Yeah--not necessarily the best choice if you're trying to deflect controversy.

Who did Zirin expect them to invite, Jane Fonda and Angela Davis???

So close to a final round McIlroy/Tiger pairing--would have been great. (Damn other-guy making all those birdies.)

can't figure out if tiger is the challenger to mcilroy or vice versa these days.

Randy Carol (darraghmac), Monday, 10 September 2012 10:56 (twelve years ago) link

this is going to ruffle some feathers

"What makes it such an awful position to be in is I have grown up my whole life playing for Ireland under the Golfing Union of Ireland umbrella, But the fact is, I’ve always felt more British than Irish. Maybe it was the way I was brought up, I don’t know, but I have always felt more of a connection with the UK than with Ireland. And so I have to weigh that up against the fact that I’ve always played for Ireland and so it is tough. Whatever I do, I know my decision is going to upset some people but I just hope the vast majority will understand."

Number None, Monday, 10 September 2012 11:01 (twelve years ago) link

Do you reckon? I think people will have been ready for it. He is a big Ulster rugby fan etc.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 10 September 2012 11:09 (twelve years ago) link

"big Ulster rugby fan etc" a polite way of saying it

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 10 September 2012 11:10 (twelve years ago) link

it might ruffle some feathers but surely the majority of ppl are far enough along now to realise that UK citizens living in NI might identify with that side of the heritage as easily and legitimately as eg Irvine insisting on the tricolour in F1. Can't imagine it'll be a big deal.

Forget it jake, it's Portadown

Randy Carol (darraghmac), Monday, 10 September 2012 11:16 (twelve years ago) link

what is annoying is it will slightly affect our ability to cheer him on as one of our own, and that's going to be important when he starts winning 3/4 majors a year.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 10 September 2012 11:29 (twelve years ago) link

if you accept that, you lose at least some of the ability to cheer any of the NI athletes. I don't think he has a problem with being claimed by both sides, it's got to be something that all NI celebrities are aware of. Can't imagine that he's asking the irish to stop cheering for him, he's just clarifying his own position, which he's obv got the right to do.

I don't find it gratifying when someone who identifies as Irish feels the need to use their celebrity to have a go at the UK heritage of NI either.

Randy Carol (darraghmac), Monday, 10 September 2012 11:37 (twelve years ago) link

it's not really that I'd stop from the POV of disowning him or something, more that I'd feel less entitled to do so after he's had to sort of declare himself as UK. but yeah of course will always root for him. what's weird is that both him and g-mac seem Irish to me.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 10 September 2012 11:47 (twelve years ago) link

na no fuckin way gmac has such a unionist chin it's untrue, they both do tbh. it's in the walk, too, a kinda straightback duckwaddle that gmac has, i'm tellin ya we'd spot in in the communion line in an instant.

Randy Carol (darraghmac), Monday, 10 September 2012 11:51 (twelve years ago) link

pure van morrison head on the two boys, surely

Randy Carol (darraghmac), Monday, 10 September 2012 11:53 (twelve years ago) link

I guess I mean more the way they speak. Rory looks Irish for sure tho.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 10 September 2012 12:14 (twelve years ago) link

hmmm idk, van morrison head like

Randy Carol (darraghmac), Monday, 10 September 2012 12:17 (twelve years ago) link

clown head, a bloke in my class in school was the image of him. surname walsh.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Monday, 10 September 2012 12:27 (twelve years ago) link

irl cackle @ unionist chin. and the walk thing is so true!

https://twitter.com/McIlroyRory/status/245216699652132864/photo/1/large

everything about McIlroy suggests he's the product of a mixed marriage. as you say, it's going to be an issue with NI celebs. I think he could become someone for both communities, sort of like Best (who was Protestant iirc).

I'm p sure Gmac leans Irish but I understand why neither of them want to come down firmly on one side. They wave the NI flag after tournaments.

couldn't understand any of the last ten posts

really looking forward to tiger and rory duking it out over the next few years, though part of me feels sad for tiger - it almost seems beneath him to have to chase some young gun like this - ten years ago we all thought he'd be dominating into his forties

la goonies (k3vin k.), Monday, 10 September 2012 22:18 (twelve years ago) link

idk, a year ago if you offered tiger the chance to be duking it out with *anyone* for top spots again he'd have taken it i'm sure. And mcilroy isn't beneath anyone as an opponent, dude is setting about dominating the sport in his own right

amazing circus shot from sergio - somehow his drive found rest 10 feet up in a tree, so he climbs the tree & hits a backwards, one-handed shot into the fairway

I'll root for Tiger, as always. I'm still on the fence as to whether he'll ever win another major. I feel like it's like an all-or-nothing question: if he's able to win one, he'll then breeze past Nicklaus within the next few years.

clemenza, Thursday, 11 April 2013 13:49 (eleven years ago) link
