like Maron's style in that interview was just hilarious. The only way it could have been better is if he had said 'So, Bob. Is still around? What's he up to these days?"

the ep of his show feat the Gersh and her kid w/a podcast was pretty funny. still not entirely sold on the show, he has a thing or two to learn about line readings.

Bathory Tub Blues (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 7 June 2013 19:01 (eleven years ago) link

xp Hahaha vg

That actually happened to a friend of mine. He asked a musician about one of his former collaborators: "So what's Jimmy doing now?" Loooonnnng pause. "He's dead, man."

When Tommy talks about Axl, it's like he's talking about his boss. There's no love for that guy.

What recent interviews are worth checking out? I enjoyed the Billy Bragg one.

Old Boy In Network (Michael B), Friday, 7 June 2013 22:20 (eleven years ago) link

Phil Hendrie and Pamela Adlon were both really good/funny.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 7 June 2013 22:24 (eleven years ago) link

Hendrie was great. Huey Lewis one worth a listen too (Maron gets frustrated that Lewis was hanging out with all these SF psychedelic luminaries but is still resolutely a square who loves old R&B)

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 7 June 2013 22:33 (eleven years ago) link

Lewis interview was fascinating. Made me wonder if he's the model for Ned Flanders (beatnik parents with squaresville kid).

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Friday, 7 June 2013 22:58 (eleven years ago) link

Didn't Huey Lewis travel around Europe busking when he left college? He doesnt really strike me a boring square, musical output aside.

Old Boy In Network (Michael B), Friday, 7 June 2013 23:06 (eleven years ago) link

yeah turns out the shit he was into is way cooler than the grateful dead etc

The Phil Hendrie one was def cool

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 8 June 2013 00:15 (eleven years ago) link

that one made me want to check out Hendrie's stuff, something that doesn't happen often with other guests

though i guess if I based my consumption off of wtf episodes I'd be watching Frances Ha and the fake season of Community and listening to John Fogerty jam with My Morning Jacket

the tv show was getting tolerable until this danny trejo ep

no clue who kevin christy is but that 1 was my fav recent ep of the podcast

johnny crunch, Saturday, 8 June 2013 02:55 (eleven years ago) link

the Marshall Crenshaw/ Thomas Dolby episode was a little cringe inducing as Maron has this obsession with success--really kind of ruined the Tommy Stinson interview for me too--and he knew almost nothing about either guest. But Dolby was awesome. I loved when he talked about Prefab Sprout as a British Steely Dan and you could feel Maron working hard to restrain himself from being a dick about it.

mimicking regular benevloent (sic) users' names (President Keyes), Saturday, 15 June 2013 01:04 (eleven years ago) link

Ooh I wasn't going to listen, but now that Prefab Sprout is on the table, I'm there. Maron and Scharpling's Dan-o-phobia is a serious character failing!

Iago Galdston, Saturday, 15 June 2013 01:26 (eleven years ago) link

ah, I didn't know Scharpling was also a Dan-o-phobe. I knew there was something off about that man.

mimicking regular benevloent (sic) users' names (President Keyes), Saturday, 15 June 2013 01:32 (eleven years ago) link

that last episode of the tv show was fucking awful....i'm sorry, until further notice, this show sucks

Iago Galdston, Saturday, 15 June 2013 16:27 (eleven years ago) link

The Iggy episode was pretty good.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 24 June 2013 12:17 (eleven years ago) link

when he was teasing last week that he had a guest he'd been trying to get forever I thought it would be Seinfeld or something but of course it was a musician.

I figure there have to be several levels of urgency that determine when these interviews get dropped

1. There are the people doing publicity for a time sensitive property whose publicists ask for a specific time for the interview to go up
2. There are the "get" interviews with people Maron is excited about. These go the front of the queue so that Hardwick doesn't get them first
3. All the other people who can get slotted in whenever

mimicking regular benevloent (sic) users' names (President Keyes), Monday, 24 June 2013 17:53 (eleven years ago) link

xp lol I thought that was a slam.

i downloaded the kristen schall ep bc i like her a lot but haven't listened to it yet, is it an ok one?

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 24 June 2013 18:27 (eleven years ago) link

Made it five minutes into the Rogen/Goldberg one before I couldn't take Rogen's laugh any longer.

Iggy Pop ep is good, I'd love to hear WTF w/ Henry Rollins.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 24 June 2013 19:47 (eleven years ago) link

oh hey that exists and I think I've listened to it

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 24 June 2013 19:49 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, the Rollins one was a couple years back, but it was pretty enjoyable iirc.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 24 June 2013 19:50 (eleven years ago) link

The Kristen Schaal one was pretty light and fluffy, but it came to light that she was a ska kid at one point in time and it rubbed some of her shine off.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 24 June 2013 19:51 (eleven years ago) link

I couldn't take Rogen's laugh any longer.

about a decade back I was in a band with a guy who laughed just like rogen. I quit that band.

MM: I just interviewed Thom Yorke.

WCP: Wow. You haven’t posted that one yet, have you?

MM: No. They’re all a little different. Some are more aware than others. I’ve got a Nick Cave coming up.

WCP: I had an interview scheduled with him once but he cancelled and I never got to do it.

MM: He’s not easy. He’s difficult.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 27 June 2013 17:42 (eleven years ago) link

When I had John Cale on, that was fuckin’ impossible, dude! The guy’s been around for 40 years or longer. I’m not that familiar with his solo stuff. I don’t have Paris 1919. I took the interview because I could, and because I wanted to talk about the fuckin’ Velvet Underground and producing The Stooges.

So I’m listening to all this stuff, trying to cram it in. I talked to him for like an hour and 15 minutes, and was very forthcoming about The Velvet Underground, about production, about noise music. Then he asks, “Are we going to talk about the new album?” And I’m like, “No, I didn’t get it, dude. They didn’t sent it to me. I haven’t heard it.” I just had to be honest. And he looked at me like, You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. I didn’t know what to do. So I seized that moment and asked him, “Well, what did you do differently this record?” It was the right question to ask. It was better because I was honest. He had to explain something to me about his process. So it worked out.

jesus
