think less in terms of the specs and more in terms of the form factor

otm. For something that you're going to touch, move, and use every day, it should be something you enjoy touching, moving, and using.

The Verge put out their review of the feature-bumped (and $100 price-dropped) 13" MacBook Airs

http://www.theverge.com/2013/6/17/4436332/macbook-air-review-13-inch-2013

We’ve been recommending the MacBook Air for three years straight now, so this is pretty simple: if you’re a normal person shopping for a laptop, you should buy a MacBook Air.

otm

"a normal person" ;_;

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Monday, 17 June 2013 20:09 (ten years ago) link

i think it really comes down to whether you prefer the bigger screen of the 15" as opposed to a 13" mbp or mba and whether you'd be willing to put up with the extra 1-2 pounds of weight that entails

乒乓, Monday, 17 June 2013 20:12 (ten years ago) link

I think I'm totally cool with the 13" tbh, after looking them over in the store. At any rate, I'm convinced now that I don't need quad-core vs. dual-core, so the 13" is probably the way to go.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Monday, 17 June 2013 20:28 (ten years ago) link

is it retina? that would be a big reason to go for the pro over the air

乒乓, Monday, 17 June 2013 20:44 (ten years ago) link

Yes. I wanted retina more for the SSD though.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Monday, 17 June 2013 21:10 (ten years ago) link

I have a 15" MBP at work and it's bloody massive compared to the 11". Weighs about as much as a PowerBook 170.

Goes like stink, mind. Think the Retina one is lighter, too.

i hope by the time i'm ready to by a new laptop (knock on wood not for a long time), that macbook airs will be video-capable

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Monday, 17 June 2013 23:00 (ten years ago) link

dude... they can already display video. FYI.

乒乓, Monday, 17 June 2013 23:02 (ten years ago) link

even cartoons?

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Monday, 17 June 2013 23:03 (ten years ago) link

haven't checked mine yet. Will let you know

乒乓, Monday, 17 June 2013 23:05 (ten years ago) link

*waits*

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Monday, 17 June 2013 23:25 (ten years ago) link

I'm really more of a MBP level cartoon watcher than a MBA one.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Monday, 17 June 2013 23:26 (ten years ago) link

I've had an MBA for a few years now. It's great. If we're going to nitpick :

- The keyboard feels better on the MBP somehow - having the weight of the machine under the keys makes a slight difference.

- No way of swapping out the hard drive for more storage. You'll be tied to 128 for as long as you own the machine.

Yeah, I made up my mind on this much: I'm not accepting anything less than 512 GB.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 13:12 (ten years ago) link

Well, actually I think I've made up my mind on a lot of other things by now tbh.

Macsales do an upgrade kit to take it up to 480GB, not cheap though

yeah the mba's lack of storage can be a pain, otoh what do you really need it for? i put all my mp3s into itunes match and keep my aperture library on an external, works fine

max, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 13:40 (ten years ago) link

also lack of ethernet port can be annoying

max, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 13:42 (ten years ago) link

I take a lot of raw photos.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 13:43 (ten years ago) link

so do i, but i never need to deal w/ them in a situation where im not at my desk and able to plug in the hard drive

max, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 13:59 (ten years ago) link

one of these guys http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B005EWTL7C/

max, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 14:01 (ten years ago) link

I have the ethernet dongle it's annoying to have to remember it but nbd.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 14:03 (ten years ago) link

yeah i havent been in a situation where ive absolutely needed to use the ethernet dongle either

max, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 14:03 (ten years ago) link

I mainly use it at work the wireless isn't too hot.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 14:24 (ten years ago) link

this is a huge thing for me too, even just my itunes library

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 14:42 (ten years ago) link

i dont trust externals either

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 14:43 (ten years ago) link

i get by fine w/ 256 and all my music on it, have about 40 gigs perpetually open

乒乓, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 14:43 (ten years ago) link

It's not that I don't trust externals. They're just a chore.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 15:15 (ten years ago) link

i've been dongleless when it's mattered. i have several now. : (

my hdd use varies, but it was basically impossible until i signed up to itunes match, which i still don't really like.

caek, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 16:23 (ten years ago) link

all worth it though for the weight imo

caek, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 16:24 (ten years ago) link

how is "aapl" one point on a line? wouldn't the whole line be appl?

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 17:36 (ten years ago) link

you dont trust externals, sheesh

max, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 17:45 (ten years ago) link

external hard drives are literally the same as internal hard drives, but external. You can convince yourself of this by buying a regular hard drive and slapping it in an enclosure.

the REAL Dr Morbius (silby), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 18:15 (ten years ago) link

I never said I was being rational.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 18:18 (ten years ago) link

I am, after all, buying an Apple product.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 18:18 (ten years ago) link

i have had so many external hard drives die on me, they are horrible

we're up all night to get (s1ocki), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 18:18 (ten years ago) link

spinning disk hard drives in general are horrible, tho.

the REAL Dr Morbius (silby), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 18:19 (ten years ago) link

externals are fine. get one with a warranty and clone it/back it up to the cloud.

max, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 18:26 (ten years ago) link

i dont know why im selling the mba so hard, ITS YOUR FUNERAL

max, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 18:26 (ten years ago) link

i swapped out my optical drive for a spinny hard drive, feels great but it also feels like it might die on me at any moment

乒乓, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 18:27 (ten years ago) link

do you trust checkboxes or flush headphone jack

kenjataimu (cozen), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 18:29 (ten years ago) link

I'm pretty happy with iTunes match other than it has screwed up the artist list on the iPhone.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Tuesday, 18 June 2013 18:37 (ten years ago) link

my biggest ITM complaint is that it doesnt play well w/ my ISP for some reason and gets stuck in an endless upload loop. otherwise works more or less entirely as advertised

max, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 18:39 (ten years ago) link

my theory based on nothing but my guessing is that one of the things that kills external hard-drives is shittier electronics/power supply than whats in your computer. I've had external drives "die" that I've opened up, pulled the drive out of the enclosure and stuck it in my mac and gotten a few years out of it.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 18:47 (ten years ago) link

yeah it could be the usb interface in the enclosure itself

乒乓, Tuesday, 18 June 2013 18:51 (ten years ago) link

i think this is true, the USB interfaces die before the drive itself does. which makes it the more annoying when they glue the case shut or some such idiocy
