Such a great camera shot of Nicklaus in line with Tiger on the green. Loved when he walked over and Nicklaus replayed the shot at 16 for him; big Tiger grin + "How 'bout that?"

clemenza, Sunday, 3 June 2012 21:40 (twelve years ago) link

oh man, rory really gave that a chance. lands that 12 inches shorter and there's some real drama

I know Tiger's playing well right now, and he'll probably win today, but I laughed when I read Michael Bamberger on cnnsi.com this morning:

"On Sunday, make sure to set your clocks ahead an hour and your time machine back a decade or more. Tiger Woods looks primed for a monster year.

In January, he won at Torrey Pines for the 75th time as a pro. On Sunday, he'll win at Doral for the fourth time. Next month at Augusta, he'll win the Masters for the fifth time. Who's going to beat him?"

He does go on to qualify that in the next paragraph, but still. I think it's the same guy who wrote something equally silly going into last year's Masters. Winning majors is really hard!

clemenza, Sunday, 10 March 2013 21:49 (eleven years ago) link

yeah that's insane, you can't predict golf with any certainty.

Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Sunday, 10 March 2013 22:13 (eleven years ago) link

bet you a million rory wont win it

darrrrggghhh daylight savings (darraghmac), Sunday, 10 March 2013 22:22 (eleven years ago) link

The thing is, Tiger's now on the other side of a psychological divide that he used to work to his advantage. Ten years ago, it didn't much matter how well anyone else was playing going into a major, because winning majors is different. Now--until he manages to win another one--it doesn't much matter how well Tiger is playing going into a major, because winning majors is different.

clemenza, Sunday, 10 March 2013 23:11 (eleven years ago) link

he really tried to make it interesting on 18 huh

"During a crush of photographers as the awards podium at the World Cup event in Italy, a media member with a shoulder-mounted video camera pushed and surged toward the stage, turned and hit Tiger Woods in the mouth," Mark Steinberg of Excel Sports said in an email. "Woods' tooth was knocked out by the incident."

Tiger Woods on his future in golf: 'There’s nothing I can look forward to'

The most bleak prognosis yet regarding a return to competitive golf for Tiger Woods has arrived from the man himself.

Woods is currently in the midst of recovery from a third operation on the same area of his back, with the 39-year-old admitting on Tuesday he has no idea if or when he will play again. Serious doubts have to remain over Woods’s career continuing at all, especially given his previously upbeat sentiment.

When asked about a timescale for any return, Woods replied: “I have no answer for that. Neither does my surgeon or my physio. There is no timetable.

“That’s the hardest part for me. There is nothing I can look forward to, nothing I can build towards. Where is the light at the end of the tunnel? I don’t know.”

Woods also admitted the extent to which he can exercise, which hasn’t included any golf activity at all. “I walk,” said the 14-time major winner. “And I walk and I walk some more.

“I am really good at playing video games. Really good. I swear, that’s basically how I pass a lot of my time.

“I have to reset the clock every day and say, ‘Here we go, this is a new day. Lets take it for what it is.’ I listen to my surgeon, I listen to my physios and we just take it day by day. Hopefully the day by day adds up to something positive here, soon.”

Woods underwent the three surgeries within just 19 months, the most recent of which was in late October. The worst season of his professional career culminated at the Wyndham Championship in August.

Woods is spending this week in the Bahamas, where his foundation is the tournament host of the Hero World Challenge. He has already been named as a vice-captain of the United States Ryder Cup team for the meeting with Europe at Hazeltine next September.

“I’ve had a pretty good career for my 20s and 30s,” he said.

“For my 20 years out here, I think I’ve achieved a lot, and if that’s all it entails, then I’ve had a pretty good run. But I’m hoping that’s not it. I’m hoping that I can get back out here and compete against these guys. I really do miss it.”
