Gah, that's bad. Remember when Dave of the shop used to put on Americana nights under the banner The Gilded Palace of Sin. Great evenings.

Will be interesting to see how Resident in the North Laine weathers the storm.

I'm assuming their business will go up in the short term, especially on the ticket sales side of things

Yeah, plus it seems to be a neater and, dare I say it, trendier shop than Rounder. I suspect a lot of Brighton bohos never venture beyond the North Laine to do their shopping and would never be seen dead in the Lanes. I'm sure it will thrive

I haven't been into Rounder for ages tbh, never really seemed to have anything that I was looking for, whereas I consistently spend way too much money in Resident.

Huh, I have the exact opposite experience - Resident never has much that I want that I can't get cheaper at the other shops, whereas Rounder always had me restraining myself from extra purchases. Really bummed about this news. Will attempt to shop extra hard at Endless Records now, don't want that going under, especially not so soon after starting.

emil.y, Monday, 9 July 2012 18:09 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, Resident isn't especially cheap, though they are pretty quick to mark down things that under-perform saleswise. New avant-garde/underground section in there is alright, it is all CD though.

Edgeworld closed recently too btw.

Where is Endless???

it's where Edgeworld used to be

i went there in may and walked around for a rainy day, it was nice

sorry it rained for u s1ocki ;_;

gonna send him to outer space, to hug another face (NickB), Monday, 9 July 2012 18:42 (eleven years ago) link

it's ok, the rain let up and i ate an enhanced cookie and took pictures then hung out in a nice pub owned by a friend of a friend!

a cookie is not a meal! what would your mother say?

gonna send him to outer space, to hug another face (NickB), Monday, 9 July 2012 18:52 (eleven years ago) link

so what is the difference between edgeworld and endless? are they carrying different stuff or is it just a change of owner or what?

gonna send him to outer space, to hug another face (NickB), Monday, 9 July 2012 18:54 (eleven years ago) link

Colin doesn't run it any more, but Tom who was part of the staff at Edgeworld does. The stock is still fairly minimal at the moment but worth a look - my guess is it'll have a relatively similar ethos to the old shop.

emil.y, Monday, 9 July 2012 19:47 (eleven years ago) link

I think one of the people who used to work at Edgeworld is still there but apart from that it's a completely new store with different stock policies and what have you.

xp

I dunno if you're interested in this, Nick, but me and the mister are doing the music quiz at the West Hill on Tuesday. It's shaping up to be pretty good and pretty hard, but considering your music knowledge I think you'd be in with a shot. There's no entry fee, so if you're free...

emil.y, Saturday, 21 July 2012 01:42 (eleven years ago) link

Oh shiit, you are throwing down a gauntlet there. Will see if I can recruit a team.

mod night at the oasis (NickB), Sunday, 22 July 2012 22:50 (eleven years ago) link

But good luck with it anyway btw!

mod night at the oasis (NickB), Sunday, 22 July 2012 22:52 (eleven years ago) link

Quiz tonight!

emil.y, Tuesday, 24 July 2012 17:01 (eleven years ago) link

How did it go?

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 11:30 (eleven years ago) link

I couldn't make this! I swear to do it next time though, so do let us know.

How does this sort of thing work in the age of the smartphone anyhow?

mod night at the oasis (NickB), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 12:03 (eleven years ago) link

Mostly on trust. There were enough teams last night to keep an eye on each other, I think, but I'm pretty sure nobody even tried to use them.

We'll be doing it next month too, and the quiz itself is on every Tuesday, but I'll let you know what the date is when I work it out.

It was pretty fun, we got a lot of blank looks to some of the questions but the top two teams both did really well, and there was a good range of scores.

emil.y, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 14:47 (eleven years ago) link

Oh yeah, I've just noticed on the flyer that it's every week. I could be dreadful at it on a regular basis!

two months pass...

We're still doing the quiz, btw.

But more importantly, HALLOGALLOWEEN is coming:

excellent!

