Hello!

Don't worry, I am not easily frightened. Did you get my email? If it's ok with you I'll bring a couple of Clarion West buddies, they can drive me and can therefore provide backup and /or an escape vehicle should it turn out there is reason for fear! ;)

I've been in Seattle a week and a half now but hardly managed to venture out of the sorority house we're living in. We have classes here and then we write, critique, write some more... decompression basically involves yacking at each other about narrative arcs, or gender & identity in online gaming, or Paris Hilton, y'know. It turns out SF writers are just people. They are keeping us damn busy though.

I'm liking the changeable weather, it's a lot like home only warmer on the wet days. There seems to be a good selection of restaurants around the university district, we've had a couple of lunches out. Generally though, they feed us, and that is very nice.

I've ventured outside the U district four times; once for the Locus Awards at the Marriott Courtyard, once for Nancy Kress (who tutored us our first week) reading at the SFM, once to go look round the SFM itself, which was kinda pricy for what you get but gave me a story idea I'm writing up at the moment. Finding out where to catch the bus back here took longer than going round the museum but it's all good. Action. Adventure. Last Friday we went to a party in a posh house on 10th. I don't feel like I've even scratched the surface of Seattle yet.

Zora, Friday, 29 June 2007 07:13 (seventeen years ago) link

OMG NANCY KRESS!!!!! </fangirl>

If you get a chance to eat at Thai Tom, really you should. It's just up the street from Twice-Sold Tales (which is just up the street from the University Bookstore).

Yay Saturday! C'mon Friday, be OVER!

Jaq, Friday, 29 June 2007 14:30 (seventeen years ago) link

hahahaha was that croquet party invitation an ILX meetup? I had no idea who it was from!! Sense is being made now. I work on Saturdays though, so attempt to have fun without me.

musically, Saturday, 30 June 2007 06:53 (seventeen years ago) link

hihi

jergïns, Saturday, 30 June 2007 07:08 (seventeen years ago) link

party will go late. come after work.

lxy, Saturday, 30 June 2007 07:14 (seventeen years ago) link

now that's a Seattle yard

gabbneb, Saturday, 30 June 2007 15:01 (seventeen years ago) link

It makes a wicked croquet course, esp. the front yard which not only has a steep slope to the street, it's on an even steeper street which leads straight down to Green Lake :)

I am all cooked out I think. Spicy eggplant/mushroom/bean dip, not spicy bean dip, midwest tabbouli, double batch of brownies. Mr. Jaq grilled up a couple dozen brats. Hopefully enough fuel to keep us going into the wee dancing hours.

Jaq, Saturday, 30 June 2007 22:02 (seventeen years ago) link

lxy and jergins, you guys are the best! Thanks for yet another great time, and if you need help cleaning up today, call me and I will be there.

One fave moment: K in the kitchen, mourning "The Mt. Gay is GONE!" Also, that astounding croquet shot by Dave from Zora's posse; the man was in total command!

Jaq, Sunday, 1 July 2007 17:03 (seventeen years ago) link

ps. this thread title should be changed to Seattle! How is it now? Are there parties? Should I FAP there?

Jaq, Sunday, 1 July 2007 17:12 (seventeen years ago) link

you guys, that was awesome! Thanks again for having us (and providing my first croquet experience).

Morley Timmons, Sunday, 1 July 2007 18:18 (seventeen years ago) link

thanks for coming over, you guys. it WAS really fun. and the house isn't in too bad of shape. you know what i loved? that there were so many ilxors here and you all were the ones that danced, played, hung out, chatted it up. my irl friends didn't really keep up. the ilxor constitution is a hearty one.

jergïns, Sunday, 1 July 2007 19:30 (seventeen years ago) link

i forgot that socializing with large groups of people can be fun. A+ would go again

What did I miss after I left?

Also, nice meeting everyone I hadn't met yet.

Lingbert, Sunday, 1 July 2007 19:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Great party, many thanks, but..........

