iPad minis smaller

The idea of there being a market for a tablet sized between iphone and ipad baffles me.

WmC, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 01:57 (eleven years ago) link

my mom wants one, she also wants it to literally be a phone

I think she's the mythical Samsung Galaxy Note consumer

have you used a kindle for reading books, it's a nice size, not annoying to hold up for long periods of time

Kindle Fire and Nook Color both sell and have multiple iterations.

if this thing has a low-res screen it's going to be shit to read

lol @ how many resolutions app developers are going to have to support, btw

乒乓, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 02:10 (eleven years ago) link

Gruber linked speculation a ways back that the iPad mini could have the same resolution in pixels as the iPads 1 and 2, just denser

iPad has a 10" screen, iPad mini is for women to absorb their menstrual flow

someone just asked the skritter people whether their iphone app would work 'on the iPad minis'

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 06:01 (eleven years ago) link

this is pretty much a defensive move by apple to stave off kindle/nook/android tablets, it's more about price point than it is about form factor tbh

it'll cannibalize some ipod touch sales but a smart business move if they want to continue to own the tablet space

space dokken (Edward III), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 20:05 (eleven years ago) link

if priced right this will end up in a lot of kids stockings this xmas

The Owls of Ja Rule (DJP), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 20:15 (eleven years ago) link

my wife got her 8gb iphone 4 for free from verizon, there's no other smartphone with that same deal. apple's goal at this point seems to be mass saturation to keep their ecosystem thriving, which is smart because it's how they continue to hold off competition (e.g. windows phone and the new blackberry will be DOA when the tumbleweeds are seen rolling through their respective app stores).

they're huge enough to do some loss leader action and still come out ahead so the thing I'm most curious about the ipad mini is price point. signs point to $249 but $199 would absolutely demolish the competition.

space dokken (Edward III), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 20:20 (eleven years ago) link

I haven't read much about this but know people have brought it up...but how can they win on price when a Kindle Fire is already cheaper than an iPod Touch, so everyone's assuming the iPad Mini has to cost more than the Touch, no?

dan selzer, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 20:32 (eleven years ago) link

no

space dokken (Edward III), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 20:33 (eleven years ago) link

iPad mini cheaper than all but one of the iPod touches seems crazy to me, but Horace agrees: http://www.asymco.com/2012/10/17/ios-portfolio-price-distribution/

they're not really winning on price so much as providing good value at a huge range of price points

xp

hot slag (lukas), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 20:33 (eleven years ago) link

a no-contract iphone 4/5 is more expensive than an iPad.

乒乓, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 20:35 (eleven years ago) link

I really hope this is an electronic photo frame, just to embarrass all the technorati dicks who think they know everything

turn left onto bisexual woman (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 20:37 (eleven years ago) link

initial projections were a $299 price point, some rumors from a european retailer indicate $249, but part of the price equation is specs/value. is a kindle at $199 worth an ipad mini at $249? I know what 90% of kids in america would say.

what was that seth meyers line - this xmas thousands of kids received a kindle fire from their grandparents who always buy the wrong thing?

xps

space dokken (Edward III), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 20:38 (eleven years ago) link

does anyone here have a kindle fire or know someone who has one? my friends all passed them off to relatives

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 20:44 (eleven years ago) link

My girlfriend has one, a gift from her father. She likes it fine. She doesn't use any apps. She reads books (currently Wuthering Heights), reads and writes emails and surfs the web. I've used it a few times and I find it fine for those purposes. Compared to the considerably larger and more expensive iPad, I see it's appeal. Compared to a similarly-sized slightly more expensive iPad Mini, less so.

