I'm still amazed Lincoln has made $167 million in the U.S. alone (and counting).

he's already had his Oscar night of triumph (one more than Hitchcock) w/ Schindler's List, and possibly will win director again as he did with Ryan.

oh I don't doubt he'll win BD -- but who wouldn't want both?

django is the only one i've seen and it sucked. all of these look terrible except maybe zero dark thirty or lincoln, but biopics/"true stories" are dumb as a genre too.

Of the three I've seen--Amour, Lincoln, ZDT--Lincoln. Also picked that to win in a free-movies-for-a-year thing I filled out the other night.

The only two straight-up very good movies here are Lincoln and ZDT. Everything else is problematic at best.

Only seen Django, want to see Argo and Zero Dark Thirty. Lincoln and Beasts too, though I'm less enthused about those. Otherwise, I can't stand Haneke, Jennifer Lawrence or modern Broadway, so that rules out three films that will most definitely be picking up trophies (for foreign film/possibly actress, most likely actress, and supporting actress, respectively), and though I sometimes like Ang Lee, Life of Pi doesn't interest me in the slightest.

I can't stand Haneke either but trust me Amour is different.

NCFOM was the best BP winner in ages imo

Argo not even getting a director's nom and now being the favourite is still strange to me. Fun to actually root for Lincoln as an underdog though.

a couple weeks ago someone who'd seen 'argo' was asking me for more details about the hostage crisis and i brought up the carter-reagan 'october surprise' theory. she looked at me like i'd just outed myself as a truther.

I think No Country was a legitimate contender for the actual best film of that year, and I think that's the only time in recent memory where the Oscars agreed with me. THL and, if Lincoln were to win, would be two actually good movies that have won which would be a welcome break. The Oscars bar is pretty low.

it's shocking to realize how dreary and instantly forgettable most BP winners have been since 1980 at least. 'schindler' probably deserved it in '94.

I think many have fallen outta love with it, but I still think The Departed is awesome.

It's a lot of fun, but doesn't deserve to be anywhere near an award.

i feel like it being a lot of fun is a lot more than could be said for most BP winners or even nominees in recent times. just looking at a list of nominees from some years makes me nod off.

Yeah, I'll join in and say the NCFOM win was the only time in recent memory I thought the Academy was OTM. What happened to The Master this year? Some too-hot-to-handle Scientology business? Haven't seen the movie, but assumed it was a shoe-in for a BP nom.

I get that the whole consolation Oscar thing pissed ppl off, but I'd even defend the film as a worthy BP winner. Also, remember when that same year Little Muss Sunshine was thought to be a credible front runner?

If I felt Academy voters went for it just because it was a blast I'd be cool with it, but they never vote for fun. They genuinely found some sort of gravitas in it.

The Master had a decidedly mixed reception.

Letters from Iwo Jima was the best of 2007's bp noms, but not picking the Queen, LMS, or fucking Babel makes me a bit thankful for The Departed's win. So glad I wasn't around to watch that year's.
