Soo many choices :D

Been a bit skittish about that sort of stuff since the horrors of the '10 protests so didn't make it over myself.

Appreciate that, got kind of a queasy feeling myself seeing the police getting changed into their crash helmets and whatnot. Don't think that evolved into much of a situation though, but I didn't stick around for long after that. Good turnout, shame some poor bastard had all their files burnt.

Eat everything not too bothered about price, nothing too fancy - won't have long. Amazing fish and chips type place if it exists?

Crackle Box, Monday, 25 March 2013 18:22 (eleven years ago) link

Fish and chips is probably the thing I know least about here, as I don't like it that much. I know the Globe used to do a good pub meal version, but I'm pretty sure they've changed kitchen staff since then.

emil.y, Monday, 25 March 2013 18:30 (eleven years ago) link

this is the place you want: http://www.bardsleys-fishandchips.co.uk/

jabba hands, Monday, 25 March 2013 18:50 (eleven years ago) link

otherwise my usual recommendation is planet india, amazing veggie indian food in what feels a bit like someone's front room.

jabba hands, Monday, 25 March 2013 18:51 (eleven years ago) link

Always preferred the chips at Bankers myself, but that's totally the wrong end of town.

Am probably up for pre-Swans fap & food if anyone else is interested. Trying to think what pubs do half-decent food in Kemptown.

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Monday, 25 March 2013 18:56 (eleven years ago) link

Bardsley’s is really very good for fish, and the chips aren’t too shabby either, you can eat in too. I was away for a couple of years and thought it wasn’t that much better than the places I was going to up north, but I was surprised how good it was.

I’ve had some great food at Planet India in the past, but again not for a couple of years. Someone said it wasn’t that good recently, but I need to try it again myself.

Ginger Dig is probably too expensive for pre-gig food/drinks. Not sure at the moment what’s around that neck of the woods.

Ginger Dog.

Barley Mow

cheers, ginger dog looks nice, saw pics of fish and chips and remembered what a mistake that is most of the time!

rarely get to see the gf so we'll prob do a nice meal together before the gig. afterwards tho... does brighton have a pub/bar that's open late? extra points for good booze and music.

Crackle Box, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 16:47 (eleven years ago) link

Wellll, West Hill is open pretty late, even midweek, music hit and miss depending on who’s in control. There are options.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 26 March 2013 19:07 (eleven years ago) link

Are a few people going to Tenderhooks tomorrow? Should be back after my Welsh adventure and after a change from duf-duf-duf.

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 31 March 2013 17:34 (eleven years ago) link

I mean hookworms. It's been a long weekend.

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 31 March 2013 17:45 (eleven years ago) link

Planning on it, though I'm knackered from last night's gig and going to Bilge Pump tonight, so god knows if my ageing body can handle the full five nights in a row of music I'm supposed to be doing.

emil.y, Sunday, 31 March 2013 18:34 (eleven years ago) link

can't make it to hookworms i'm afraid but did notice that resident had sold out of tickets for it. dunno if they'll have any left on the door or not...

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Sunday, 31 March 2013 20:19 (eleven years ago) link

Ah, yeah, I heard our Stevie was back but I don't think I'd clocked when. Don't think I've heard any Supreme Dicks, will check them out.

emil.y, Sunday, 31 March 2013 23:59 (eleven years ago) link

Err, feeling supremely ropey this morning and have only had a couple if hours sleep. I think yesterday's planning has gone awry already, and all I will be doing tonight is sleep.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 1 April 2013 06:38 (eleven years ago) link

I'm feeling pretty crappy too so gonna skip this one. A shame, as they are really great, but I need to be on reasonable form for Weds. Blargh.

emil.y, Monday, 1 April 2013 18:32 (eleven years ago) link

Ya, you take it steady and hope yr feeling perkier come Wednesday.

Supreme Dicks are perhaps deservedly obscure, but they were originally around in the first part of the nineties and got lumped in with people like the Sun City Girls and Tower Recordings in that they shared that same loose and often rambling approach to making improvised rock music and with fairly nonsensical stream-of-consciousness lyrics to match. Unlike either of those two though, they never really incorporated exotic sounds at all, but just focused on dismantling psychedelic rock in a way that makes me think of them as direct descendents of the Red Crayola. Very slack sounding and somewhat folksy, not really big on tunes but they do okay anyway. Guess it's probably Dylan putting them on?

Anyhow... SWANS

FAP

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 00:21 (eleven years ago) link

Grr, woke up with a head cold today. Let me know where you’re going to be before and I will try and make it for one at least.

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 12:36 (eleven years ago) link

have any of you lot been involved in the Sussex protests? Seems like things are getting a bit hairy...

a similar stunt failed to work with a cow (Merdeyeux), Tuesday, 2 April 2013 12:38 (eleven years ago) link

SWANS FAP: Can't remember what's good down that end of town so I'm going to aim for the Barley Mow at 7-ish if anyone fancies that...

