the master, really

David E. shills big time for ZDT in his top 10 (which slotted too early for him to catch Tarantino, LotR Redux, etc.):

It also borders on the politically and morally reprehensible.

It lives on the border quite comfortably (and comfortingly for most I expect).

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 December 2012 14:37 (eleven years ago) link

relieved to see The Deep Blue Sea and Oslo, August 31st on his list.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 3 December 2012 14:39 (eleven years ago) link

I like them both -- and they're getting overrated.

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 December 2012 14:39 (eleven years ago) link

and you're getting Armond.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 3 December 2012 14:40 (eleven years ago) link

Um, balls? The Louis Malle version of Oslo (The Fire Within) from the '60s is the masterpiece.

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 December 2012 14:43 (eleven years ago) link

I know it well but TFW's superiority doesn't affect my enjoyment of this one.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 3 December 2012 14:48 (eleven years ago) link

anyway these two are the kind of modest things that should dominate top tens instead of Oscaryums.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 3 December 2012 14:49 (eleven years ago) link

...but DE's top 3 are all trophy horses.

I made my master list in progress last night, I've only seen 66 new films. Can probably get to 90.

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 December 2012 14:53 (eleven years ago) link

Hovering around 90 right now. Should be able to top 100 by year's end no sweat.

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 15:09 (eleven years ago) link

Was going to balk over Amour being tagged a "trophy horse," but I guess at this point, it's leading the pack in accolades (just the earlier-in-the-year, non-detriusy ones).

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 15:10 (eleven years ago) link

plus the Euros

i think the Wells blog quoted some Hollywood type that it's "On Golden Pond directed by Hitler."

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 December 2012 15:13 (eleven years ago) link

That's less Oscar bait and more John Waters bait.

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 15:14 (eleven years ago) link

I'll change my tune if it manages a NYFCC win for picture (not just foreign) this morning.

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 15:17 (eleven years ago) link

where are the pajama people, ie Natl Board of Review?

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 December 2012 15:19 (eleven years ago) link

Guess they overextended their nap and aren't first out of the gate this year.

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 15:20 (eleven years ago) link

Goes without saying this will likely be a vital twitter feed this morning: https://twitter.com/ArmondWhite

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 15:21 (eleven years ago) link

Evidently a for real ballot? http://kylesmithonline.com/?p=9947

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 15:33 (eleven years ago) link

Let the molasses-drip rollout begin:

http://www.nyfcc.com/awards/

Best First Feature: How To Survive a Plague

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 15:58 (eleven years ago) link

(Docs didn't use to be eligible for this category, but the rules have changed.)

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:00 (eleven years ago) link

I watched Plague Friday night, and it is a more narratively focused (and conventional) doc than Jim Hubbard's United in Anger: A History of ACT UP, which I saw the next day at MoMA (it uses much of the same archival footage).

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:09 (eleven years ago) link

@gemko
I admittedly didn't see the entire film, but what I did see in no way suggested talent beyond simple assemblage.

@gemko
To put it another way, I can't imagine somebody else's film on the same subject being radically different.

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:11 (eleven years ago) link

who the f is that?

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:12 (eleven years ago) link

(MD'A)

Everyone sez this is basically a "fuck you" to Beasts, but now watch that one win best screenplay or something.

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:14 (eleven years ago) link

Kyle Smith ballot shows that you could fake your way through these votes by seeing 8 hyped films a year.

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:15 (eleven years ago) link

(Meanwhile in who cares news: http://www.deadline.com/2012/12/2012-annie-award-nominations/)

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:18 (eleven years ago) link

Now this is getting weird.

Best Nonfiction Film: The Central Park Five

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:25 (eleven years ago) link

Sicinski says "The current parallel doc, UNITED IN ANGER, based on clips I've seen, is hyper-conventional. PLAGUE shows what it's like to act and organize from inside panic and confusion, to be *on* the shifting terrain."

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:26 (eleven years ago) link

"hyper" is a bit much. It does point out the obvious that in addition to intense and panic-stricken, ACT UP meetings were cruisy.

and I expected this:

Best Non-Fiction Film (Documentary): "The Central Park Five"

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:29 (eleven years ago) link

I mean, yeah, there's no Tree of Life out there this year to decimate all comers, but ... ?

Best Cinematography: Greig Fraser, Zero Dark Thirty

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:50 (eleven years ago) link

Slant Magazine ‏@Slant_Magazine
Zero Dark Thirty (@ZeroDarkThirty) will sweep at #NYFCC, then the Oscars. Trust us.

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:55 (eleven years ago) link

did he work for the Romney campaign

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:57 (eleven years ago) link

Something's gotta break the logjam at the top of that category, and I doubt it's going to be Les Miz.

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:58 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, I see which Obama film they're going for.

Dem crix are embracing their gung ho side at last

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:59 (eleven years ago) link

Best. Election. Year. Ever.

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:59 (eleven years ago) link

You deserve it. this is how democracy dies, etc

Imagine if the studio had gotten its way and called ZDT For God and Country.

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 December 2012 17:03 (eleven years ago) link

God, I hate Sasha Stone, but I can't stop following her on Twitter b/c she's a Voice in the Conversation.

Sax Blatterday (jaymc), Monday, 3 December 2012 17:07 (eleven years ago) link

I can't wait to waterboard you, Morbs.

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 17:07 (eleven years ago) link

get in line

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 December 2012 17:09 (eleven years ago) link

SS's desperate attempts to assign some form of Nate Silver-like patternism on showbiz awards is often funny. More often sad.

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 17:10 (eleven years ago) link

at least this election that doesn't change a thing doesn't cost $6B.

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 December 2012 17:12 (eleven years ago) link

The Hobbit should be so frugal.

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 17:14 (eleven years ago) link

Poor Ann Dowd.

Best Supporting Actress: Sally Field, Lincoln

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 17:23 (eleven years ago) link

coming up, Prettiest Interrogator

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 December 2012 17:25 (eleven years ago) link

@gemko
Aaaaaaaaand now I want to cull the NYFCC roster with a scythe, as usual.

Bobby Ken Doll (Eric H.), Monday, 3 December 2012 17:29 (eleven years ago) link

is Nathaniel of The Film Experience hitting "refresh" repeatedly

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 3 December 2012 17:30 (eleven years ago) link

He's not alone.

@derekabowman
The last time I used the refresh button this much was Election Day. Ok, I'm using it more today #nyfcc
