Do they catch Bin Laden tucking, applying lipliner and prancing in front of a camcorder to Q Lazzarus?

My favorite US and/or multiplex film so far.
Almayer's Folly and Elena both worth looking for, tho I found them difficult and not-quite-all-that, respectively.

I don't love it quite as much as I did Mr. Fox, but close enough.

David E. shills big time for ZDT in his top 10 (which slotted too early for him to catch Tarantino, LotR Redux, etc.):

It also borders on the politically and morally reprehensible.
It lives on the border quite comfortably (and comfortingly for most I expect).

relieved to see The Deep Blue Sea and Oslo, August 31st on his list.

I like them both -- and they're getting overrated.

Um, balls? The Louis Malle version of Oslo (The Fire Within) from the '60s is the masterpiece.

I know it well but TFW's superiority doesn't affect my enjoyment of this one.

anyway these two are the kind of modest things that should dominate top tens instead of Oscaryums.

...but DE's top 3 are all trophy horses.
I made my master list in progress last night, I've only seen 66 new films. Can probably get to 90.
― saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 December 2012 14:53 (eleven years ago) link
Hovering around 90 right now. Should be able to top 100 by year's end no sweat.
― Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 15:09 (eleven years ago) link
Was going to balk over Amour being tagged a "trophy horse," but I guess at this point, it's leading the pack in accolades (just the earlier-in-the-year, non-detriusy ones).

Best First Feature: How To Survive a Plague
― Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 15:58 (eleven years ago) link
(Docs didn't use to be eligible for this category, but the rules have changed.)
― Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:00 (eleven years ago) link
I watched Plague Friday night, and it is a more narratively focused (and conventional) doc than Jim Hubbard's United in Anger: A History of ACT UP, which I saw the next day at MoMA (it uses much of the same archival footage).
― saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:09 (eleven years ago) link
@gemkoI admittedly didn't see the entire film, but what I did see in no way suggested talent beyond simple assemblage.
@gemkoTo put it another way, I can't imagine somebody else's film on the same subject being radically different.

Best Nonfiction Film: The Central Park Five
― Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:25 (eleven years ago) link
Sicinski says "The current parallel doc, UNITED IN ANGER, based on clips I've seen, is hyper-conventional. PLAGUE shows what it's like to act and organize from inside panic and confusion, to be *on* the shifting terrain."
― Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:26 (eleven years ago) link
"hyper" is a bit much. It does point out the obvious that in addition to intense and panic-stricken, ACT UP meetings were cruisy.
and I expected this:
Best Non-Fiction Film (Documentary): "The Central Park Five"

I mean, yeah, there's no Tree of Life out there this year to decimate all comers, but ... ?
