yeah the sheer brutality of some of SA missions was quickly mirrored in the vast satisfaction you got from completing them.

but i guess that's just true of any challenging game.

would like to re-brag about how I one hundred percented this game btw.

PSOD (Ste), Thursday, 12 July 2012 08:37 (eleven years ago) link

Me too!

As regards bits of computer landscape that have embedded themselves into my brain (and caused occasional real-not real confusion), this is second to GTA3, though.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 12 July 2012 08:48 (eleven years ago) link

a buddy of mine and I 100%ed this sucker over a couple years. It is a source of great pride and shame.

Clay, Thursday, 12 July 2012 09:01 (eleven years ago) link

Andrew, same here. What's even more confusing is when you then play Liberty City Stories to death which has a slightly altered map of gta3. Then go back to play gta3. mind fuck.

- My driving experience level tends to go up right when I am crashing into everything around me.
- Started dating Katie, now if I die i keep all my weapons. Nice! I just have to remember not to get busted and I can basically do whatever I want. A shame gang wars aren't active right now.
- Also i installed Hot Coffee, so i can see what that's all about eventually...
- David Cross isn't that annoying, he's kinda funny, in an insufferable prick kinda way. His first mission w the mounted Gatling gun was fun!
- Pimping is the best way right now for me to make a bunch of $$$ quickly.
- No way in hell i am going through driving school.
- No way am I doing those car/bike-in-a-giant-bowl time trials where you have to run through red circles and stuff. I am not a good driver in this game.
- I really love MC Forth Right, have been keeping mostly it at Playback FM and Radio Los Santos. The German DJ on SF-UR is hilarious.
- Being a valet was fun! Plus i now own the hotel! Or something!
- At first I really hated driving between the islands, but I'm getting used to it now. I just wreck a lot of cars.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 13 July 2012 03:40 (eleven years ago) link

- The OTT radio commercials remind me a lot of Robocop, which is a good space for this game to exist.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 13 July 2012 03:42 (eleven years ago) link

- The random plane crashes in this game are insanely entertaining.
- Ended a firefighting mission w my truck laid over a median on the highway, couldn't go anywhere, so i jumped out. Cars started ramming into it, piling up. Pretty soon there were over a dozen. I ran a good distance away, climbed up a hill, and pulled out my rocket launcher. Fireworks!

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 13 July 2012 03:52 (eleven years ago) link

- Driving through the countryside is best on a bike with "Freebird" on the radio.
- The radio sounds different on different vehicles. Motorcycles have less bass.

This is currently on sale on Steam for 7.50. If you hurry, you can grab Saints Row 3 for like $12 too.

The social satire bit went waaaaaay down in GTA4, unfortunately.

- Yes, play "Crazy" while i am driving a burning convertible off the side of a mountain.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:15 (eleven years ago) link

Only time the muscles/fat thing ever required my attention was once i started dating & driving that girl everywhere LOL So i've taken some me time off to run around and shoot things, taking full advantage of the respawning guns. Right now I'm at the country club doing drive-bys in a golf cart.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:49 (eleven years ago) link

OK you can beat people to death with flowers.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 13 July 2012 04:50 (eleven years ago) link

I was driving back to San Fierro and hit a car cos i was going really really fast and fell off a bridge and into the ocean. I jumped out and started swimming, and after checking the map decided to just swim the rest of the way instead of getting back on the road. I noticed a NPC car that had crashed in the water, and it was neat that you could swim all around it. Then I turned around and saw a dolphin! We looked at each other for a minute but I came up for air and lost him. I guess he just went off on whatever swimming patterns he's programmed for.

More than anything this is just an incredibly detailed world. The countryside is beautiful and the lighting when it goes from 3am to dawn is eerily dreamlike. Graphically, this thing is just beautiful, particularly when you hit the nitro and you are going really fast down the road. It looks like a CGI movie in many parts.

There must be so much primitive AI running here, you could probably just let it run and watch all kinds of crazy things going on.

