WAIT!!!!! I just remembered there's a karaoke spot in Kenmore (aka 7 min walk from Jillian's)! I SENSE A PLAN.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:36 (twenty years ago) link

We can just make our own damned karaoke, what's stopping us from singing like lunatics?!?!?!?!?! I will not go within 5 feet of DDR though, I'm sorry.

Mary, isn't felicity back by then though? She MUST want to come???

Allyzay, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:07 (twenty years ago) link

Felicity is back NOW!!! Whether she wants to come or not, is a different story. I will begin grilling her.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:11 (twenty years ago) link

and this was rilly amusing ... when everyone says yer city sucks, talk about its great medical centers?

Oh and as JP wrote...we have the best medical centers in the world, leading medical research, and we are improving Boston to beeven greater, every day. I have been around the world, and nothing ever compares, to coming home to Boston. And it probably never will.

I hate Boston. I've got a sticker on my record player that says "Keep Boston Out of Providence." My friend Ren had them printed up a while back--kids from Boston who go to shows in Providence are assholes.

Can anyone recommend some cheap, nice hotels in Boston, preferably near the Orpheum Theater and/or the Chinatown bus drop-off/Greyhound depot?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 07:54 (nineteen years ago) link

As far as I know the entire concept of a nice cheap Boston hotel is an oxymoron. In general, if you want to go below $100 you have to stay a good 15 miles outside of the city.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:29 (nineteen years ago) link

morrissey stays at the ritz

buckminster hotel is your best bet, maybe? dan is right, even the super8 in watertown is $110.

Buckminster Hotel

whoops, the copy and paste was only supposed to start at 645 Beacon Street

oh yeah, that area can be a mess if the red sox are playing

kephm, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:35 (nineteen years ago) link

You can search a whole bunch of the online sites if you use Sidestep (http://www.sidestep.com) but really, within the area you specified you're going to be lucky to find anything less that $170. (The Buckminster is probably your best bet but it's over in the Fenway area, which isn't really far from Beacon Hill/Chinatown/The Financial District but is far enough that walking would be a pain and a cab ride would be irritating, plus what kephm said about Red Sox fans.)

You can also try this link: http://www.accomline.com/hotels.reservations/Boston.htm

They're listing a room at the Park Plaza for $131 which is kind of unbelievable to me.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:39 (nineteen years ago) link

(haha I clicked through on their Park Plaza link and it's a classic bait-and-switch; "Oh, did we say $131? We really meant $229.")

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:41 (nineteen years ago) link

Thank you, Bostonians! Would staying at a freaky student club in Cambridge be weird?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:46 (nineteen years ago) link

perhaps, they might drag you down to the goth club or run tests on you

kephm, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Depends on the club, really (is it a Harvard or MIT thing, or a Boston school with some Cambridge real estate?)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:49 (nineteen years ago) link

I can't check my Lonely Planet because I left it at home, but they were like some converted women's club and one other club-type thing, neither specifically Harvard/MIT related I don't think.

But, I just called Buckminster Filler and they have a room for me for $89, thankfully. What is fun to do around the BF, besides catching a cab to the Ritz?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 14:56 (nineteen years ago) link

You are a block away from Landsdowne St, which is one of the main club areas in town and also where Fenway Park is. At the far end of Landsdowne St is a Jillian's with a surprisingly cheap bowling alley on the third floor. If you go down Landsdowne and turn right instead of left when you get to the end and follow that street as it curves around to the left, you'll end up on Boylston just outside of a gay dance club and a restaurant that does salsa dancing. If you go up Brookline Ave you'll hit the Fenway movie theatre (and its attendant mall in case you need to pick up random stuff) and a whole bunch of restaurants, including a reasonably-priced rib place called something like Southwest Coyote. There's also a beer pub at the corner of Landsdowne and Brookline that is usually MOBBED with Sox fans. If you head down Beacon you'll hit The Elephant Walk (moderately pricey French-Cambodian) and Sol Azteca (Mexican). If you go down Commonwealth away from the city you'll hit Boston University; if you go towards town you'll hit Mass Ave and be a block down from Newbury Street and the Virgin Megastore, Newbury Comics, JP Licks, and tons and tons of excellent windowshopping.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:03 (nineteen years ago) link

(There are a ton of restaurants on Newbury St and on Boylston St, BTW, plus you can take the green line from Kenmore to Arlington to get to The Ritz.)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:04 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm going to be in Boston (well, Cambridge) for a week or so at the end of October. I'm starting to get really excited about it; having been away for two years, and just being on a flying visit, will make me see all the good things and avoid the boredom that set in when I spent three months there. I hope.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Stay at Chateau Perry

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:07 (nineteen years ago) link

walk over to mass ave and walk across the bridge to cambridge. it's a lovely stroll, esp. at night.

xpost

kephm, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:10 (nineteen years ago) link

(I would offer but I would have to check with my wife first and right now she is in full-bore stress mode over an upcoming recital and I think avoiding adding to that stress by asking if someone she doesn't know at all can stay with us at some unspecified time in the future might be the move I should be making here. Also we don't live near the area you're interested in.)

(xpost kephm OTM: the Cambridge side of the Charles has much better scenery; it's much nicer to look at the Boston skyline than it is to look at MIT.)

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks again, this is excellent info. The Buckminster seems like it's in a great location.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:28 (nineteen years ago) link

ITs in a great location if you can stand a zillion BU students bumping into you.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:50 (nineteen years ago) link

The BU/Fenway/Landsdowne convergence can tend towards the annoying but otherwise it is a good location.

Chris, what's the name of that bar we went to after Jillian's? The Cask and Flagon?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 15:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Yup the Cask, thankfully the Sox aren't home this weekend so it should be a somewhat civilized place. Granted the DJ had no clue who Erik B was.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Landsdowne St is awful. I learned to hate BU students during my year in Boston.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:15 (nineteen years ago) link

i think mary has the smarts to stay away from landsdowne.

kephm, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 16:38 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't have any Boston-related smarts! My goals are to make it to the Museum of Fine Arts and the Harvard campus. What is the fanciest shmanciest department store? That is probably my best bet for a Moz sighting.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:08 (nineteen years ago) link

There's a Nieman-Marcus at Copley Place and a Saks in Prudential Centre (both shopping areas are conveniently connected by a skyway).

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:12 (nineteen years ago) link

well i hope you know enough to stay away from sports bars. (landsdowne street UGH)

MOFA is easy to get to. just watch it on the orange line, tough neighborhoods just one stop over. are you going to see the DECO show ?

oh and if you pull into Greyhound/trainn Depot and its dark outside , take a cab to the hotel.

xpost

Neiumun Marcus (sp) in Copley Square maybe? you like an extra 20%

kephm (kephm), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:17 (nineteen years ago) link

you like an extra 20%

WTF, i can type, honest

kephm (kephm), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:20 (nineteen years ago) link

I'll arrive at Greyhound during the day, but will leave at night, after the concert. Is it really that dangerous? I suppose I could take a cab from the Orpheum?