Hah, I was about to contact my friend Joe Outer Church and alert him, but a quick check of Facebook suggests that Brighton is a small town :)

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 20:12 (eleven years ago) link

It is indeed.

Apparently Borderline is closing?

What? Shit! First Rounder and now this....

Hadn't been in there for ages, but feel sad for the old psych-head dudes that work there.

four weeks pass...

Bad news about all the classic record stores closing, although my favourite‘s over the last few years have been One Stop Records and Rarekind.

Good news is after 2 years away, I’m moving back to Brighton next Monday! FAP?

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:36 (eleven years ago) link

And what‘s hot these days?

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:41 (eleven years ago) link

Also, I’m looking for a short-medium term room to let if anyone knows anyone looking and would like to share with a music obsessive and pretty decent cook who doesn’t mind sharing his meals.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 16:43 (eleven years ago) link

w00t!

I’m moving back to Brighton next Monday! FAP?

FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP.

There are some good shows and stuff coming up, too. Sadly the Thurston Moore/Colour Out of Space show sold out in a day so you'll miss out there.

I'll keep an ear out for rooms, not heard of anyone looking recently but it comes up relatively often.

emil.y, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 17:07 (eleven years ago) link

never even heard about the thurston show, could be interesting though my days of being an SY/thurston stan seem like a very long time ago indeed

i am brötzmanning this weekend, so that should up my skronk levels a bit until the winter is thru

impound the alarm (NickB), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 17:23 (eleven years ago) link

but yeah fap fap fap, someone make a plan

impound the alarm (NickB), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 17:24 (eleven years ago) link

I don't think I can afford Brötzmann, although tbh I REALLY want to go. Bah.

The Thurston show is a CooS fundraiser, with quite a few people playing who I may or may not like more than Thurston himself...

emil.y, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 17:25 (eleven years ago) link

I don't think I can afford Brötzmann, although tbh I REALLY want to go. Bah.

should be good - think it kicks off at four or so with some film screening or other, then brötzy is doing his thing after that. don't mind shouting you a few drinks if you want...

impound the alarm (NickB), Wednesday, 9 January 2013 17:32 (eleven years ago) link

Not back until early next week, but do some good Brötzmanning

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 9 January 2013 18:02 (eleven years ago) link

mmil.y, is this music quiz thing still a thing?

qbert yuiop (NickB), Tuesday, 15 January 2013 16:07 (eleven years ago) link

err emil.y not mmil.y

qbert yuiop (NickB), Tuesday, 15 January 2013 16:07 (eleven years ago) link

helloooo brighton

qbert yuiop (NickB), Tuesday, 15 January 2013 17:07 (eleven years ago) link

It is! Back on the 22nd.

How was Brötzmann? Just couldn't eat that £17 entry fee in the end, particularly not after shelling out £25 for Residents tickets.

emil.y, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 17:09 (eleven years ago) link

oh smashing. thanks! :)

brötz was great and the whole film thing before hand was actually really nice - good job put his work into context, him talking about growing up in the shadow of ww2 etc all very humanising (is that a word?). the trio itself was amazing!

qbert yuiop (NickB), Tuesday, 15 January 2013 17:29 (eleven years ago) link

btw is there a thurston moore lookalike in brighton? big tall guy that looked just like him stood watching

qbert yuiop (NickB), Tuesday, 15 January 2013 17:31 (eleven years ago) link

Oh, I think I saw on facebook or twitter that he was there? But then again it could've been a friend making the same mistake... The only TM lookalike I know is Luke from Helm, but he's like a little baby Thurston, it wouldn't have been him.

emil.y, Tuesday, 15 January 2013 17:47 (eleven years ago) link

hmm i wonder... (not luke from helm btw. i've seen him before when he was in birds of delay with steeeve)

just saw that thurston is playing with andy pyne when he does his thing there. that'll be good cos andy is great! also chuffed for him cos he's been a SY fan since way back iirc
