actually... i'm kinda glad they removed the pop out window functionality. i always used it by accidentally double clicking the playlist area.

just figured out you have to open the column sidebar to do that

oh man now I'm ready to burn Apple down to the ground. You can no longer open playlists in their own windows. I spend half my waking hours with multiple playlists open, in windows tiled in different monitors, so I can compare playlists and move songs between them. This is brutal and is really really going to piss me off if they don't put that back. Other people are complaining.

yeah this is huge.

i've been a mac user for all of 3 weeks and it works and it's totally cush and i have no real problem with the new itunes but apple's horizontal monopoly on media management is tighter than i thought. seems like there could be a prosumer library management alternative to itunes out there but it's tumbleweeds as far as i can tell.

Was thinking that too. The problem is syncing w/iPod, which is a must, I'd think.

there are a few lightweight iTunes replacement apps I've checked out in the past, no syncing w/ iPod/Phone but maybe preferable for some.

I'm mostly happy with the changes (other than that big one mentioned above), but I also question the design. It's more "colorful" but kinda "eh". I hope this isn't the result of Ive taking over interface design. I want my software to look like a Braun razor and with no drop shadows. Maybe I just want everything to look like Windows 8, though I've read complaints that they went to far and icons and UX are confusing.

I don't know what the ideal clean/modern/intuitive interface looks like to be honest. Maybe something closer to Abelton Live.

I think I don't like the subte 3d qualities. The gradient shade/glow in the info window for instance, though maybe I'd miss it when i's gone. Meanwhile those fancy arrows that bring up the fancy new pop-up next to the song name just has the same options, minus 1 or 2, as right clicking on them.

I hope this isn't the result of Ive taking over interface design.

I just downloaded 6 itunes alternatives, installed them, saw that they were terrible and didn't have the feature I needed, and deleted them all.

mpd is the true nerd's music player of choice. But it definitely won't manage your iPhone library.

I noticed the lack of gapless playback. Bummer. Also, I can change an mp3 to be an audiobook but not a podcast. When I change the file type nothing happens.

new itunes. Gapless playback has disappeared from the options tab. Totally sucks ass.

SUPPOSEDLY the only thing that checkbox ever did was override whatever setting you had for crossfading between tracks. so if you don't have itunes crossfade normally you should be fine. there's an article about it somewhere.

Hm. Basically all I care about is whether e.g. the transition from the 2nd to the 3rd movement of the Beethoven "waldstein" sonata will still play without a gap, even if I can't tell itunes via that check box that those tracks are gapless.

T-Mobile USA just announced they'll finally be selling the iPhone and iPad at some unspecified time in 2013. They've been busy moving their reasonably fast HSPA+ network to frequencies the iPhone can use over the last year, and will start rolling out their LTE network next year as well.

I think gapless playback is still there, there's just an option missing in one of the menus

Stepping back a couple of days:

I think the answer was to go to the little magnifying glass and switch search from "Entire Library" to "All". This appears to make search work like it used to, and is definitely improved my performance on an external drive

This doesn't seem to work since it was already set to both those, "Entire Library" AND "All." So...hmm.

Again, for those wondering: I am trying to determine why iTunes essentially locks up on me when trying to do a search when my actual library file is only 85 MB, but the music itself is located on an external drive.

click on "entire Library" again. It will deselct it.

In my experience, if you quit itunes you have to do it again. It wants desperately for you to use its slowass spotlight wannabee searching.

Here's a probably stupid question from a tech-challenged ilxor named me.

Can the iPad communicate with a thumb drive/small ext hard drive without a proper computer being involved in the transaction?

(i don't own one, just contemplating it)

If you're wondering "hey how come my podcasts stopped updating?", the answer is that new iTunes turns off updates for podcasts you haven't listened to for awhile, so you have to manually go into each podcast and see if it's turned off. Not sure how to globally turn that feature off.

the old itunes did the same thing, but it put an exclamation next to the podcast name in the list
