oh i don't like lewis at all. i just know he's a notoriously difficult interview so i think the results would be interesting.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 23 May 2013 20:54 (eleven years ago) link

i know maron doesnt do uk comedy but its a shame he is missing out on a bunch of classic era comedians from over here. python, being an easy, worldly example.

god if only someone could finally get Pythons interviewed

ok sure but that is just one name out of like 50 who its a shame maron doesnt know exists

Enh, as good as the Stewart Lee WTF interview was, I don't really want to listen to Maron bluffing his way through interviews with any more UK comedians than he chooses to already. I'd much rather a UK comedian who was as equally incisive and well-connected as Maron started their own podcast to work their way through the history of British comedy. Struggling to think of anyone who might fit the bill, though.

Maron's a huge CCR-head, so I'm partly expecting this:

That's hilarious.

ha ha i've had an ongoing debate with a friend about the MIB ep of WTF, where i side with MIB and think that maron was being a dick and she sides with maron and thinks that MIB was being a dick. that's what happens when two comedians with dick personas get together i guess.

Ha was this friends jw? (not Jon Williams)

I've only seen the first two, but I haven't been in a rush to see the ones since then.

yeah I hate to say it but it feels kinda, idk, desperate?

whatever it is, I'm not feeling it.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 28 May 2013 22:38 (eleven years ago) link

I watched the one about the dead animal under the house and made a mental note to never watch the show again.

I liked Marc more when I'd only see him on Conan occasionally, and when he'd release a new album, and when he was just on the radio and/or in the early days of WTF. I even like WTF now. But I think the tv show was one step too far. I'm starting to feel suffocated by his neuroses and generally lifesucking presence.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Tuesday, 28 May 2013 22:40 (eleven years ago) link

i agree, he's better in an off-the-cuff medium rather than scripted

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 28 May 2013 22:41 (eleven years ago) link

Same one I saw. Thought it was okay, but that was several weeks ago and I haven't made an effort to go back and seek out more, so I suppose that says something.

I liked the two I saw. Didn't see the dead animal one. I like the show. I like the interviews. I like some of his rambling. But I don't like his standup.

I like his standup more than his podcast or his tv show

this guy is a terrible interviewer. strictly amateur hour.

But I think the tv show was one step too far. I'm starting to feel suffocated by his neuroses and generally lifesucking presence.

That presence is what I love about his standup and the podcast. I just don't believe it translates to the television format very well, especially in a Louie/Curb Your Enthusiasm context when reality and fiction are mixed up. I like the stories when they come from him directly, but the TV character is a dick.

Greenberg comes up in the Noah Baumbach interview and I think that's likely a big influence on the show.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 29 May 2013 00:44 (eleven years ago) link

show is p much what I expected, maybe a little better/funnier

¬╡▫ ▫╞⌠ (sic), Wednesday, 29 May 2013 01:25 (eleven years ago) link

idk its sorta disappointingly exactly what i expected, but maybe thats cuz im in too deep w/ the podcast

lol this Pamela Adlon episode is filthy, but also hilarious.

Absolutely, I enjoyed the hell out of it. She's a great interview and he didn't even get a chance to summon up any bitterness or resentment. And she works with Louie C.K.!

What is the opposite of "sold" because that's what you just did to me for his show.

I used to listen to Phil Hendrie a lot, but I haven't ever heard his podcast and hearing him cut loose like he is on WTF is really new to me. Love it.

Tommy Stinson interview pretty great! He seems to roll with Maron pretty well on pretty much any topic. There's nothign particularly revelatory or amazing...I think just the fact that it's Tommy kinda puts the interview over the top :)

so many lols in the GNR portion of the interview. Maron asks him how long he's been with GNR, and Tommy says, 'Since 1998'. And Maron goes, 'Wow! That long?" and he gives the most defeated 'Yeah' you've ever heard, it's priceless.

I loved when maron asked"so you guys made Chinese Democracy, and what other albums?"

like Maron's style in that interview was just hilarious. The only way it could have been better is if he had said 'So, Bob. Is still around? What's he up to these days?"

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 7 June 2013 17:11 (eleven years ago) link

you guys played covers in concert? really?

the ep of his show feat the Gersh and her kid w/a podcast was pretty funny. still not entirely sold on the show, he has a thing or two to learn about line readings.

xp Hahaha vg

That actually happened to a friend of mine. He asked a musician about one of his former collaborators: "So what's Jimmy doing now?" Loooonnnng pause. "He's dead, man."

What recent interviews are worth checking out? I enjoyed the Billy Bragg one.

Old Boy In Network (Michael B), Friday, 7 June 2013 22:20 (eleven years ago) link

Phil Hendrie and Pamela Adlon were both really good/funny.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 7 June 2013 22:24 (eleven years ago) link

Hendrie was great. Huey Lewis one worth a listen too (Maron gets frustrated that Lewis was hanging out with all these SF psychedelic luminaries but is still resolutely a square who loves old R&B)

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 7 June 2013 22:33 (eleven years ago) link

Lewis interview was fascinating. Made me wonder if he's the model for Ned Flanders (beatnik parents with squaresville kid).

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Friday, 7 June 2013 22:58 (eleven years ago) link

Didn't Huey Lewis travel around Europe busking when he left college? He doesnt really strike me a boring square, musical output aside.
