do people who don't like sports really get talked at about sports that much, or at all really

i don't mean "talked to at all" i mean "talked to about sports at all" but if you're wearing a fedora or a my little pony shirt all bets are off i guess

No, seriously, this does happen a lot. Usually when you're in the company of more than one other person, but it does happen frequently.

moneyball turned modern sports talk into something i imagine is now insufferable to old-timer sports fans.

Well, yeah, that's why I said the second sentence, b/c it happens more to me as a third wheel. But then, I've not been in a work environment for a while, last time I was it was very much a terrible cliched situation of people only ever talking about sports or babies.

i'm introverted and i lack a fundamental understanding of whatever brainwave makes people start talking about sports with people who have never shown an interest in sports

there are just generally a lot of people who will talk your ear off about their pet interest whether or not you share their passion for it

All I ever hear in my office is fucking football nonsense. 365 days a year. IN CLEVELAND.
I always try to get in little digs, though. Last time the NFL draft came up, I needled the worst offender constantly about his endless draft talk. "Unless you are actually in the draft or own a football team, you're kind of crazy to give a shit about this and even crazier to watch it on TV" etc.

"unless you're actually in your favorite band you're kind of crazy to give a shit that they're currently in the studio recording a new album"

gr80 otm. Forgive people their passions, such that you may care about something. Even if you feel not the need to vocalize.
― mh, Thursday, 13 December 2012 03:22 (eleven years ago) link
You'd have to know this guy and see how apeshit he goes over the idea of anyone not caring about football to get it. Obviously I understand that people have different interests. That's why I said "digs" rather than "serious observations."

ok yeah thats obnoxious.
personally i love:
1) food/eating2) watching/occasionally playing sports
but talking about them with friends and strangers and on blogs and message boards is the worst shit ever.

see the good thing about talking about sports w/ people, esp people at work, is that it means you don't have to be talking about something else with them

I have a bunch of friends and acquaintances who are huge baseball nerds and they all at some point expressed disappointment when they realized that I know and care nothing about baseball. But I love when any two of them somehow cross paths for the first time and five minutes later they're all into it and talking shit to each other, like I was some sort of matchmaker.
― joygoat, Thursday, 13 December 2012 06:27 (eleven years ago) link
there's all sorts of peripheral ways to be interested in baseball without actually being interested in baseball. the whole nate silver thing, how that logo to that one team looks like "elb", etc...

Sports is one of those ubiquitous things about which it feels like taking a stance if you just don't want to give a fuck. I don't want to take a stance on sports.
I want to maybe go to an outdoor baseball game, especially if it is minor league and it has people doing stupid crap in costumes and there are fireworks afterward and the beer and dogs are a little cheaper. I like occasionally "watching" football at a bar with friends or family. I like going to college basketball games. I like not knowing the names or personalities or skills of any of these players, until the moment I'm at the game, and I can ask the nerd next to me about all this special type of nerdy information that dudes talk about in their bro voice. And it's all good.
― SHUT UP AND GET YOUR TURKEY SCIENCE BOOKS (Austerity Ponies), Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:22 (eleven years ago) link
well the important thing is that you don't really have to take a sophisticated stance, in fact work conversations actually get awkward if you know too much about sports, you just have to have vague opinions on things
― iatee, Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:24 (eleven years ago) link
that is so otm. don't try to disabuse work ppl of their talk radio sports opinions.
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:29 (eleven years ago) link
even tho i enjoy talking about sports, or at least those i am interested in, i can definitely empathize as i have fraudulently mugged along in many a baseball conversation and it blows both to do so and in particular to feel like you have to do so.
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:32 (eleven years ago) link
There are very few things I'm really interested in nerding out about in person. I'd rather someone talk in general terms enthusiastically about something they're passionate about and have it explained to me?
― mh, Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:33 (eleven years ago) link
it's important to remember that the average person talking about football doesn't even completely understand the rules of football
― iatee, Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:33 (eleven years ago) link
all you need to do to talk about sports is read 2 articles from any sports section of any paper, and just repeat what they say. thats really all that most sports fans are doing
― max, Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:40 (eleven years ago) link
