bar mitzvah kid was good, also.

I believe that the purpose of the gyno sketch was to break Bill Hader. Can't have another Stefon appearance so soon? Translate the same idea to a new setting!
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 16 December 2012 18:36 (eleven years ago) link
my fav sketch of the night was the weird 'old friends' thing w/ Martin Short and Fred Armisen -- can easily get annoyed with both of those guys but it was fun to see them play off of each other in a way that utilized each guy's unique weirdness

see if i was someone like SLJ and i was just hanging out at SNL and they wanted to put me in a sketch, i'd drop the f-bomb on purpose, and write a check for whatever the fine would be before even leaving the building

this is kind of a fun article but this will always be the definitive 10-to-one SNL sketch for me: http://snltranscripts.jt.org/97/97pbible.phtml

god that sketch was bombing with the audience but it was so fucking funny
― joint keefs of staff (m bison), Wednesday, 16 January 2013 21:01 (eleven years ago) link
oddly i didn't even remember that will ferrell was in that sketch, in my memory it was just tim meadows as a lone shirtless bible salesman. but i do remember catching it at the end of the show and just being like "..."
― congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 16 January 2013 21:06 (eleven years ago) link
I had never seen that one, the writing is just totally bizarre.
Here's one with no writing at all, I still bring this up almost 25 years later.

I had never seen this one until someone mentioned it in the comments of that AV Club piece. Sudeikis and Forte always go all in, love those guys.

― Gollum: "Hot, Ready and Smeagol!" (Phil D.), Thursday, 17 January 2013 02:44 (eleven years ago) link
Ohhh, yeah, the potato chip sketch was a great one. Will Ferrell (and Adam McKay) dominated the 10-to-1 back in the day: the bad doctor sketches, TGI Friday, Ride The Snake.
― (hcnuL dlO) * (Old Lunch), Thursday, 17 January 2013 11:12 (eleven years ago) link
SNL should seriously put out a 10-to-1 compilation DVD. Those tend to be the sketches I point SNL haters towards.

jesus i'd never seen that. dying!
― goole, Thursday, 17 January 2013 18:43 (eleven years ago) link
I had to watch it again just to see how many ways Will Forte pronounced "potato." Blake Lively is surprisingly game there, too.
― Gollum: "Hot, Ready and Smeagol!" (Phil D.), Thursday, 17 January 2013 18:45 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah, as one of the commenters noted, for Lively to not completely break as Forte goes more and more ballistic is really quite something.

I don't know what's going on in this high school sketch - is it a Glee reference? - but I can't stop laughing at the sound of Hader's voice.
― boxall, Sunday, 27 January 2013 05:01 (eleven years ago) link
every sketch is abt gay ppl / double polo, popped collars or both

the firefighter sketch was sort of great. just letting hader chew scenery.

I'm on a dvr delay, so I just now noticed this Lonely Island track in the digital short is built on a Joy Formidable sample.

sadface at Kendrick, he sounded super tired to me
― Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Sunday, 27 January 2013 16:46 (eleven years ago) link
i thought this episode (with a few exceptions) had a lot of genuinely funny sketches, and also i thought kendrick lamar (and his band) was super fun to watch. dunno why i am so enthusiastic about it, but i enjoyed it enough to look for this thread and say i liked it.

kendrick and the band sounded good by snl sound standards. much better than heyho last week.

Adam Levine was surprisingly competent. I liked his Nev impression in the Catfish sketch.
― Ulna (Nicole), Sunday, 27 January 2013 17:52 (eleven years ago) link
Not having seen the Catfish film or show, I assumed it was competent anyway just because it's MTV.
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 27 January 2013 18:09 (eleven years ago) link
His faux modest beefcake schtick was more palatable (even funny) than I expected it to be considering how unbearable his music is.
― this customer is a jerk (La Lechera), Sunday, 27 January 2013 18:12 (eleven years ago) link
I was sad when he dissed Kara's Flowers. ;_;
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 27 January 2013 18:14 (eleven years ago) link
Levine seemed to have the right comic persona, but pauses in his line delivery made some sketches awkward
― Garth Brooks In ... The Life of (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 27 January 2013 18:20 (eleven years ago) link
I didn't even realize Catfish was a parody. I was also upset Adam dissed Kara's Flowers. Soap Disco! That was a fun song.

"Poetic Justice" sounded great but that's my least favorite song on the album
― Bel-Air the Fresh Prince, sitting in a chair (DJP), Sunday, 27 January 2013 19:23 (eleven years ago) link
The Nev from Catfish impersonation was dead on and hilarious

Loved this. This character should be the next SNL movie, just Hader yelling "SHUT UP!" in that voice for 90 minutes.

I'm with Dan on that one. All the gay character skits were middle school humor formulaic.

yeah, some of those skits seemed irresponsibly bad to me.
