I've merrily cruised through life FB-free up until a couple of weeks ago, when I got had to get access to the company's FB account. It is thee worst. What a hideous monstrosity. Why people actively go to FB for "fun" or "pleasure"... http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/4c/Itisamystery.gif

Logged in as a business the search bar is ~gone~. FB becomes unsearchable. Whyyy, FB, whyyy? Do you actually think "a company" is an abstract entity and wouldn't want to search? You don't realize there's a human being using it for a company? Mind = blown.

I have to check on it on the go, on my ipad. Turns out you have to use this spiffy creation called PAGES. O RLY? The FB app points you to PAGES, the PAGES app points you to the FB app. And for what? Nations have started wars about less iirc.

Whatever floats yer boat, live and let live etc, not here to diss FB users. It is just literally such an unusable beast, and so so fucking ugly.

uh just got in my timeline a "sponsored post" from "american conservatives of color" with a very graphic photograph of two dead men in a car. just popping up in the middle of my feed with pics of my friends' kids.

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 26 July 2013 17:19 (eleven years ago) link

that's disgusting
those sponsored posts are the worst because you can't mark them "offensive" -- it's only "i don't want to see this" or sthg like that

My sponsored posts are always some freemium game.

Jeff, Friday, 26 July 2013 19:20 (eleven years ago) link

i reported it to facebook for "graphic violence." just got a note back basically saying "sorry, it doesn't violate our standards, we're not taking it down." so i reported it again for "hate speech" because the subtext of the post is racist (it's some bs about the media not reporting black-on-black violence, only white-on-black violence), don't think it will help.

i don't know if this link will work and you should probably not click on it, but if you really want to see the offensive post here it is. WARNING VERY GRAPHIC PHOTOGRAPH https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=401795433274061&set=a.332228270230778.77575.332179256902346&type=1

I hate to be that guy who runs on to every thread proclaiming how he hasn't seen a pop-up in ten years because he's got some sort of fancy software running, but...

I downloaded Social Fixer to use with Facebook, and aside from all the neat tricks like hiding posts that you've already read, separating YouTube and Instragram links, and goofy shit like anonymizing the page for lol screencaps, it also blocks all promotional content like that. Check it out.

Facebook is pernicious for stuff like this because a) ppl can click to join groups and share photos from group bcoz they happen to like one photo and sometimes these groups are actual neo-nazis and b) discussions of controversial matters always have a get-out clause provided by the social/self-expression nature of the site, i.e. 'it's just my opinion'

cardamon, Friday, 26 July 2013 23:24 (eleven years ago) link

I'll bet that if you cross-posted this with a suitable "Facebook takes crypto-racist ads!" to Reddit and Gawker you might get some traction.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 26 July 2013 23:36 (eleven years ago) link

'it's just my opinion' is a real world get-out clause too (as per the innumerable people i've heard spouting utterly offensive shit followed by 'hey don't get angry it's just what i think') xp

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 26 July 2013 23:38 (eleven years ago) link

i.e. clearly it's particular to facebook but i don't think facebook nurtures that behaviour specifically

two weeks pass...

If my wife posts some innocuous little gesture of affection on my wall like "I love you so much" and I comment back "I love you too, honey", odds are that somewhere between 12 hours to 2 days later, my father-in-law will pop up and comment "I also love my wife" or "...AND you're such a good father to my grandchildren!" or something like that. BLLLLLLLECH.

Am I the only one who finds it annoying that FB has shifted from the alphabetical order listing of friends on the event invite window to some sort of other weird order?

Also there's no longer an option to send a group message to invitees who haven't responded.

We're removing an old Facebook setting called "Who can look up your Timeline by name." We'd like to give you more info about this change.
What's changing: We're removing an old search setting called "Who can look up your Timeline by name"—but this won't change who can see what you've shared on Facebook.
What did this setting do?
"Who can look up your Timeline by name" controlled who could find your Timeline by typing your name in search.
What will happen when the setting is removed?
Anyone will be able to look up your Timeline by your name — but if they go to your Timeline, they'll only see what they already have permission to see. Removing this setting doesn't change who can see your photos, status updates or other things you've shared.
Why is Facebook removing this setting?
When we created this setting, the only way to find you on Facebook was to search for your specific name. Now, people can come across your Timeline in other ways: for example if a friend tags you in a photo, which links to your Timeline, or if people search for phrases like "People who like The Beatles," or "People who live in Seattle," in Graph Search.
Today, the best way to manage who sees your stuff is to use your Privacy Shortcuts (just click the lock icon at the top of every page of the Facebook website), and to choose who to share with when you post new photos and updates.
What's next?
Here are some things you can do to review your privacy choices:
If you want to quickly limit the audience of things you've shared in the past to Friends, visit your privacy settings.
Each time you share a photo, link or status update, you can set the privacy for that specific post.
Check out what you've shared in the past—and who can see that info—by going to your activity log. To get to your activity log, click the lock icon at the top of any page to open your privacy shortcuts.
If you don't want any more reminders and you're ready for Facebook to remove the setting now, you can click Okay, I Understand and we'll stop showing this info.
Thanks for taking the time to read this message and for being part of Facebook.

I had to read that three times before I realized it's making your profile more accessible rather than the opposite.

i really like how ppl cant look me up by name

ᶓ͠סּᴥ͠סּᶔ ᶓͼ᷆ₓͼ᷇ᶔ (gr8080), Monday, 4 November 2013 22:01 (ten years ago) link

I had that setting checked too.

Not that I didn't think it made it impossible for people to find me, but just so in that initial search, perhaps they'd think "well, guess he's not on Facebook."

pplains, Monday, 4 November 2013 22:13 (ten years ago) link

otm.

facebook is being all "quit whining, they'll find you anyway"

ᶓ͠סּᴥ͠סּᶔ ᶓͼ᷆ₓͼ᷇ᶔ (gr8080), Monday, 4 November 2013 23:17 (ten years ago) link

I have said this before, so it shows you how serious I am about it, but Facebook is going downhill.

Between the bitstrips and the e-notes and the political shit, and the weird order and non-order that FB algorithms arrange everything for me, it's getting to be more and more a waste of time.

Here's what I look for in Facebook:
• pictures of my friends doing cool shit.
• funny twitter like posts that come across as in-jokes.
• maybe one out of 11 stories someone posts is really interesting. More than likely, it's from an ILXor and I've already seen it here.

And I'd say those three type of posts make up 8 percent of my feed right now.

But I still go there and I still post to my profile and it's one of the four or five sites I cycle through all day long. Which goes back to my original statement, gosh this Facebook thing sucks so much, I'm liable to just sit down and pretend like I'm going to quit one of these days.

pplains, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 01:08 (ten years ago) link

i've sort of been noticing the same thing but i haven't been sure if it's facebook getting worse or all my facebook friends getting older and more spread out and lonely or me just becoming more of a curmudgeon because i spend all day on ilx