Sussex protests: I'm a member of staff there and have been along to a couple of the protests. Last one I was at looked like it could have turned a bit iffy, but the police seemed mostly happy to observe. That was a week ago though, not sure what's going on now and I'm not on campus today. Has something else happened?

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Tuesday, 2 April 2013 14:36 (eleven years ago) link

Ah okay, have just seen that the police and bailiffs have closed down the occupation. Did think they might have timed that for today while campus was pretty much shut down for Easter with only a minimal staff presence and no students around.

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Tuesday, 2 April 2013 14:41 (eleven years ago) link

xp "riot vans on campus earlier and various bits of electricity/lighting shut down around the building" from my source.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 2 April 2013 14:42 (eleven years ago) link

Was doomed to end that way unfortunately. Thought the national protest at Sussex last week was a good way to go to put pressure on the management, but that ended with a bit property getting trashed and some doors getting broken. Since that the university's basically trying to totally close down any on-campus activity and is using the damage to justify it.

Meanwhile I just popped inside to fetch something and a bird has shat on the rim of my coffee mug. Not sure if any went in, it will be alright won't it?

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Tuesday, 2 April 2013 14:57 (eleven years ago) link

Hmmm, looks too good to waste

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Tuesday, 2 April 2013 14:58 (eleven years ago) link

Holy shit, some of these twitter photos are grim :(

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Tuesday, 2 April 2013 15:02 (eleven years ago) link

Can anyone point me to a good writeup of the policies that led to the protests in the first place?

bananas are my preference (seandalai), Tuesday, 2 April 2013 15:32 (eleven years ago) link

We had a similar occupation when I was a student at Sussex 25 years ago. Now I feel old :(

my father will guide me up the stairs to bed (anagram), Tuesday, 2 April 2013 15:38 (eleven years ago) link

Slight;y drunken guy typing on internet here, but emily: your lot were really good tonight! Songs were great, performance was really fun too, and I truly fucking love love love the sound of the fiddle in that context. Reminded me of just the best things i.e. King Of the Slums and also the June Brides. Unreal that that was just your first gig, cos you lot smashed it imo.

Wasn't too nuts about that Lou Barlow gone mewling man-baby thing that came on afterwards mind you, kind of brought out my inner Herod, but otoh the headliners were pretty good, so yeah, that was a fun evening.

Matt, dunno what happened to you but are you still alive?

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 23:42 (eleven years ago) link

Hey, alive, but hitting it hard with Charlie after Swans last night didn’t do a great deal for my cold, so decided I had to stay in and recover. Sent my apologies in advance to Emily.

Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 3 April 2013 23:49 (eleven years ago) link

One look through that front door and I just knew there was no hope in coming out alive, think I probably did a good thing bailing. Hope yr feeling a bit brighter tomorrow anyhow.

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Wednesday, 3 April 2013 23:59 (eleven years ago) link

Aw, thanks so much Nick. Sorry that I ended up buzzing around so much and not really getting a chance to chat. Max is very divisive, I fucking love him and think he's an absolute genius, but he's not for everyone, it is true.

emil.y, Thursday, 4 April 2013 02:51 (eleven years ago) link

hey no worries! gosh i was a bit strident on the cats guy last night eh? aiieee

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Thursday, 4 April 2013 10:18 (eleven years ago) link

Good to see you guys - always have a good time in Brighton. And how good were SWANS?!

pssstttt, Hey you (dog latin), Friday, 5 April 2013 11:42 (eleven years ago) link

33% transcendent 33% great 33% meh

glad lap steel dude didn't collapse on stage, got a bit worried at one point

Crackle Box, Friday, 5 April 2013 11:50 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, good to see you dog latin! Thought the gig was more involving the longer it went on, but maybe I just needed time to adjust to it. Don't think I managed to recognise any songs, but I swear to god that Gira was singing Garbageman by the Cramps at one point.

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Friday, 5 April 2013 11:55 (eleven years ago) link

Started at the back daydreaming, ended up at the front: eyes closed, lurching from side to side. I’m a catch, ladies.

Chewshabadoo, Friday, 5 April 2013 14:39 (eleven years ago) link

Thinking of going down to the Green Door for the free Club Zygotic noise alldayer for a couple later on if anyone fancies joining me.

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 7 April 2013 15:21 (eleven years ago) link

Bit knacked so staying in, but those things are usually good.

emil.y, Sunday, 7 April 2013 16:16 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, that thing looked fun. Sightings playing tomorrow night, should be another noisy one.

acid in the style of tenpole tudor (NickB), Sunday, 7 April 2013 19:59 (eleven years ago) link

Was quite fun, only caught the last three but a nice range. A guy from Henry Cow improvising, I assumed, to a Richard Attinborough doc; my friend Lorah who does the West Hill music night, and someone else then did a set using self-built light sensitive instruments controlled with hand-held lights; finally the West Hill free jazz cats (not sure of their name) were on. Nicely programmed I thought.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 8 April 2013 09:36 (eleven years ago) link

A guy from Henry Cow improvising

Oooh, I wonder who that was! Tim Hodgkinson probably. Scrawny guy in specs y?
