I'm really more of a MBP level cartoon watcher than a MBA one.

I've had an MBA for a few years now. It's great. If we're going to nitpick :

- The keyboard feels better on the MBP somehow - having the weight of the machine under the keys makes a slight difference.

- No way of swapping out the hard drive for more storage. You'll be tied to 128 for as long as you own the machine.

Yeah, I made up my mind on this much: I'm not accepting anything less than 512 GB.

Well, actually I think I've made up my mind on a lot of other things by now tbh.

yeah the mba's lack of storage can be a pain, otoh what do you really need it for? i put all my mp3s into itunes match and keep my aperture library on an external, works fine

also lack of ethernet port can be annoying

I take a lot of raw photos.

so do i, but i never need to deal w/ them in a situation where im not at my desk and able to plug in the hard drive

I mainly use it at work the wireless isn't too hot.

this is a huge thing for me too, even just my itunes library

i dont trust externals either

i get by fine w/ 256 and all my music on it, have about 40 gigs perpetually open

my hdd use varies, but it was basically impossible until i signed up to itunes match, which i still don't really like.

external hard drives are literally the same as internal hard drives, but external. You can convince yourself of this by buying a regular hard drive and slapping it in an enclosure.

i have had so many external hard drives die on me, they are horrible

spinning disk hard drives in general are horrible, tho.

externals are fine. get one with a warranty and clone it/back it up to the cloud.

I'm pretty happy with iTunes match other than it has screwed up the artist list on the iPhone.

my biggest ITM complaint is that it doesnt play well w/ my ISP for some reason and gets stuck in an endless upload loop. otherwise works more or less entirely as advertised

my theory based on nothing but my guessing is that one of the things that kills external hard-drives is shittier electronics/power supply than whats in your computer. I've had external drives "die" that I've opened up, pulled the drive out of the enclosure and stuck it in my mac and gotten a few years out of it.

yeah it could be the usb interface in the enclosure itself

i think this is true, the USB interfaces die before the drive itself does. which makes it the more annoying when they glue the case shut or some such idiocy

i did that multiple times. kinda impossible to back it up to the cloud when it's 3TB tho :(

i have been buying externals since they cost $500 for 60GB and were huge and had loud spinning fans. this has been a long heartbreak

I think the main problem with external drives is that until USB3/Thunderbolt you were stuck with USB 1 or 2 which suuuuucked or you had a nice firewire drive that was less supported with each hardware revision
