Do you take drugs? Why?

No. I don't like smoking, I don't like feeling slow and dumb and sitting around like a lamer because I am a cheapskate and can do that without fcuking my throat up with wacky backy. Ooonly too well. Unless I am very, very drunk. And I rarely get offered anything else INTERESTING. Poppers are amusing for about 5 minutes (mmmmm RUSHIN!) but due to fast heartbeat fear do not do them often. I have never had good speed EVAH. Also, because I HATE! lots of things, I also HATE! people who write novels about early 90s drug/rave culture therefore HATE! people who boast about the damn great times they had off their trolleys whilst listening to I dunno, HADDAWAY. Yaaaaaaaaawwn.

Rescue Remedy is best.

Sarah, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

NB I am not dissing HADDAWAY.

baby dont hurt them, no more.

Ronan, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

There are few things more boring than listening to people talk about their nights out, whatever the hell they were doing, alcohol, e, whatever. Unless you were there in which case it can be funny and interesting but otherwise, no.

Ronan, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

geoff, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

OK, let me quantify my waste of money statement again: I would rather spend money on other things like cd's and occasionally alcohol and whatever else may come up. Think it's a waste of money because I see my friends fritter it away a lot of the time just on skunk. And I don't like it/don't smoke (I'm sorry that must be a side-effect of smoking too much hash hello my brother who says 'I smoke when I don't have any but it doesn't mean I have to' hmmm.)/ and I'm scared, especially after when I mixed just dope and anti-depressants and felt horrible for a while.
But I don't mind other people doing them, really. It's a free world. Honest.

Bill, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't take drugs (besides alcohol and cigarettes) mainly because no one ever offered them to me when I was young, and I feel too old to start taking them now.

rosemary, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I like Rosemary's reason. That's been the case w/me and many drugs. I drink of course. I used to smoke out (get high, whatever) about once a week but my asthma's been so bad lately I'm just "pass" no puff, puff.

I'll do coke about once a month. Rarely buy it though. Usually a friend has some and shares in exchange for drinks or something. On the rare occassion that I buy it and stay up all night doing it much fun will be had but the next day is complete crap as I recover. The thought of the day after causes enough pause to usually keep me from doing it.

Have done speed a few times. Don't like it due to bad childhood associations. would never shoot up or do herion. Would like some caps or hash if I could find them. Love valiums. hmm.

Samantha, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

aw you're never too old. last "proper" party i went to had a couple of people my age taking (pretty poor) stuff for the first time. it's a lovely sight to see. so much grinning and "aw, is it your first time" and "this is SO fucking great". still... no pressure.

Alan Trewartha, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Only when above the Mason-Dixon line.

Sonic Boom, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Due to parental overindulgence, drugs, smokes, coffee & alcohol have really bad associations for me, so I never have done any of them. Hey, it's a wonder I breathe oxygen, considering my dad did it!

My reasons why not are probably as much rationalizations (arrived at after I made the decision) as anything else -- stinky smells, users horribly boring when they go on about it, interferes with decision- making, easy way to get in more trouble than intended, etc. I'll never lecture anybody that *they* shouldn't do what they do, but I'd rather not be in the room when it happens (embarrassing panic attack often ensues). If that happens, I wind up feeling hideously guilty for weeks. What fun!

Layna, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

the amount some of my friends and especially my brother spend on cannabis bewilders me, only for them to become useless giggling, lethargic messes

This sort of weirdly assumes that the point of drugs is to make people more entertaining to you. But general points:

(a) Bashing drugs based on the people who use them is a lot like bashing a band based on its fans. (AC/DC fans are by and large suck- monkeys, yes, and yet most ILMers are still fine with the music itself.)

(b) It's difficult to talk about "drugs" in general, since there are a lot of different ones and a lot of different ways to use them. Doing coke every weekend or pulling bong hits before going to work . . . these are entirely different things than smoking a solitary joint on a Saturday afternoon and doing a little reading. So I suppose I'm saying:

(c) Using non-ridiculous drugs the way the average person uses alcohol -- i.e., in appropriate settings, at appropriate times, and not to the extent that the actual business of living gets interrupted -- strikes me as a perfectly reasonable thing to do. So feel free to make fun of High Times subscribers, but don't generalize too much.

Nitsuh, Monday, 3 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Active people, in my idea, don't need drugs. Taking drugs means doing fuck all. Some people are cut out for that.

Simon, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

ganja everyday, never do anything else. EVER.

chaki, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

You never do anything but SMOKE WEED? Maybe Simon was right!

turner, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Nitsuh: What I was getting at is that my brother was probably taking bong hits more than hourly at times recently. And, I wasn't trying to say they were entertaining to me, more that (to the extent I've seen with a few people) they look a complete mess i.e. not a good thing. But agree that at appropriate times with responsibility it's all fine.

Bill, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

very moderate use of marijuana, ecstasy, LSD and mushrooms between the ages of 12 and 21 is beneficial. psychedelics no good after that, pot no better or worse than beer.

fritz, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Only alcohol. I think I am probably afraid of everything else incase I get too happy and kill myself.