However, Amazon has been successful not stealing users from Apple, but growing from regular Kindle users. Someone who may not see the appeal of an iPad but love their kindle, then you tell them "hey this kindle lets you watch TV shows" or whatever. Without really thinking about that you can do that and more and better w/ an iPad...including the part about reading Kindle titles.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 20:50 (eleven years ago) link

From what I understand, Apple is positioning the iPod mini (or whatever they call it) as an alternative to Kindle/Nook-type dedicated book readers - basically an e-reader that can do other things too, more than as a direct competitor to existing small all-purpose tablets which thus far haven't sold very well. I don't think it will cannibalize iPod touch sales even at the same price - it doesn't fit in your pocket which is a key attribute of the both the iPod Touch and the iPhone.

Lee626, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 21:02 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, feel like iPod Touch is the games/teens/apps device, iPad mini is the reader/commuter/thirtysomething device. Hence overlapping prices.

stet, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 21:04 (eleven years ago) link

I've watched streamed video from Amazon on an iPad and used the Kindle iPad app, and from what I've heard the experience is as good or better on an iPad than on the Fire. The main issue being that you have to purchase the book/video/music/subscription on the web instead of from in the app, but that's not an issue when I'm using Amazon Prime videos or whatever. Purchasing books from a classic Kindle kind of sucks, anyway.

I still think the number of friends I have who regularly listen to music off of an Android-powered phone is nearly zero while iPhone users seem to use it for music more? Might be due to my demographic being skewed, since I bet kids use them for music.

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 21:04 (eleven years ago) link

it's still easier to get music and manage it on an Apple device, or at least that's the prevailing perception.

I do think the new iPod Touch is a bit pricey for the market they're aiming at though. I'm impressed with the device itself though.

Lee626, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 21:16 (eleven years ago) link

I was considering upgrading my daughter's ipod touch 2 this xmas, but I'd get her the ipad mini instead if the price point is comparable, I have to imagine others will be in the same boat

space dokken (Edward III), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 21:20 (eleven years ago) link

I'm sure many will compare the two, in the same way many have decided between a Macbook Air and an iPad 3, but ultimately they'll appeal to different people. I just wouldn't want to carry around a 7 or 8" tablet everywhere I go so if I had to choose only one, I'd go with the iPod touch. But if I used it more for reading than music i'd get the iPad mini.

Lee626, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 21:45 (eleven years ago) link

well yeah, "cannibalize" usually means taking some portion of sales, I'm not saying the ipad mini is going to completely replace the touch

space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 18 October 2012 01:02 (eleven years ago) link

(and Apple of course famously doesn't worry about cannibalizing its own products. The iPhone has obv cut deeply into iPod sales, etc.)

Lee626, Thursday, 18 October 2012 09:55 (eleven years ago) link

If you don't cannibalise your own products somebody else will, look at the poor blackberry.

There's some very OTM posts up there. In the states at least there still isn't really a market for tablets, there is a market for kjindles and a market for iPads. I think its absolutely right that the Kindle Fire is being sold as the Kindle plus rather than an iPad competitor because, at the moment, anything that gets sold as an iPad competitor suffers from not being an iPad, even if it is a nominally better device. For a long time now, apple has been able to sell hardware with inferior specs because people want the ecosystem.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Thursday, 18 October 2012 11:07 (eleven years ago) link

Does the Nexus 7 not sell well in the US then? Fairly popular here in the UK and looks a good bit of kit for the price.

groovypanda, Thursday, 18 October 2012 12:09 (eleven years ago) link

The iPad is really the only tablet that's selling in States. Retailers say "there isn't a market for tablets; there's a market for iPads".

I don't think that will last indefinitely though. There's lots of good Android apps by now, but most of them are designed for phones, not large-screen tablets.

Lee626, Thursday, 18 October 2012 13:29 (eleven years ago) link

(iPad projected to account for 75% of US tablet sales - stats here)

shouldn't warning signs be going off in your head if you spend more loving detail talking about your phone than your kid, even in a post about said phone? like maybe "hmmm, perhaps I should stop jackin' it to my phone and give my child a hug" or something? I dunno

I don't know much about EMRs but I would bet Epic would figure out how to compile MUMPS down to objective-C bytecode before they'd spend money making something attractive
