Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, The Grey, and Attenberg. Of those of these that I've seen, that is.
― Gukbe, Thursday, 29 November 2012 03:46 (eleven years ago) link
I liked The Grey and Beyond the Black Rainbow.
Fuck The Turin Horse.
― Simon H., Thursday, 29 November 2012 03:47 (eleven years ago) link
My #1 of the year so far.

I'd have been much more impressed with a movie about life as tedium that *wasn't* so fucking tedious. (And didactic.)
But I actually saw it at Telluride in '10 so it doesn't get to be the worst movie of 2011 for me
― Simon H., Thursday, 29 November 2012 04:00 (eleven years ago) link
"Goodbye, First Love" = ah, young amour; so classy, so boring.
― saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 29 November 2012 04:01 (eleven years ago) link
Monsieur Lazhar = never boring but underwritten
― the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 29 November 2012 04:04 (eleven years ago) link
yeah, better than it needs to be, still not great.
― Simon H., Thursday, 29 November 2012 04:15 (eleven years ago) link
worth spending a twelfth of a day watching?

Anyone's thoughts on The Loneliest Planet?
― Gukbe, Thursday, 29 November 2012 04:33 (eleven years ago) link
Anyone seen Rust and Bone yet? So cheesy and sentimental it's ridiculous. Couldn't believe it.
― DavidM, Thursday, 29 November 2012 10:21 (eleven years ago) link
someone I respect used the word "stupid."

Hyde Park on Hudson just made me feel sorry for Bill Murray the entire time.
― Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Thursday, 29 November 2012 13:09 (eleven years ago) link
I mean, I know there's a doilied old biddy audience out there for these stuffy, cursivey movies. But Murray seems to be grimacing his way through it.
― Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Thursday, 29 November 2012 13:12 (eleven years ago) link
A few thoughts here.

I really dug Loneliest Planet, maybe only slightly less than DNDN. Loktev always gets great spatial depth with her images.
― Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Thursday, 29 November 2012 13:20 (eleven years ago) link
DNDN did get better after the first thirty minutes.
― the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 29 November 2012 13:22 (eleven years ago) link
Also am a huge sucker for schematically bifurcated movies.
― Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Thursday, 29 November 2012 13:22 (eleven years ago) link
anybody see Young and Wild?

i love long movies.
― ❏❐❑❒ (gr8080), Thursday, 29 November 2012 18:36 (eleven years ago) link
i didn't find rust and bone cheesy or sentimental.
― jed_, Thursday, 29 November 2012 22:41 (eleven years ago) link
in fact thought it quite successfully resisted being either of those things.

Wow. Really? What about the scene where Ali is getting pulverised in the fight, all is lost and everything goes into slo-mo. But then catching sight of brave Stephanie wobbling towards him on her prosthetic legs is suddenly enough to rally him into fighting back and he wins! And the bit where one shag is enough to knock the trauma and depression out of Stephanie and she sticks on Katy Perry and she's back doing her whale training moves/dance, just like that! And the ending, where we're suddenly in a snowy location, the only time we're away from the film's primary setting, seemingly just to have a shamelessly Big Emotional denouement. The film has the naturalistic look and feel of your typical indie film, and is very understated, but then it lapses into moments of pure melodrama in order to pull on your heartstrings.

kind of a shitty list tbh
I'll take BSS over at least 3/10 of that list.

also all those ties make it look like only 5 people voted

I had to assume that was the case.

Hoping that the NYFCC can manage to restrain themselves from voting The Master for best film, but now watch them pick Silver Linings Playbook instead.

My favorite US and/or multiplex film so far.
Almayer's Folly and Elena both worth looking for, tho I found them difficult and not-quite-all-that, respectively.

I don't love it quite as much as I did Mr. Fox, but close enough.

David E. shills big time for ZDT in his top 10 (which slotted too early for him to catch Tarantino, LotR Redux, etc.):
