this afternoon. I hate socializing with these people. ugh.

wolf kabob (ENBB), Monday, 11 June 2012 14:27 (eleven years ago) link

Birthday party girl gave her 2 week notice. So if she does do this party, I don't have to deal with all the drama that will result in me saying no.

tokyo rosemary, Monday, 11 June 2012 17:39 (eleven years ago) link

I am one of two attorneys that work in this office. We are both in our late 30s, yet people refer to us as "the girls," as in "The girls gave me the message so I didn't listen to my voicemail" or "Did you ask the girls (the complicated legal question requiring specialized knowledge and excellent research skills)?"

This is normally the kind of thing I pipe up about (I notoriously told an old doddering coworker not to call me "hon" and caught shit about it from all quarters because he's old and he doesn't mean anything by it) but the admin, who is my friend and whom I adore, does it all the time and she means it as an endearment and I don't have it in me to explain that by calling us "the girls" it reinforces our status as female helpmeets for my boss, who has very sexist ideas about women's roles in the workplace (basically anyone with boobs was placed at work to serve his whims, regardless of their education, experience, or areas of expertise).

carl agatha, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:23 (eleven years ago) link

(I notoriously told an old doddering coworker not to call me "hon" and caught shit about it from all quarters because he's old and he doesn't mean anything by it)

The latter was the excuse made for him by everybody else. Personally, I have enough respect for old people to assume they can handle complex concepts like, "This person would prefer I call her by name" rather than smiling and letting them get away with being assholes.

carl agatha, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:25 (eleven years ago) link

I have a co-worker who also refers to women as "hon" or "sweety". He also refers to me and other youngish co-workers/contractors as "my little buddy". English isn't his first language, and although he generally does fine he often throws slang in somewhat awkwardly, and I think his Sweety's and My Little Buddy's kind of fall into the same category as when he very forcefully throws an "Ain't" into a sentence.

I honestly don't think he means anything negative by it, or realizes it's derogatory, but it can create very uncomfortable situations.

Mad God 40/40 (Z S), Monday, 11 June 2012 19:33 (eleven years ago) link

The GM at a restaurant I used to work at took to calling me "Queen Bee" for a while.

"Sweety" and "Hon" et al. seem so outdated to me that I can't believe people still call their colleagues those things. But I'm pretty sheltered. Though my female boss and my male superior (not quite a boss) do occasionally refer to annoying opposing attorneys or opposing parties as "broad" or "bimbo." (Not exactly an excuse, but they do it tongue-in-cheek b/c they are employment lawyers who do a lot of plaintiff side sexual harassment work.)

Je55e, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:53 (eleven years ago) link

Part of what rankles me is that I work in a male-dominated area of law that is dominated by condescending fucks so anything that diminishes me professionally is unacceptable to me.

(Somewhat related: http://www.forbes.com/sites/meghancasserly/2012/06/07/are-housewives-to-blame-for-the-plight-of-working-women/ except how the hell is this a SAH wife/mother's fault and not the fault of the asshole who thinks women should get out of the office and back in the kitchen, I have no freaking clue.)

carl agatha, Monday, 11 June 2012 20:00 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I wish articles like that could stick with the relationships and ditch the eagerness to assign blame.

ljubljana, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 00:59 (eleven years ago) link

I get the rhetorical use of "blame," but it's really a poor choice for that story or any story where you're actually talking about literal responsibility for something.

Je55e, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 01:37 (eleven years ago) link

there was a dude at my last job who always called me "kid" (i'm 31). i thought it was demeaning at first, but i came to learn that it was totally in character - he was this super-gruff mid-50's new hampshire guy with a bushy mustache who wore short sleeved shirts with ties*, and by the end of working at that shithole, he had become one of my favorite people to work with.

*he was the only one who ever wore a tie - even the CEO wore jeans and polo shirts most days.
