Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, The Grey, and Attenberg. Of those of these that I've seen, that is.

I liked The Grey and Beyond the Black Rainbow.

My #1 of the year so far.

I'd have been much more impressed with a movie about life as tedium that *wasn't* so fucking tedious. (And didactic.)

But I actually saw it at Telluride in '10 so it doesn't get to be the worst movie of 2011 for me

"Goodbye, First Love" = ah, young amour; so classy, so boring.

Anyone's thoughts on The Loneliest Planet?

Anyone seen Rust and Bone yet? So cheesy and sentimental it's ridiculous. Couldn't believe it.

Hyde Park on Hudson just made me feel sorry for Bill Murray the entire time.

I mean, I know there's a doilied old biddy audience out there for these stuffy, cursivey movies. But Murray seems to be grimacing his way through it.

I really dug Loneliest Planet, maybe only slightly less than DNDN. Loktev always gets great spatial depth with her images.

DNDN did get better after the first thirty minutes.

Also am a huge sucker for schematically bifurcated movies.

i love long movies.

i didn't find rust and bone cheesy or sentimental.

in fact thought it quite successfully resisted being either of those things.

Wow. Really? What about the scene where Ali is getting pulverised in the fight, all is lost and everything goes into slo-mo. But then catching sight of brave Stephanie wobbling towards him on her prosthetic legs is suddenly enough to rally him into fighting back and he wins! And the bit where one shag is enough to knock the trauma and depression out of Stephanie and she sticks on Katy Perry and she's back doing her whale training moves/dance, just like that!
And the ending, where we're suddenly in a snowy location, the only time we're away from the film's primary setting, seemingly just to have a shamelessly Big Emotional denouement. The film has the naturalistic look and feel of your typical indie film, and is very understated, but then it lapses into moments of pure melodrama in order to pull on your heartstrings.

My favorite US and/or multiplex film so far.

Almayer's Folly and Elena both worth looking for, tho I found them difficult and not-quite-all-that, respectively.

I don't love it quite as much as I did Mr. Fox, but close enough.

It lives on the border quite comfortably (and comfortingly for most I expect).

relieved to see The Deep Blue Sea and Oslo, August 31st on his list.

I like them both -- and they're getting overrated.
