gah i fucked up #2

what i'm saying is since the 13" mbp and the mba are both missing the geforce they're going to feel pretty similar because the intel graphics are going to limit performance more than the clock speed

see i've reached that point with my santa rosa where i am reading to put in an ssd but at this point the monitor and motherboard are about to die. i have a medium binder clip on the bezel right now, without it the display goes nuts. if i bump the connector for my headphones it causes all sorts of weird and wonderful crashing, etc. another thing i'm wondering is whether ssd prices are going to come down faster than the requirements. like by the time i am going to start needing the ssd, am i going to need a 1tb ssd which is going to cost me $400.

the other complicating factor though is wondering whether to bto a retina w/ 16gb ram. can't imagine what you'd seriously need 16gb of ram for that wouldn't be bottlenecked by the video card.

help

how long until refurb retinas?

the late great, Tuesday, 17 July 2012 23:39 (eleven years ago) link

wish they had autocad on the demo rmbp

i asked if graphed was retina optimized and got a great blank look

the late great, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 01:00 (eleven years ago) link

grapher, duh

the late great, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 01:00 (eleven years ago) link

late great what did you do to your santa rosa?!?!?!

dayo, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 12:31 (eleven years ago) link

heavy daily use and lots of travel?

i think the headphone jack / motherboard issue is common on these, the cracked bezel i'm kind of unclear what happened but it started as a hairline i think and got worse and worse

it is still running though and i'm hoping to set something up with it, not sure what yet. maybe a meteorological station or a seismograph.

the late great, Wednesday, 18 July 2012 12:50 (eleven years ago) link

retina mbp now! text is very very pretty

Euler, Friday, 20 July 2012 23:09 (eleven years ago) link

:-)

yeah i ended up at 1650 for the mbp i picked and 2150 for the rmbp i picked

went in the store and every time i looked at the old mbp i was checking to see if there was shit on my glasses. it wasn't even about "eye popping detail", it just looked so much more natural, the glare issue is improved x 1000, the definition, contrast, clarity, etc etc

btw i noticed almost no speed difference between the base rmbp and base mbp.

i'm going to get the retina, applecare be damned

the late great, Friday, 20 July 2012 23:13 (eleven years ago) link

Just ordered a new air. 13" BTO with 8gigs ram and the 500gig ssd.

Was really tempted by the retina - the difference was something like 50 quid, although the ssd would have been smaller - but given that it would be bigger and not much lighter than my '06 macbook, and lugging this thing around on my shoulder is what tipped me over the edge, that seemed a bit silly.

I think this is the most I've ever spent on anything. Until it turns up I'll be going through a constant mix of excitement and buyer's remorse..

Mountain Lion out tomorrow, as expected.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 24 July 2012 22:27 (eleven years ago) link

ooh I guess that means my new Mac will ship to me with Mountain Lion on it

If not, new Macs will have a voucher for free update.

Alba, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 08:14 (eleven years ago) link

Mine's somewhere in the air between shanghai and heathrow. I just keep refreshing the order tracking thing. It's embarrassing. I'm like a preposterous man-child.

sktsh, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 09:06 (eleven years ago) link

I did that with my last one and it appeared to be going China - US - Cambodia - back to US - Germant - UK or something preposterous. Maybe the reported times weren't in synch or maybe Apple really does want to destroy the planet.

Alba, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 09:29 (eleven years ago) link

Blimey! Apparently when mine gets to London it then has to go to a distribution centre up north for them to put an itunes voucher in the box before it comes back down here, which seems weird - why not just email the code?

sktsh, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 10:12 (eleven years ago) link

when did you order yours sktsh?

where can i get a mcdonalds quesadilla tho (silby), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 12:46 (eleven years ago) link

Early Friday evening (UK time) - it was built over the weekend and ready for shipping yesterday morning, but didn't get on a flight until this morning (according to apple and the shipping co, anyway - like alba said it might be that these things aren't always up to speed..)

sktsh, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 13:54 (eleven years ago) link

daaang mine was ordered on July 9th and isn't even preparing for shipment yet :( :(

where can i get a mcdonalds quesadilla tho (silby), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 15:00 (eleven years ago) link

That's weird (and shit!) - did you order something exotic/multiple items..?

sktsh, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 15:24 (eleven years ago) link

Safri 6.0 has removed the ability to set the default typeface for page display. You can still do it through a .css but it's annoying.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 17:27 (eleven years ago) link

xp just the 16GB of ram on the upper end model; shipping estimates were still 3-4 weeks at the time of my order and it's BTO so I'm not too worried still. I'm just jealous that you got yours faster :P

where can i get a mcdonalds quesadilla tho (silby), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 17:50 (eleven years ago) link

jeez it's so hard to resist just running out and snagging the rmbp

the late great, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 17:52 (eleven years ago) link

I probably didn't really need 16GB of RAM but considering it's not user-serviceable I figured I might as well. Paying for it in days of waiting I suppose.

