Let's bitch about our stupid, annoying co-workers

Not exactly coworker here, but a consultant is driving me batshit. He requested an AutoCAD background file from us, so I sent it over right away. Got a call that this didn't work, he's running an older version of AutoCAD and needs it to be saved as Release 11. Now, I'm not sure how exactly to explain this to those unfamiliar with AutoCAD but Release 11 came out in 1990. As in 22 years ago. We're running AutoCAD 2011 at my office, and saving it back that far isn't even an option. I'm working on it, but no luck with something he can open yet.

Anyway, my IA kicks in when this consultant sends out an email to the client, copying me, that says "the architect isn't being cooperative and getting me the files I need, our work may be delayed". His first request for a file came in at 7:50 this morning. It is now 9:45 and I've sent him five different files in an attempt to get him one that works. Its not my fault you're running 22 year-old software, so don't bitch to the client to make it look like we aren't being helpful when I'm busy bending myself over backwards to help your Luddite ass.

I'm doing an Autocad course through a government scheme at the moment, the teacher last week said that if we went to autodesk we should be able to download the programme.
Might be an option,if that is possible outside Ireland. I haven't looked into it myself.
Though having a computer that wants to run a '90 version presumably means he wants a much newer computer anyway. Is the guy a Luddite?

Stevolende, Monday, 24 September 2012 14:48 (eleven years ago) link

Sounded like teacher meant for free there too. Might have more to do with us being students that wouldn't cross over into business but still might be an option once he gets with the programme and gets a functional computer.

newstart in my dept. is driving me crazy with his crappy work ethic, constant sighing and inane questions/statements. a sample from today:

- "Is Hallowe'en the 25th?"
- "The year should end on 21/12, the winter solstice. I feel quite strongly about this."
- "What kind of 4s do you do?"
- "Blacking up is sometimes acceptable... if done 'sensitively'." (!)
- "Is there still time for a coffee?" (asked at 16:45)
- "I fucking hate Carrot Top." (apropos of nothing)

Why new thread? This one is not even at 5,000, which seems like nothing these days. Though really a new thread is fine w/ me as long as the first post contains a link to this thread (as should be done for all rolling threads!)

The associate attorney I've posted about quite a lot here actually did something good today: He saw my 60-some-year-old boss for the first time since she got her hair cut and dyed, and he said to her, "Oh nice, you got your hair did. It looks good." She looked at him funny and teased him about his grammar. Meanwhile, I held back from laughing my ass off b/c he's the epitome of whitebread from Iowa, and it was obvious that he wasn't saying "got your hair did" humorously or to try to sound cool, but because for some reason that was the phrase that happened to come out of his mouth.

- was on holidays friday/monday
- as is my wont, I did not once check my email, because ON LEAVE (and besides i was 2 hours away on a seaside cliff with a friend)
- got in this morning FIVE MINUTES late; while PC was still booting up I grabed some water (no point wasting time rite?)
- boss corralled me in kitchen demanding i send him some info he was after "in the next 5 -10 mins please"
- he then followed this up with a terse all staff email reminding people not to be late for work
- boss had sent me this request the day before. When I was on leave. Which he knew. Did he expect me to check me mail? Eff that
- turns out the things he wanted? I'd already sent him, before. TWICE. But you cannot, CANNOT argue with this man and say "you already have this", that answer is NEVER CORRECT.
- bolded the bits he neeeded from overal (one fscking page) document, re sent to him

FUUUUCK

My late dad worked in engineering and a lot of the older guys had really old computers and versions of AutoCAD, this made me laugh. He got a new computer two years before he died, but his previous computer was from 1998! As was his AutoCAD. But jeez does 1990 AutoCAD even work? Might make a nice children's game.

Yeah I can't even imagine the PC that its running on. Apparently one of the files I sent him that day finally did work, but I'm honestly baffled as to how.

I was given one of those summertime "housekeeping" tasks, with the understanding that I'd get two temps to help me. Senior staff can be gone for four weeks at a time in summer!

