Best part is
Before their revolutionary work was published, Dr. Appel and Dr. Haken enlisted their entire families to check hundreds of pages of calculations, making sure that diagrams of map configurations matched the computer printouts and did not have typos. Andrew Appel said his sister, Laurel, found some 800 mistakes, most of which she could fix herself.

Should have said "play guitar up to his standards"; he had degenerative problems relating to an old car accident, and the rumor is that the deterioration was accelerating.

That's where I first heard of him. Author Robert Gordon once brought along great obscure film footage for a book tour and I vaguelly recall he might have had home movie quality Mudboy stuff.

Not famous, but Greg Quill, a Toronto music writer:
http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2013/05/05/toronto_star_entertainment_columnist_greg_quill_dies.html
Don't think I ever met him, but we probably reviewed some of the same shows in the '80s, and Wikipedia says he once edited a magazine I wrote for (unless he did that at the very beginning of the magazine's existence, I think that's probably incorrect). He's the first local music writer I can recall dying, so sobering.

I think he did edit Music Express for a while, yes. I'd have to check about Graffiti--I don't remember him in there, but you might be right. I didn't realize he'd made albums until reading the obit.

That's so weird--someone posted about the movie Gandhi yesterday on the Philip French thread, and I went on to say that Attenborough's Seance on a Wet Afternoon was an odd film. Then I remembered that it wasn't his film, he was just in it--Forbes directed. So I never posted.
I like The Stepford Wives a lot; think I voted for it in the horror poll.

yeah, forbes also acted in and wrote the screenplay for The League of Gentlemen movie (terrific british crime-comedy drama not to be confused w/...) and under his watch EMI Films produced a number of interesting genre pictures, as well as classics like The Railway Children. Can't think of a more 'hyphenated' brit film person, tbh.

Huge name in Toronto. (He got the front page of The Toronto Sun today, his home base, rather than the Leafs.) Arch-conservative, which up here is not synonymous with wingnut, though he did try to provoke. I vaguely remember writing a letter once in response to something that irked me, but I'm not sure if it was him.