Everyone except for me & J1ll are MAD RONG for not wearing ugly golf shorts! (Although at least a couple people insisted my golf shorts weren't ugly enough, but harrumph to that.)

The Reverend, Sunday, 1 July 2007 20:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Who is lxy? Did I meet you?

The Reverend, Sunday, 1 July 2007 20:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Jergins, did I hear a song during your set about "going down on a girl who looks like me," or was I just drunk?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Sunday, 1 July 2007 23:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Thanks, by the way. We need to get everyone together on Capitol Hill soon.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Sunday, 1 July 2007 23:25 (seventeen years ago) link

both drunk and yes, that was r kelly: "I always wanted to go down on a girl who reminds me of me."

capitol hill, yes.

lxy was our hostess, in the red check shirt and black shorts.

thanks for coming, everybody! next time i actually need to play some croquet.

jergïns, Monday, 2 July 2007 01:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, alright! Lxy and Jergins, thank you so much! A toast to them and to our awesome djs!

The Reverend, Monday, 2 July 2007 01:54 (seventeen years ago) link

jergins, better you than me @ the croquet. I rather drink and watch the chaos. Also, RAH Reverend, for the plaid shorts and WINNING the 1st round!

Jaq, Monday, 2 July 2007 03:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Ha! Is that on the new R.? I own it, but often listen to it from the other room, so haven't mastered all the lyrics yet. I loved your set, by the way. Did Brian spin again? I wish I hadn't had to leave.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Monday, 2 July 2007 05:04 (seventeen years ago) link

thanks. yeah, he played for a while longer and our friend josh played, too. at that point i was too drunk to figure out what was going on. i couldn't find my camera or my drink so i passed out. starting early always gets me.

thanks again people we rocked some shit

jergïns, Monday, 2 July 2007 05:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh damn, that song's on that Ludacris album with my current fave "Slap."

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Monday, 2 July 2007 06:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Does anyone have photographic evidence the fete?

The Reverend, Monday, 2 July 2007 20:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I know someone was taking pictures of hot croquet action but I dunno if it was an ILXor.

clotpoll, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Hey guys!

Thanks so much from me and the 'posse'! You made us so welcome. Dave is very pleased to have become famous for his (fluky) croquet shots.

We had a super time, the food was A+, and it was great to drift from conversation to conversation listening to people's music talk. Very sorry to have missed all the dancing.

They're keeping us pretty busy here still, but it would be cool to see you guys again before I go back to Blighty - will email if it looks at all possible.

Thanks again, you guys rock.

Zora, Friday, 6 July 2007 02:52 (seventeen years ago) link

it would be cool to see you guys again before I go back to Blighty - will email if it looks at all possible.

let us know

Lingbert, Saturday, 7 July 2007 04:11 (seventeen years ago) link

and i guess "will email if it looks at all possible." = you will let us know, so yeah

Lingbert, Saturday, 7 July 2007 04:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Only move here if

1) You aren't planning to drive a car
2) You don't mind taking the bus or biking
3) You will move to a spot near your job rather than commuting
4) You aren't one of those idiots who has a gas guzzling SUV. If so, you deserve to die and I don't care whether you have kids or not. GLOBAL WARMING DUMBASSES.

Bimble, Saturday, 7 July 2007 04:47 (seventeen years ago) link

Chill dude, sometimes it's just people heading from California/Oregon up to visit Vancouver BC. But may I add:

5) If, when you do drive, you are extremely deferential to pedestrians and bicyclists
6) If you are wont to drive under the speed limit in the fast or commuter lane on the freeway when you do drive
7) If you think it's charming when your vehicle sprouts moss

I have an interview with Seattle Public Library, but I have to pay my way out there. Pros/cons of living on the Pacific NW versus the East Coast?

Virginia Plain, Saturday, 7 July 2007 14:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Bigger mountains
Pods of orcas
Better local wines
More temperate weather
