I'm still amazed Lincoln has made $167 million in the U.S. alone (and counting).

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:17 (eleven years ago) link

he's already had his Oscar night of triumph (one more than Hitchcock) w/ Schindler's List, and possibly will win director again as he did with Ryan.

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:19 (eleven years ago) link

oh I don't doubt he'll win BD -- but who wouldn't want both?

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:20 (eleven years ago) link

Godard?

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 20:26 (eleven years ago) link

But he's not human!

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 21:19 (eleven years ago) link

Beasts of the Southern Wild was on some "Pomplamoose takes on post-Katrina squalor" thing and it made me want to barf.

Lincoln>ZDT>Django>Amour>Life of PI>Silver Linings>Beasts>Argo>Les Mis

Gukbe, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:32 (eleven years ago) link

django is the only one i've seen and it sucked. all of these look terrible except maybe zero dark thirty or lincoln, but biopics/"true stories" are dumb as a genre too.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:35 (eleven years ago) link

neither of those are really biopics

it's kinda debatable how much of a 'true story' ZDT is, lol

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:36 (eleven years ago) link

Of the three I've seen--Amour, Lincoln, ZDT--Lincoln. Also picked that to win in a free-movies-for-a-year thing I filled out the other night.

clemenza, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:47 (eleven years ago) link

The only two straight-up very good movies here are Lincoln and ZDT. Everything else is problematic at best.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:48 (eleven years ago) link

somehow haven't seen a single one of these and i don't really want to see a single one of these

#guy #guy fieri #poop #hallway (zachlyon), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 22:50 (eleven years ago) link

Only seen Django, want to see Argo and Zero Dark Thirty. Lincoln and Beasts too, though I'm less enthused about those. Otherwise, I can't stand Haneke, Jennifer Lawrence or modern Broadway, so that rules out three films that will most definitely be picking up trophies (for foreign film/possibly actress, most likely actress, and supporting actress, respectively), and though I sometimes like Ang Lee, Life of Pi doesn't interest me in the slightest.

Public Brooding Closet (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:17 (eleven years ago) link

I can't stand Haneke either but trust me Amour is different.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 23:18 (eleven years ago) link

Wait, Lincoln is good?!

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:14 (eleven years ago) link

why, Everyone You Know loves it.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:24 (eleven years ago) link

before the Argo juggernault it was swell that Lincoln would have joined Bigelow's other war film as the most decent BP winner of the last fifteen years.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:28 (eleven years ago) link

NCFOM was the best BP winner in ages imo

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:31 (eleven years ago) link

Argo not even getting a director's nom and now being the favourite is still strange to me. Fun to actually root for Lincoln as an underdog though.

Gukbe, Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:31 (eleven years ago) link

a couple weeks ago someone who'd seen 'argo' was asking me for more details about the hostage crisis and i brought up the carter-reagan 'october surprise' theory. she looked at me like i'd just outed myself as a truther.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:32 (eleven years ago) link

even my raving conservative dad thinks the Reagan team fucked Carter over.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:34 (eleven years ago) link

you should have told her the pursuing truck actually got sucked into the jet engine IRL

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:34 (eleven years ago) link

Lincoln would have joined Bigelow's other war film as the most decent BP winner of the last fifteen years

I'll skip my solitary love for American Beauty (back off!), but better than No Country?

clemenza, Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:38 (eleven years ago) link

I think No Country was a legitimate contender for the actual best film of that year, and I think that's the only time in recent memory where the Oscars agreed with me. THL and, if Lincoln were to win, would be two actually good movies that have won which would be a welcome break. The Oscars bar is pretty low.

Gukbe, Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:40 (eleven years ago) link

I forgot about No Country.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:42 (eleven years ago) link

it's shocking to realize how dreary and instantly forgettable most BP winners have been since 1980 at least. 'schindler' probably deserved it in '94.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:44 (eleven years ago) link

uh, 93.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Thursday, 31 January 2013 00:45 (eleven years ago) link

I think many have fallen outta love with it, but I still think The Departed is awesome.

Public Brooding Closet (cryptosicko), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:05 (eleven years ago) link

It's a lot of fun, but doesn't deserve to be anywhere near an award.

Gukbe, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:06 (eleven years ago) link

you are correct~!

xpost

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:06 (eleven years ago) link

i feel like it being a lot of fun is a lot more than could be said for most BP winners or even nominees in recent times. just looking at a list of nominees from some years makes me nod off.

christmas candy bar (al leong), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:07 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, I'll join in and say the NCFOM win was the only time in recent memory I thought the Academy was OTM. What happened to The Master this year? Some too-hot-to-handle Scientology business? Haven't seen the movie, but assumed it was a shoe-in for a BP nom.

circa1916, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:10 (eleven years ago) link

c'mon -- wouldn't you rather watch Out of Africa or The Accidental Tourist

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:10 (eleven years ago) link

I get that the whole consolation Oscar thing pissed ppl off, but I'd even defend the film as a worthy BP winner. Also, remember when that same year Little Muss Sunshine was thought to be a credible front runner?

Public Brooding Closet (cryptosicko), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:10 (eleven years ago) link

i never did do my poll of worst of the 90s best picture noms after the 80s one

let's go do some crimes (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:10 (eleven years ago) link

If I felt Academy voters went for it just because it was a blast I'd be cool with it, but they never vote for fun. They genuinely found some sort of gravitas in it.

The Master had a decidedly mixed reception.

Gukbe, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:11 (eleven years ago) link

I just remembered that I've never actually seen Out of Africa.

Public Brooding Closet (cryptosicko), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:11 (eleven years ago) link

let's go do some crimes (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:12 (eleven years ago) link

I hate it already.

Public Brooding Closet (cryptosicko), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:12 (eleven years ago) link

Letters from Iwo Jima was the best of 2007's bp noms, but not picking the Queen, LMS, or fucking Babel makes me a bit thankful for The Departed's win. So glad I wasn't around to watch that year's.

Gukbe, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:14 (eleven years ago) link

Robert Redford plays a britishes Robert Redford.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:15 (eleven years ago) link

A win for Lincoln would, I suppose, return Oscar to Good Middlebrow Winners.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:16 (eleven years ago) link

I'll take it over The King's Speech and The Artist version of Middlebrow.

Gukbe, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:17 (eleven years ago) link

oh yah

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:20 (eleven years ago) link

Harvey Weinstein just gave an interview where he implied he shoulda made Anderson recut The Master.

Argo not even getting a director's nom and now being the favourite is still strange to me.

There's a theory that's the REASON it became the favorite.

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:25 (eleven years ago) link

Oh I think I read that somewhere. All the actor's pissed that Benji didn't get the directing nod so they're gonna make it best picture? Has a film ever won w/o the directing nomination?

Gukbe, Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:28 (eleven years ago) link

Driving Miss Daisy

saltwater incursion (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 31 January 2013 01:29 (eleven years ago) link

The directors' branch (who nominate the directors) have marginally better taste than the rest of AMPAS.

did you vote for the best here, or the one that starts arguments?

Both.
