especially not in the second episode of the season... way to stay bogged down in old shit instead of pushing fwd
― s1ocki, Sunday, 13 April 2008 01:36 (sixteen years ago) link
I dunno. The bagpipe goodbye was certainly a bit much (BSG loves overlong goodbyes way too much lol), but overall I've enjoyed the two episodes so far.
don't think it's ever recovered from those first scenes of cylons bickering back in late season 2... worst most disappointing reveal ever
I can see that. Taking the mystery away from the Cylons as villains was probably not the best idea. For those who see that as a sticking point, I can see why the show wouldn't be as compelling.
However, for me at least, the mystique factor has been taken up by the mythology behind Earth and the final five, how it all ties to the Lords of Kobol and the origins of humanity, etc. But then again, I'm a nerd, speculating about that back story stuff's my bread and butter.
But I've also always dug the soap opera and INTENSE DRAMA (TM) moments, which maybe aren't to everyone's tastes. I love Adama when he's pissed, and Roslin when she's pissed even more.
Anyway, that's just my view. I'm still enjoying it, at least.

I noticed that Adama fished the ship model out of the trash.
First two episodes so far feel like set-ups for later episodes so there's a lot of foot tapping right now. Loved the ALL OUT SPACE WAR in the first 10 minutes of episode 1 (bored CGI guys sitting around waiting for strike to finish)
It hasn't helped that I just watched the entire season + movie of Firefly/Serenity in the past week w/high quotient of smart-assed violence.

The FX are one thing about the show that unequivocally keep getting better and better.
I'm also with balls (heh) on the Cylon schism. Loved that part, especially the look the centurions gave each other after they shot everybody up.

they should have high-fived, all would have been forgiven.
― s1ocki, Sunday, 13 April 2008 03:03 (sixteen years ago) link
i dunno, the earth stuff is like... ya, earth. great. i already live here. what's the big whoop?
there is like ZERO sense that humanity is in peril and that they're scraping by by their fingernails and the cylons "have a plan" and everything is precarious and holy shit what's gonna happen.
it's starting to feel like any old vancouver-shot sci-fi show. battlestargate sg-1 is more like it.
― s1ocki, Sunday, 13 April 2008 03:05 (sixteen years ago) link
Fair enough, I see what you're saying, the dramatic urgency isn't there with the cylons not busting the humans' asses all the time like the first two seasons. The show's focus has kind of shifted and I can see that it's not as interesting that way for some.
Well for me it's not Earth itself as much as how it connects to the origins of man and the Cylons, but like I said that's nerdy stuff, I can understand not caring about it.
battlestargate sg-1 is more like it.
Oohhhh that's cold. I can definitely understand thinkling it's not what it used to be but I don't think it's reached that nadir just yet.

the final episode they're on earth all gold-plated and jumping in the air

"earth's up, dude!"
― s1ocki, Sunday, 13 April 2008 04:03 (sixteen years ago) link
no srsly i think one of the biggest problems is the show is just re-doing stuff. like the final five cylons plot arc i could not be less hooked on. i felt like we've already been over the "omg i'm a cylon" thing with boomer like 3 seasons ago. and the omg roslin is dying thing. and the big mysterious earth thing i COULD get into but i don't feel like the show's given me any good reason beyond "well i hope they've got something neat up their sleeves." lost is so good at piquing interest in that mythology stuff and compared to that bsg just looks weak.
― s1ocki, Sunday, 13 April 2008 04:06 (sixteen years ago) link
I'll probably watch it all out, but I think they lost it a few episodes after the escape from Nu-Caprica. To me wherever they are going with the four cylons have been totally tacked on to try and wrap things up, I just don't see how they could have planned on Tigh being a Cylon let alone Chief or Anders.
I liked it better when the Cylons had a plan and were just obliterating anything in their path while drinking a latte. If Dean Stockwell and the other Cylons that got wasted are done, I think it was just a way to cut payroll.
― earlnash, Sunday, 13 April 2008 04:21 (sixteen years ago) link
i can see what you're saying. i guess it depends on what one wants out of the show. s'cool.
― latebloomer, Sunday, 13 April 2008 04:46 (sixteen years ago) link
obviously dean stockwell isn't done. they cylon rift adds all kinds of awesomeness to the show. that plus baltar-as-jesus-figure makes this still a quality watch.

I like the earth mystique bits. Wish they'd add a bit more of that. The ep was okay. Racetrack still hot.

― cutty, Sunday, 13 April 2008 12:32 (sixteen years ago) link
A lot of what I dislike about this show right now can be distilled into Col. Tai's meaningful one-eyed glances. It's all deep, foreboding, frantic panic undercut by the dramatic intensity of a crazy old guy screaming at the kids to get off his lawn. On the plus side, I never fail to crack my girlfriend up by growling about the "frakkin' cylons" if we run into electrical problems or commuter traffic...
― forksclovetofu, Sunday, 13 April 2008 14:52 (sixteen years ago) link
it'd be better if you said frakkin' toasters
― s1ocki, Sunday, 13 April 2008 16:55 (sixteen years ago) link
don't have high hopes for the cylon schism. every demystifying cylon squabbling scene is another stake in this show's heart.
― s1ocki, Sunday, 13 April 2008 16:57 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah i had hopes but i'm not really feeling it, tho hopes remain this show right now probably just needs to be more like 'the thing' + more space fighting + hilarious baltar sex scenes
― rrrobyn, Sunday, 13 April 2008 17:50 (sixteen years ago) link
it's just weird that they've made both the humans and cylons kinda confused and aimless.
― s1ocki, Sunday, 13 April 2008 17:52 (sixteen years ago) link
tho kinda reflective of current political times?
― rrrobyn, Sunday, 13 April 2008 17:54 (sixteen years ago) link
maybe
which also makes sense with a faction of cylons revolting and lots of small political groups going on in the fleet doesn't nec make for good tv show tho...

"plus baltar-as-jesus-figure makes this still a quality watch."
That is kind of true, but Baltar is by far the most entertaining character on the show and the actor that plays him is an allstar at being smarmy. I think they could about put him in any situation and that guys smirk would work. They also were playing up a religious angle with him back when they stole the whole a-bomb and the one 6 nuked the ship right before the election.
― earlnash, Sunday, 13 April 2008 21:07 (sixteen years ago) link
still clearing the ground, moneouvring the characters?? otherwise, what happened in this ep: cylon schism/revolt.
― Alan, Sunday, 13 April 2008 21:27 (sixteen years ago) link
^^^could have been done in one episode really
― DG, Sunday, 13 April 2008 21:30 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah, basically once it became clear that the Cylons DON'T actually have a plan some serious tension evaporated. I am not as down on this as s1ocki cuz I am interested in the "origins of humanity" angle and the Baltar lolz but I agree that I'm a little frustrated with the foot-dragging and goodbye scenes and general water-treading.
― Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 April 2008 20:26 (sixteen years ago) link
Can we basically assume that when they get to earth they're going to find either: A) 21st Century us B) 2001-stylee prehistoric cavemen C) a planet of balthars d) a planet of Malkovich's (honestly, this would redeem the last two seasons for me; he is the ONE)