I have to work extra hours and I'm afraid to log those hours and ask for a raise. I mean, I was in denial about it, July came and I thought, "surely we'll have a temp assistant coming in soon." Now it's the end of the summer and I have to finish this stuff by October. I'll get it done but not without putting in extra hours.

Manager posted on FB (we were friends before my hire) about how I was promoted "instead" of her into a marketing role, completely ignoring my 15 years of (hobbyist, but still solid) design experience and making it sound like people just like me better and she should've got it :P C'mon, that's just petty.

Wow, some people really should not post to Facebook. That is so unprofessional! I think it's okay to bitch on a bulletin board, but I wouldn't complain about jobs on Facebook unless I didn't have a serious commitment. Offending the wrong person could screw up your career for YEARS.

yeah, it's kind of shitty. We both do sales reporting now, I do the grunt work and she builds the more interesting reports.. I mentioned in my review that I'd like to move into marketing should the opportunity arise and she said that probably wouldn't happen. Then a VP went past her completely and offered me a role! That was ~6 weeks ago and no official announcement has happened yet and she's been very distant and weird since. I DIDN'T DO ANYTHING. I even gave her a heads up immediately when I realized they hadn't spoken to her - she didn't "officially" find out until two weeks ago. I feel like that deserves a little more than casual resentment. Ah well.

Maybe some of you do this as well, but I don't get the guy who eats lunch at this desk watching straight-up recordings of Halo missions on YouTube.

FFM, that manager is being super unprofessional and also a jealous petty jerk. Also - congratulations!!!

carl agatha, Thursday, 27 September 2012 16:56 (eleven years ago) link

Wow, that is so immature. I don't know if you like your job or not - it sounds like you do. I hate when you love your job and most of your co-workers but then you get some childish behavior. Don't know if that's your situation, but I've been there. Like you're happy and like everyone then some childish snub occurs. I mean, you get comfortable and excited and someone pulls your chair out from under you.

I have a friend who has worked one shit job after another and her attitude is, well, I'll just leave if I get sick of it, "says more about you than me." With my resume, I can't have that carefree attitude. I mean, "college degree, graduate work, design and publishing experience...and you just walk out of a job if you don't like it." Doesn't work well in interviews.

Thanks, Carl! I got to submit my first ad to be printed in a Legit (trade) Magazine, felt so cool.
I like Excel but my current job is hard to *love* - I think the new one will be extremely lovable! I'm the type who prefers to be busy than bored. The kicker is, I'm still not a 'manager' so it wouldn't have been a promotion for her! No good reason for angst. OH WELL. She's not being mean to me directly, just kind of annoying.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 27 September 2012 17:12 (eleven years ago) link

FFM! - that's superb. Well done! As for your co-worker, imo it'd be better to be mean to you directly (not that she should do that either) than post somewhere where she surely knows you'll see it. Bizarre.

My boss asked for help attaching photographs from My Pictures to an email using Outlook. She couldn't find the right picture b/c they were not showing up as thumbnails, so I told her just to go to Start and then to My Pictures so we could copy and paste them into the email. Before I could stop her, she closed her draft email and closed Outlook before clicking Start. That was weird b/c she definitely is more knowledgeable than that.

Next I had to basically give her a grueling tutorial on how to copy and paste a file. She seemed to think she had to open the picture and copy it from the image itself. Back in Outlook, she kept trying to paste it in the subject line - probably thinking it was the attachments line.

Then she wanted to send two other pictures to another person. She went to close Outlook again but I stopped her. She said, "But I have to go to the pictures folder!" I told her that she didn't have to close Outlook to do that - just click Start. She sat still, looking baffled, said, "But then how do I get to the Pictures folder?" and closed Outlook. Then I had to repeat my entire Copy/Paste 101, but this time with the black magic of selecting multiple files ;__; which she does ALL THE TIME in other programs. She performs ALL of those tasks all the time

In Outlook, she tried to paste the files into the subject line.

After all that she said, "Argh. Why can't Blackberry make the process more user friendly?"
