i thnk u shld install the old connector and then bitch abt the new one.

honestly tho probably the new one, assuming they make an old>new converter (which they might not, knowing them)

stet, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 15:54 (eleven years ago) link

who knows what the new one even does besides charge, maybe its better than mini-usb in some way. but staying the same because a bunch of hotels have old cables lying around is ridic dude

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 16:07 (eleven years ago) link

Just get a USB port instead of a dock connector, duh. Future proof for the foreseeable future.

"Pffft" --buddha (silby), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 16:07 (eleven years ago) link

Two of the last round of hotels I stayed in had glitched/broken docking thingies anyway.

Come to think of it, if I stayed in fewer hotels I could be buying an iPhone 5

your native bacon (mh), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 16:08 (eleven years ago) link

otm, this is a wake-up call

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 16:10 (eleven years ago) link

hotels is like a ignorable fraction of the number of ipod cables and docks out there. everyone on this thread either has at least one of those cables in their own house or in one of their immediate family's houses. the things are entrenched. you're under-imagining 400 million

stet, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 16:11 (eleven years ago) link

lol at people who use docks

― caek, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 10:20 (5 hours ago) Permalink

eh I find my little cheapo dock from costco pretty useful actually, e.g. I can listen to NPR or Spotfiy in the kitchen only without bothering the napping little one and the quick plug and play is very easy and convenient. Obviously I'm not looking for audiophile sound out of the thing.

look at this quarterstaff (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 16:12 (eleven years ago) link

I have a ton of them! Guess what, I've happily swapped them between iPods, iPhones, and iPads over a decade and it's been amazingly easy. I completely expect that I will eventually end up with devices with the new connector and get another decade of ease-of-swappability, with the added bonus of having a smaller connector on the end.

fwiw I griped a little when they switched from having a sweet firewire port on the top of the iPod, too

your native bacon (mh), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 16:14 (eleven years ago) link

yeah you're right, eventually. so maybe in abt 10 years the new connector will be as common as the current one already is. that will be brilliant, not long to wait for us to be in the same place we are today once again.

and in the meantime it can be really exciting looking at it going hay it is 3mm narrower the future is so awesome

― lag∞n, Wednesday, September 5, 2012 10:53 AM

The last two cars I rented had a built-in USB connector. Worked great and use whatever cable you want.

Sheesh, the panic about the new connector is such a non-issue for me.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:05 (eleven years ago) link

did the tunes flow through

hackers could hack your car, be careful out there

USADA Bin Dopen (dayo), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:14 (eleven years ago) link

i was just in a car with a usb adapter and the tunes flowed

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 18:32 (eleven years ago) link

My car has a USB adapter which is fine, but I'm kind of pissed that the 7 years or whatever I have of ipod/iphone/ipad cables is rendered obsolete - I've ended up with enough of them that I can just casually leave them in my wherever I might end up needing one.

joygoat, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:18 (eleven years ago) link

they're only gonna be obsolete if you get a new phone/ipod, think about THAT

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:28 (eleven years ago) link

guys I have bought into the apple lifestyle, all the cables are interchangeable, what will I do

if I go back to a nokia phone lifestyle will I be able to use the same cables forever?

your native bacon (mh), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

the late great, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 21:06 (eleven years ago) link

not kidding, i bet at some point phones are going to have no correct orientation

hockey pucks

catbus otm (gbx), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 21:08 (eleven years ago) link

they could have the whole touchscreen be an induction microphone and the iOS orientation just flips around depending on how you're holding it

the late great, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 21:10 (eleven years ago) link

and the speakers could be a long ribbon that runs all the way around the long edge of the phone

the late great, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 21:11 (eleven years ago) link

best sound in mobile speaker history, just don't hold it, ever

i like the different effects i can get on my phone speakers by holding it differently, little wah wah phase actions for big techno buildups for example /sodcaster

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 21:26 (eleven years ago) link

the ribbon would be inside the case and you'd have a little grill run all of the way around

the phone would pick up subdermal vibrations when you talk, you just have to light touch a corner to your jaw

the late great, Wednesday, 5 September 2012 21:32 (eleven years ago) link

i remember hearing once about a rumored phone that you would wear on your wrist like a watch and it sent vibrations down your finger so that when you stuck the tip of your finger in your ear it acted as a speaker; the microphone was in the strap that went around your wrist. it was being "invented in japan" iirc, and i was convinced it would become a reality

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 22:24 (eleven years ago) link

can find no references to it after 2003

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 22:26 (eleven years ago) link

i want that

Author ~ Coach ~ Goddess (s1ocki), Wednesday, 5 September 2012 22:30 (eleven years ago) link

'nothing'
