I was in the audience for CDUK once. Before the show starts you get hectored for an hour by a guy doing standup, among which is applause practice - actual practice of whooping, clapping enthusiastically and gurning behind Cat Deeley, or Ant & Dec, or whoever the presenter was.
It is bewilderingly exhausting giving it all out, hands above your head, for even thirty seconds - try it, if you're alone. So I got mad respect for those Leeds fans who applaud Gary Speed at length, and indeed for tifosi everywhere.
