yeah, i would have to, esp if i don't plan on driving. btw what time does public transport shut down there?

i've been there around thanksgiving and xmas time. but only for like a week or so, so i don't know if that is enough for me to assess whether i can deal with the non-summertime weather. i did live through 4 years of boston winters, though, so maybe it won't be that bad.

rayuela, Saturday, 4 August 2012 02:48 (eleven years ago) link

in terms of cold the winters are nothing compared to boston.

light rail runs til 1. buses til 2ish. there are a few night buses.

next time you visit let us know. it's always a help (and fun) to meet and ask questions of locals before moving. i know the next time i move i will TRACK DOWN the one ilxor that lives there.

I was going for italian plums last year, but missed the window. I so like the idea of a tree with tiny but persistent fruit.

Seattle! It was cool when I was there a couple of weeks ago. There's a job for me, apparently. In a month, I will move there.

If you can enjoy a December/January in Seattle, then you will be just fine.

fuck the fucking seattle times, seattle will continue to pretend to be a world-class city while not giving a shit about public transportation or the working class in general.

In the meantime, Constantine says he'll be sending the County Council a proposal to cut 550,000 hours of bus service annually.

72 routes gone. Goodbye, short bus to my workplace. Hello, 3 mile walk.

Jaq, Thursday, 24 April 2014 13:08 (ten years ago) link

ugh sorry, that's terrible.

estela, Thursday, 24 April 2014 13:10 (ten years ago) link

what's biking like in seattle?

clouds, Thursday, 24 April 2014 13:15 (ten years ago) link

I bike 22miles round trip to work nearly every day. If you chose the right path, it's actually extremely enjoyable. Once you get used to the hills, the whole city becomes accessible. The hills are daunting at first but you'll get used to them after a couple weeks of frequent riding. There are great paved trails, popular biking streets with bike lanes and lots of other bikers out to reinforce your decision to bike. As you can tell, I love biking. My work bag has gloves, rain gear and essential repair tools mixed in with the laptop and pens. The time it takes me to bike to Pioneer Sq from NE Seattle is about 5-10 mins longer than the bus and I go 3 miles out of my way to avoid the traffic and bike on quiet streets and through Interlaken. Biking to and from work is easily the best part of my day.

the reason i ask is that i'm considering u of wash. for my grad studies, but never want to own a car/live in a car-only city

clouds, Thursday, 24 April 2014 14:32 (ten years ago) link

I haven't had a car in Seattle for 16 years.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 22 July 2014 02:38 (nine years ago) link

are there jobs?

mookieproof, Tuesday, 22 July 2014 02:39 (nine years ago) link

one of the actors in The Mikado is formerly a popular liberal radio host who gave up his show to run for congress on the wealthy Eastside as a democrat and lost

RIP Paseo. Apparently there were some wage theft issues - http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2014/11/11/paseo-is-closing-and-now-the-best-sandwich-in-seattle-is-gone

Gonna be in Seattle during Thanksgiving week. I need to find a list of restaurants that are going to be open Thanksgiving Day, among my other research for the trip.

alomar lines (anky), Wednesday, 12 November 2014 16:48 (nine years ago) link

Had to explain the nonsexual usage of FAP to my daughter last night – for a minute or so she thought I was coming to Seattle for...I dunno, privacy I guess.

Pict in a blanket (WilliamC), Thursday, 13 November 2014 17:55 (nine years ago) link

looool

sleeve, Thursday, 13 November 2014 17:57 (nine years ago) link

xp to Morbs

Pict in a blanket (WilliamC), Thursday, 13 November 2014 18:13 (nine years ago) link

eww, what kinda lube makes that noise?

things lose meaning over time (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 13 November 2014 18:29 (nine years ago) link

apparently I was the one person in Seattle who had never heard of Paseo also the reason they shut down was cause of some really gross, exploitative, racist labor law violations and they can go fuck themselves

I Love Makonnen: New Answers (The Reverend), Thursday, 13 November 2014 20:02 (nine years ago) link

There's a labor suit pending against Paseo's owner, but we don't know why they closed. Whenever a cash-only business closes, tax issues are a pretty safe bet.

kate78, Thursday, 13 November 2014 20:57 (nine years ago) link

Looks like they just filed for bankruptcy: http://blogs.seattletimes.com/today/2014/11/paseo-files-for-bankruptcy-may-have-tax-problems/

kate78, Thursday, 13 November 2014 20:58 (nine years ago) link

Paseo's always seemed like a case study in how to make an end to end miserable dining experience. Insane lines, long waits, rude staff, botched orders, cash only, minimal seating, and food so sloppy you end up with a lapful of caramelized onions and mayonnaise by the time you're two bites into your sandwich.

The Stranger is getting really bad about posting their poorly researched, overly emotional snap takes on every local news situation.

Tomás Piñon (Ryan), Thursday, 13 November 2014 22:08 (nine years ago) link

crazy turnover at the stranger lately. buncha favorites gone