:D

reading yr posts is like rediscovering it for the first time all over again. but i've been playing a lot lately too, trying to get my hundred percent on even tho i am never going to gold out the fucking driving schools.

also i've cheated at the oysters/horseshoes/tags and looked at maps, sorry i'm not that hardcore

I seem to remember you only need bronze for 100%. There were quite a few other things you didn't need for 100% too (unique jumps, girlfriends, beat the cock)

Dust, Friday, 13 July 2012 11:54 (eleven years ago) link

Reading this just reminds me how boring GTA4 was. One thing I REALLY missed was skydiving/basejumping/parachuting.

circa1916, Friday, 13 July 2012 12:07 (eleven years ago) link

The best way to make money is gambling on the horse race machines if I remember rightly. Way better than 100% ROI on those suckahs.

Mark C, Friday, 13 July 2012 12:22 (eleven years ago) link

Oh yeah. Easy way to more cash than you'll ever need.

circa1916, Friday, 13 July 2012 12:38 (eleven years ago) link

I always forget about the gambling sections. There's so much to this game. Think I recall making a lot of money on the poker slot machines.

Did anyone ever become bankrupt with the Mafia casino? They send out random gangs in black cars to come kill you.

gtaIV was pretty, and had an interesting map. not much else unfortunately.

PSOD (Ste), Friday, 13 July 2012 12:50 (eleven years ago) link

i got deep in the hole with the casino and had to use a kinda cheat to get back to solvency cos i couldn't get resprays or eat food or anything else

Is that second shot supposed to be Echo or Macarthur Park?

Also, what are you all playing San Andreas on these days? I miss it but have no gaming machine.

www.gbokchoymail.com (admrl), Friday, 13 July 2012 22:30 (eleven years ago) link

If I'm going to play San Andreas the normal game I'll load it up on my ps2 - as the pc version can't utilise my 360 pad.

but on the PC there is MTA which is an online multiplayer mod for San Andreas, complete with spruced up gfx and does use the 360 or ps3 pads properly. I've been playing it all night tonight in fact.

You can get apps that translate any gamepad to work with a game.

You guys are making me want to play this again. There's no way to get it on Xbox 360, right?

Tried them, obviously I'm stupid but I just couldn't figure out how to use them at all.

Those 2004 posts from me are like the last homebound whimpers from a bachelor stuck in his house, waiting for his fiance and trying not to get depressed about Bush's re-election.

This happens to me too IRL. Hit 'x' in the upper right corner and it's the same thing.

how is/are liberty city stories? i sold my copy of gta4 and sorta, kinda regret it - at this point, the LCS multipack is cheaper than buying all of them together. i guess that's justification enough but there was good reason i sold gta4: it bored the hell out of me.

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 00:52 (eleven years ago) link

After the insane awesomeness of some of the GTA3 orginal music (like "Stripe Summer," "Forever," and "Fade Away," I was sorely disappointed by the same in Liberty City Stories.

i bought a ps2 last year for $40; i had never owned one. best-spent $40 ever. you guys are gonna make me pick up san andreas this week.

a hauntingly unemployed american (difficult listening hour), Tuesday, 17 July 2012 01:19 (eleven years ago) link

say whhaaaat, i got a ps2 last october for $20, plus some games i'd later sell.

essentials:

san andreas
silent hill 2
shadow colossus/ico (unless you own a ps3, wheareas it'd be cheaper to buy the hd collections)
mgs2 & 3
katamari damacy

i still keep my ps2 for sole reason of playing all of the above.

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 03:41 (eleven years ago) link

but i'm just saying, $40 is high. i didn't even feel like i was getting a "deal" with the guy i craiglist'd from - i'd later see one at a yard sale for $10 bucks.

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 03:42 (eleven years ago) link

i bought mine from a store and thus paid a 100% convenience charge but at least i didn't have to interact with anyone

"Stripe Summer" was sung by a girl I know! who made lo-fi 4-track tapes. She was staying at a GTA3 music contributors' house in 200X and sang a few snippets that became that song.
