RIP. Did you see Christmas Holiday when it played, I can't remember.

I don't think I've seen any of her films.

Came up recently on the Justin Bieber thread (re Anne Frank)...Had no idea she was still alive. My dad had a thing for her--bought him a CD once.

Kenneth Appel, the man who proved the four-color theorem using computers: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/29/technology/kenneth-i-appel-mathematician-who-harnessed-computer-power-dies-at-80.html?pagewanted=all

Best part is

Before their revolutionary work was published, Dr. Appel and Dr. Haken enlisted their entire families to check hundreds of pages of calculations, making sure that diagrams of map configurations matched the computer printouts and did not have typos. Andrew Appel said his sister, Laurel, found some 800 mistakes, most of which she could fix herself.

Brozman was a suicide; he hadn't been able to play guitar for quite some time.

Three Word Username, Thursday, 2 May 2013 09:52 (eleven years ago) link

Should have said "play guitar up to his standards"; he had degenerative problems relating to an old car accident, and the rumor is that the deterioration was accelerating.

Three Word Username, Thursday, 2 May 2013 10:01 (eleven years ago) link

I know of his legend but not too much about his work. RIP

Blue Yodel No. 9 Dream (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 3 May 2013 03:30 (eleven years ago) link

(ok, I did see Christmas Holiday!)

Pope Rusty I (Dr Morbius), Friday, 3 May 2013 03:59 (eleven years ago) link

(Really enjoyed that one- both of them were playing against type!)

x-post
Spotify has some Sid Selvidge-- quieter bluesy stuff with his unique voice, and youtube has some, but yep his legendary stuff with Jim Dickinson and others does not appear to be easily accessible

curmudgeon, Friday, 3 May 2013 14:11 (eleven years ago) link

Believe he features prominently in the book It Came From Memphis, by Robert Gordon.

Blue Yodel No. 9 Dream (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 3 May 2013 14:16 (eleven years ago) link

That's where I first heard of him. Author Robert Gordon once brought along great obscure film footage for a book tour and I vaguelly recall he might have had home movie quality Mudboy stuff.

Not famous, but Greg Quill, a Toronto music writer:

http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2013/05/05/toronto_star_entertainment_columnist_greg_quill_dies.html

Don't think I ever met him, but we probably reviewed some of the same shows in the '80s, and Wikipedia says he once edited a magazine I wrote for (unless he did that at the very beginning of the magazine's existence, I think that's probably incorrect). He's the first local music writer I can recall dying, so sobering.

clemenza, Monday, 6 May 2013 21:56 (eleven years ago) link

Oh damn...didn't he write for Music Express? Or edit it or something? Pretty sure he wrote for Graffiti.

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Monday, 6 May 2013 22:02 (eleven years ago) link

I think he did edit Music Express for a while, yes. I'd have to check about Graffiti--I don't remember him in there, but you might be right. I didn't realize he'd made albums until reading the obit.

ailsa, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 21:09 (eleven years ago) link

That's so weird--someone posted about the movie Gandhi yesterday on the Philip French thread, and I went on to say that Attenborough's Seance on a Wet Afternoon was an odd film. Then I remembered that it wasn't his film, he was just in it--Forbes directed. So I never posted.

I like The Stepford Wives a lot; think I voted for it in the horror poll.

have only seen 'seance' & 'the wrong box' but both are classic imo, rip b. forbes

johnny crunch, Thursday, 9 May 2013 14:46 (eleven years ago) link

I remember Seance being quite good, and also this one w/ Malcolm McDowell as a paralyzed soccer player:

ballin' from Maine to Mexico (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 May 2013 14:51 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, forbes also acted in and wrote the screenplay for The League of Gentlemen movie (terrific british crime-comedy drama not to be confused w/...) and under his watch EMI Films produced a number of interesting genre pictures, as well as classics like The Railway Children. Can't think of a more 'hyphenated' brit film person, tbh.
