Guys I just used apple maps to go somewhere and i got there.

Also the cache meant I could use it on the underground. Maybe everything will be okay

what if you only have four rows of icons? :-(

If you live in London you should buy the A-Z app and then you'll have all the offline mapping you need (no directions, mind).

Alba, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 19:33 (eleven years ago) link

yeah I think apple maps is fine when it works, it's just those moments when it doesn't

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 19:35 (eleven years ago) link

I've been psyching myself up to upgrade, I feel it coming soon

vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

Alba otm re the A to Zed. for "directions" i tend to figure out which road i'm on, look at the map, and then figure out which road to turn onto next in order to get where i'm going. call me loco??

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 26 September 2012 20:58 (eleven years ago) link

And that sounds cra...wait.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 September 2012 21:07 (eleven years ago) link

Tracer - I have a terrible visuo-spatial faculties, so the (old) Maps app drawing a nice little line that shows the whole route is enormously useful in helping me navigate this crazy city on foot without having to stop at every turn (for too long).

The iOS 6 update just showed up on my iPod Touch this morning. Should I go ahead and I upgrade or are there any issues to consider?

I'm kind of confused about the whole Google Maps hullabaloo. I understand that it isn't built in with the OS, but can't you just get it from the App Store. If that's the case, what's the big deal?

Moodles, Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:46 (eleven years ago) link

You can't just get it from the App Store; it is not a standalone app as of yet. Instead best thing to do is essentially 'bookmark' maps.google.com to the desktop, which you can do in Safari.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:47 (eleven years ago) link

is that true for YouTube also or is there a downloadable app for it now?

Moodles, Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:48 (eleven years ago) link

There's a Youtube app.

set me on fire RAAAAH (DJP), Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:50 (eleven years ago) link

so other than losing Google Maps, what are the benefits of upgrading on an iPod Touch? Or is it pointless?

Moodles, Thursday, 27 September 2012 13:53 (eleven years ago) link

there are some performance improvements on older iphones, not sure about ipods

At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment.

Tim Cook OTM.

Google notably not mentioned once.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 28 September 2012 13:21 (eleven years ago) link

Except in the fourth para. After Bing, MapQuest and Waze (?!)

"we are sorry that apple maps sucks so bad"

"apple maps is now being used by over 100 million people"

barthes simpson, Friday, 28 September 2012 13:29 (eleven years ago) link

idk, "Use these apps or these websites" is kind of the order of preference for most iOS users. If Google had a standalone app, I'd imagine it'd be at the top of that application list.

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Friday, 28 September 2012 13:33 (eleven years ago) link

Without a doubt. Would be nice to see it on the top of the free apps chart for a few months.

Jeff, Friday, 28 September 2012 13:54 (eleven years ago) link

"Another option is an atlas from your local bookstore."

I did loll.

Alba, Friday, 28 September 2012 14:02 (eleven years ago) link

Er, lol.

Alba, Friday, 28 September 2012 14:03 (eleven years ago) link

Is there a reason (contractual?) why, now Apple are conceding that there's problem, they can't put the old Maps app in the App store as a free download for those who want "an alternative"?

Alba, Saturday, 29 September 2012 09:27 (eleven years ago) link

Their contract only has a year to run, so I'm guessing they want to avoid another shitstorm in 2013 when they yank it.

stet, Saturday, 29 September 2012 11:41 (eleven years ago) link

Hmm. Does that mean the Maps app on iPhones running any version of iOS prior to v6 will stop working in a year's time?

Alba, Saturday, 29 September 2012 14:19 (eleven years ago) link

I mean, there must be some people still on the iPhone 3G who can't update to iOS6 even if they wanted to.

Alba, Saturday, 29 September 2012 14:21 (eleven years ago) link

Not sure -- neither side has revealed the terms. I wondered if they might put an Apple Maps on the store for users on old devices, but then they might also just not care.

stet, Saturday, 29 September 2012 16:00 (eleven years ago) link

I'm going to try upgrading my touch and just hope I don't regret it. I'm getting tired of all the app crashes I've been experiencing, so perhaps this will help.

Moodles, Saturday, 29 September 2012 16:48 (eleven years ago) link

I just upgraded to mountain lion did I make a horrible decision

barthes simpson, Saturday, 29 September 2012 16:50 (eleven years ago) link

how do I shot imessage cross device sync

barthes simpson, Saturday, 29 September 2012 16:52 (eleven years ago) link

awesome, iTunes is forcing me to do a full restore on my touch :>/

Moodles, Saturday, 29 September 2012 17:19 (eleven years ago) link

ok, restore was a success, it seems to be coming back with all my apps and didn't lose my photos. Unfortunately I have to re-sync all of my offline files for Spotify, which is going to take a really long time.

Google Street View just showed up on my iOS 6 browser maps. yeeaahhh!

Lee626, Thursday, 4 October 2012 13:30 (eleven years ago) link

What does that mean?

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 4 October 2012 13:32 (eleven years ago) link

that ppl who upgraded to the latest iPhone/iPad operating system, and anyone with a iPhone 5, can use see a ground-level view from where they are or any other location. This capability was yanked from the latest OS release, along with certain other features that the old Google-based maps had that the new Apple maps don't. There's no Google maps app as of yet, but you can access them to some extent through the Safari browser. But until today street view was unavailable that way.