So yeah go buy one.

where can i get a mcdonalds quesadilla tho (silby), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 17:54 (eleven years ago) link

rmbp with Tbird display is a bit of a letdown just b/c the retina is so gorgeous...but it is super cool to see things so BIG! never had a monitor that big before. though I'm not yet really sure how best to use it for writing, since full screen is just silly in the writing apps I know/use (latex)

Euler, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 17:56 (eleven years ago) link

i can't imagine what's possibly going to need 16 gb of ram that's not going to bottleneck somewhere else

my 2008 mbp has 4gb and i feel like there's always at least a gb free even when i'm running indesign, illustrator and aperture at the same time

the late great, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 17:57 (eleven years ago) link

Euler, just crank that font size up hueg and make sure anti-aliasing is on.

you're always gonna need more RAM is like the one rule of computing, i have ALWAYS regretted not maxing out when i could

funny-skrillex-bee_132455836669.gif (s1ocki), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 18:02 (eleven years ago) link

really? i keep my activity monitor open and i feel like even maxed out on apps i always have like two gb wired remaining.

unlike you i don't do video editing, but still ... sixteen gb?

the late great, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 18:05 (eleven years ago) link

i know what you mean though, i don't regret maxing out this santa rosa beast and when i first had it everyone was blown away by the difference in 2gb vs 4gb ram

part of me wants to buy NOW NOW NOW because when i bought this santa rosa they found a motherboard problem w/ the line and replaced it w/ an updated model about 9 months in and restarted my applecare

the late great, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 18:07 (eleven years ago) link

new stuff always requires more ram... i had 4 for a while on this machine (i7) but upgraded to 8 and everything's just smooooother. partic in apps like final cut (obv), lighroom etc.

So cross abt this. Thank god FF15 is fast and good again.

stet, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 18:26 (eleven years ago) link

Are there a lot of sites you regularly go to that don't specify a typeface, or are you talking about forcing to a default?

hot sauce delivery device (mh), Wednesday, 25 July 2012 18:37 (eleven years ago) link

there's this one, for a start! and yeah, there's actually a surprising number of a sites that just specify "serif".

I don't really want to force to a default, i just want my own choice for Serif. I might uninstall TNR and see what it does.

stet, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 19:07 (eleven years ago) link

fwiw I did a boot loader hack a couple weekends ago to get my Mac Pro 1,1 to run Mountain Lion just fine

Safari's also done something very weird to its fonts in the location bar. They're all spidery while typing

stet, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 19:57 (eleven years ago) link

i max out 4gb all the time

Looks okay to me. Maybe it's your eyes.

Keith, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 20:12 (eleven years ago) link

you're on retina though, aren't you? Bet this is like when the iPhone 4 came out and they stopped bother checking their graphics looked OK on the 3G phone.

stet, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 20:28 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah that's probably what it is - all the developers will have Retina ones. I figured you'd guess that anyway, so just decided to blame your eyes :)

Keith, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 20:30 (eleven years ago) link

siracusa's review is out btw

Time Machine can now back up to multiple volumes. When more than one volume is selected, Time Machine will do a full backup to each selected volume, taking turns each time it runs. I like the added protection that using a different backup program in addition to Time Machine provides. But failing that, doing two complete, separate backups to two different disks using Time Machine is almost as good.

:)

Apple's whole-disk encryption system introduced in Lion has been a great success. I've been using it for a year now without any problems and with excellent performance compared to the third-party disk encryption solution I was using with Snow Leopard.

Lion made encrypting the boot drive easy, but encrypting an arbitrary volume often required a trip to the command line. Mountain Lion remedies that situation. Just right-click any volume in the Finder and select the "Encrypt" command. You'll be prompted to enter a password and an optional hint, then encryption will begin in the background.

:))

not in a rush to upgrade though. cloud for document storage sounds great but confuses me tbqh.

caek, Thursday, 26 July 2012 12:10 (eleven years ago) link

Time Machine multiple volumes is one of those why-the-fuck-has-it-taken-so-long updates that the fannies will cream their jocks over like it's a delightful new concept

undermikey: bidness (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 26 July 2012 12:16 (eleven years ago) link

yes. i am glad steve jobs is dead.

caek, Thursday, 26 July 2012 12:18 (eleven years ago) link

i wish you could put a cap on the size of your time machine w/o having to split a separate vol
