All I ever hear in my office is fucking football nonsense. 365 days a year. IN CLEVELAND.
I always try to get in little digs, though. Last time the NFL draft came up, I needled the worst offender constantly about his endless draft talk. "Unless you are actually in the draft or own a football team, you're kind of crazy to give a shit about this and even crazier to watch it on TV" etc.

"unless you're actually in your favorite band you're kind of crazy to give a shit that they're currently in the studio recording a new album"

Fantasy LEAGUES. He also does fantasy basketball.

gr80 otm. Forgive people their passions, such that you may care about something. Even if you feel not the need to vocalize.
― mh, Thursday, 13 December 2012 03:22 (eleven years ago) link
You'd have to know this guy and see how apeshit he goes over the idea of anyone not caring about football to get it. Obviously I understand that people have different interests. That's why I said "digs" rather than "serious observations."

ok yeah thats obnoxious.
personally i love:
1) food/eating2) watching/occasionally playing sports
but talking about them with friends and strangers and on blogs and message boards is the worst shit ever.

see the good thing about talking about sports w/ people, esp people at work, is that it means you don't have to be talking about something else with them

depends on the office tbh
I honestly look at 'talking about sports at work' as almost a social obligation I'm performing, it is one step away from talking about the weather

I have a bunch of friends and acquaintances who are huge baseball nerds and they all at some point expressed disappointment when they realized that I know and care nothing about baseball. But I love when any two of them somehow cross paths for the first time and five minutes later they're all into it and talking shit to each other, like I was some sort of matchmaker.
― joygoat, Thursday, 13 December 2012 06:27 (eleven years ago) link
there's all sorts of peripheral ways to be interested in baseball without actually being interested in baseball. the whole nate silver thing, how that logo to that one team looks like "elb", etc...

Sports is one of those ubiquitous things about which it feels like taking a stance if you just don't want to give a fuck. I don't want to take a stance on sports.
I want to maybe go to an outdoor baseball game, especially if it is minor league and it has people doing stupid crap in costumes and there are fireworks afterward and the beer and dogs are a little cheaper. I like occasionally "watching" football at a bar with friends or family. I like going to college basketball games. I like not knowing the names or personalities or skills of any of these players, until the moment I'm at the game, and I can ask the nerd next to me about all this special type of nerdy information that dudes talk about in their bro voice. And it's all good.
― SHUT UP AND GET YOUR TURKEY SCIENCE BOOKS (Austerity Ponies), Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:22 (eleven years ago) link
well the important thing is that you don't really have to take a sophisticated stance, in fact work conversations actually get awkward if you know too much about sports, you just have to have vague opinions on things
― iatee, Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:24 (eleven years ago) link
that is so otm. don't try to disabuse work ppl of their talk radio sports opinions.
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:29 (eleven years ago) link
even tho i enjoy talking about sports, or at least those i am interested in, i can definitely empathize as i have fraudulently mugged along in many a baseball conversation and it blows both to do so and in particular to feel like you have to do so.
― Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:32 (eleven years ago) link
There are very few things I'm really interested in nerding out about in person. I'd rather someone talk in general terms enthusiastically about something they're passionate about and have it explained to me?
― mh, Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:33 (eleven years ago) link
it's important to remember that the average person talking about football doesn't even completely understand the rules of football
― iatee, Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:33 (eleven years ago) link
all you need to do to talk about sports is read 2 articles from any sports section of any paper, and just repeat what they say. thats really all that most sports fans are doing
― max, Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:40 (eleven years ago) link
yeah sports is exactly like politics in that regard
― iatee, Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:42 (eleven years ago) link
don't forget sports talk radio, it is key to the mindset
― mh, Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:44 (eleven years ago) link
sports chat is about a half step above when two co-workers pass in the hall and say "hey, how are you?" "good, and youself?". neither of them gives a fuck. sports fills the dead space between people who don't want to be there together. or between people who are excruciatingly boring and have not explored the world beyond what's been handed to them ... and wtf do you want w/ them anyway.
― Spectrum, Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:57 (eleven years ago) link
Sports are so incredibly boring unless you are playing them yourself. Televised games function as ambiance for me to take a nap to.

Baseball games are great when you treat them like a picnic. Rooting for the Nats during the playoffs was way more stressful and reminded me that I don't actually like getting invested in sports at all.
― wongo hulkington's jade palace late night buffet (silby), Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:10 (eleven years ago) link
I like going to this bar where the bartender really knows baseball from having played it. His commentary on the game makes it about twenty times better.
― mh, Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:11 (eleven years ago) link
yeah, sports are fun to watch, probably about the same as being a crank. whenever i'm about to get into sports I'm always afraid I'll get -too- into them ... don't know how much people who like sports actually like sports or just can't find anything better to be interested in.

― iatee, Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:20 (eleven years ago) link
I don't dislike sports, and I go to my share of baseball games and watch football and b-ball occasionally on TV and whatever, but I'm not INTO SPORTS (esp. football) like these office dudes are. Like I couldn't give fewer shits who is pursuing whom in the draft or whether the offensive coordinator should be doing X or why they're starting Y when he only had 30 rushing yards or w/e. I just want to watch the game.
College sports, though, GTFO. Especially if you didn't even go to the college in question. Like aforementioned dude getting really into Michigan simply because they're the big OSU rival, and he went to Ohio U., so anything that makes OSU fans miserable is now cool and, you know, just stop it.