Ally C, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i dont do drugs cos i am scared of them.

by drugs i mean not alcohol. i was scared of that till i was 16, and realised i could hold out against my cider swilling clssmates no longer, if i wanted to retain any sort of a social life, or maintain any sort of social contact at all. remember ranting to my mum "i dont WANT to start drinking! its not fair! why should I! etc etc".

then i bit the bullet.

ambrose, Tuesday, 4 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I drink pretty regularly. Once in awhile somebody offers me some coke or speed. Every so often I accept. I stopped taking most everything else about ten years ago. I wish it hadn't take me so long to realize how little I got out of my drug experiences, how far removed it was from the fantasies I had reading High Times under the covers as a teen. Someday I'd like to take heroin again for kicks, but I'm sure as hell not gonna go out and cop myself.

Arthur, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Only alcohol

Alcohol's not a drug, it's a drink.

Nick, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

There's one word for that and it's denial.

RickyT, Wednesday, 5 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Think it's a waste of money because I see my friends fritter it away a lot of the time just on skunk.
Waste of time/money: it's all relative. Most would consider buying CDs of *crap* music a waste of money (and a waste of time listening to'em). But yeah you are right. I think one of the (other) reasons (besides not being offered) is seeing a family friend deteriorating due to coke/alcohol/... usage. Not being offered drugs is of course silly: if I really wanted to use drugs, I would just go out 'n' buy'em. But I never have and most probably never will.

I've paid for drugs exactly once, about 6 dollars for two e's in Prague. But I've done plenty of drugs. Once you start offering your drugs to other people you've probably used way too many.

I took a lot of drugs between the ages of 16-20 and had lots of bad experiences. pot, coke, acid, shrooms, mescaline, ecstacy. Haven't touched any of them in 8 years. I continued drinking and smoking though but have drastically cut down on the drinking.

As always, Nitsuh is so OTM.

Don't knock it until you've tried it. You are never too old for occasional recreational drug use (should the appropriate occasion present itself)

smee (smee), Monday, 3 February 2003 16:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

cigarettes - yes, still.
alcohol - yes, but infrequent due to lack of friends to socialize with.
marijuana - sporadically. the first few times I smoked, I had some very strange experiences. The last few times have been more uneventful. Marijuana makes me incredibly selfish now. All I want to do is listen to Bukem and play video games. I can't imagine that I am any fun to be around while stoned.
others - depending on which "other"; never or not yet.

In general I am very careful for a number of reasosn. I have alcoholic relatives. Some of my best freinds have messed up their lives. Some of my best friends have friends who have OD'ed and died.

aside from the occasional alcoholic or caffeinated drink, i try to avoid any real chemical intake whether narcotic or pharmaceutical.

why? i like myself the way i am. i see no reason to alter my reality/behavior/judgement chemically.

Used to smoke a little pot; then way too much pot; then tried to occasionally smoke a little again, but it wasn't any good. Now I haven't smoked anything for a few years. With my allergies and sensitive sinuses, it was really a stupid thing to do to begin with, though I'll never know whether or not my couple of pot-head years actually may have helped me get through a time I might otherwise not have gotten through.

Occasional alcohol. Would consider trying more psychedelics somewhere down the line, but no plans.

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 3 February 2003 17:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

Haven't smoked pot in years.

Had periods of my life involving heavy social drinking, but currently have the tolerance of an infant; half a beer and I'm ready to fall asleep.

Never tried any other recreational drugs. To be honest, I'm probably too skittish (not to mention too old) for most of 'em.

I do like caffeine, and sometimes I take Benadryl for allergies.

two weeks pass...
Before I read this, I figured almost everyone had smoked herb previously or would still do so sporadically. Is it just the area where I live (Chicago)?
My best friend is a major pothead and for years he tried to convince me that his dad smoked too. I refused to believe him and thought he was crazy, but recently we've got undeniably proof from several sources. I think this may be part of the reason why I think everyone smokes. I was so sure his dad didn't smoke...now I never put it out of the realm of possibilities that someone does.
Plus, I've had so many people I don't know ask me for weed or mention it (gas station attendants, fast food workers, friends' co-workers). This is strange considering that I don't look like a hippie or anything and wasn't even stoned for most of the encounters.
Of the three people with whom I've discussed it with, all three say that nearly everyone at their work partakes in the ganja.
I honestly don't know anyone under 30 who has never smoked it. Hell, I don't know anyone under 30 who hasn't smoked recently. Part of it is the people I hang out with (slacker musicians), but many of the people I'm talking about are not even in my circle of friends.
Even the preppies/jocks when I was in high school did it.

Heh, I yammered on and on about drugs last night on AIM. I occasionally smoke pot, and very rarely (but sometimes) do more than that. I've never tried ecstasy (would), crack (wouldn't) or heroin (wouldn't), but just about everything else I've done at least once.

during the ages of 14-17 i pretty much did everything i could, except for crack. i don't anymore, but pot sometimes makes its way into my life and i tend not to turn it down for all those normal addictive personalities reasons

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

Senior year in high school I smoked pot every day. Almost always after school, but occasionally we'd go out for a toke during lunch. I don't touch it anymore, but more power to anyone that enjoys it. The sanctimonious anti-drug advertising on TV makes me nauseous. I've probably done LSD/mushrooms maybe 10 times, but again no longer have any use for it.

Tried ecstasy a couple times and I enjoyed it. It's been years, but I might consider it again if offered. I still drink way, way too much. It's something I'm trying to work on. Really my favorite thing is painkillers, vicodin, valium, etc. Nice relaxing effect without any hangover. Hard to get though.
