not that batshit but really i think this theme encapsulates how distorted the Republican talking-point world-picture looks from where I'm sitting. WTF are they even talking about here? What is it that Republicans imagine they're oh-so-generously putting on the table?
Also have seen at least two cartoons mysterious casting Obama as Wimpy from the Popeye cartoons. So one of those has to be just an obvious shameless rip-off, right? How do you look yourself in the mirror doing that?
― Doctor Casino, Friday, 30 November 2012 22:41 (eleven years ago) link
I choose to interpret the first one as the republican party desperately grasping for the real world, symbolized by Obama, yet failing, and tumbling down into the darkness. It's probably not meant that way.

prohibition kind of worked. people drank a truly grotesque amount pre-prohibition, most people abided by the law during it, and drank way less after, even now.

goole, that's interesting - is there a book or anything that discusses this? I've always sort of bought the myth that it made no difference/impact beyond "turning ordinary people into criminals" and providing a foundation for organized crime, etc. But what you say makes a ton of sense.
like, for example even in that cartoon, the bar only has one customer.

I know that a lot of business associations were in favor of prohibition because workers had a tendency to show up drunk, which is anecdotal support for the truly grotesque amount of drinking people did. Also the temperance movement was largely women because of the link between drinking and domestic violence, plus men being too drunk to work and financially support their families.

(Learned that at a lecture on prohibition at the Chicago History Museum, so I can't link to anything.)

the gun itself is the violence it symbolises, so fits nicely in the top-left category
the others are all pretty otm, apart from the rightmost two, which are yer typical rightwing canards, and 'decaying morality', which is again bullshit considering where 'morality' lay a few decades back

shit like 'decaying morality' will forever be too stupid to be given a moment's consideration, certain social structures and mores could 'collapse' a thousand fold & still not necessarily 'compete' with public executions/racism at the dinnertable/marital oppression of women &c. it's the laziest thinking. p sure you can apply this dazzling unpacking technique to the others, too.

I agree with the general sentiment of the cartoon, if not the demonization of individual TSA employees (I have never seen a TSA employee enjoy hefting my boob with the back of her hand to check whether it was my underwire or something more nefarious* setting off the metal detector). Or the implicit homophobia.
*there is nothing more nefarious than an underwire bra.
